I'm Thinking Of You - Islanders at Leafs

Who:Toronto Maple Leafs v. New York Islanders

What: Game 49 of the regular season.

When: 7:00 PM

Where: Nassau Colliseum, Sportsnet-Ontario, and AM640

After shutting out the Islanders at home, the Leafs will look to take another two points from the conference's second worst team. With a win tonight, and a loss for the Devils (v. Buffalo) and the Caps (v. Boston), the Leafs could find themselves in 7th place tomorrow morning.

Star-divide

I think this will be an excellent test of Ron WIlson's coaching, as despite maintaining that he "doesn't match lines," Wilson put a lot of effort into making sure that Kulemin, Grabovski, Crabb, Phaneuf, and Schenn were out against John Tavares' line. Ron won't have the benefit of last change this time, so it'll be much tougher to get the matchups he wants.

There was no morning skate today, but I wouldn't be surprised if Wilson mixed up the lines to avoid accidentally getting the Tavares line against the defensively poor Lupul-Bozak-Kessel line. Despite "anonymous sources" to the contrary, Ron Wilson said following last night's game that Gustavsson is "probable" to get the start in net. Montoya is expected to start in net for the Islanders, but it's also unconfirmed. Please remember to keep your spin and unreadable homerism to a maximum in the comments.

Go Leafs Go!

It’s even noticeable for guys like me who don’t pay too much attention. It’s too bad that we don’t have a defensive forward like a Manny Malhotra to put out there but Grabbo/Kulie/Crabb can hold their own at least

We’ve been waiting all year for the roof to cave in on the Sens, still hasn’t happened yet. I’ve got my fingers crossed that they will finish the year 9th (the Habs can finish 10th) and end up with a crappy draft pick. But until then, all this stuff about how they’re “supposed to suck” if it wasn’t for x,y,z going their way or how unsustainable their goal differential is, well it just sounds like sour grapes.

Deserved or not, they’re still 7 points up on us.

Exactly. We almost made the playoffs last year based on stellar goaltending from Reimer. Did the Leafs play better than their roster indicated they should’ve? Probably. If we had made the playoffs would we have taken it? Absolutely.

Tell that to Colorado: from the playoffs to the basement. The underlying numbers suggesting that they couldn’t count on a similar performance next year would’ve meant that selling high on overperforming players at the deadline could’ve been a smart move. Ignoring those numbers is what leads people to keep players like Spezza and Michalek around, thinking they can skirt a real rebuild.

And if the Sens do fuck themselves because of this (and it looks like they will) then sure they’ll be open to that criticism. But right now, it just looks like we’re trying real hard to make ourselves feel better that our rivals are ahead of us in the standings.
