Yeah, You Fix That Penalty Kill

TORONTO, CANADA - DECEMBER 19: Philippe Dupuis #11 of the Toronto Maple Leafs gets away from Davis Drewiske #44 of the Los Angeles Kings during NHL action at The Air Canada Centre December 19, 2011 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. (Photo by Abelimages/Getty Images)

Depending on what you decide to call it, there was a heated "debate" or "discussion" yesterday about just where defenders should be standing while killing a penalty. It's good that the Leafs are spending some time sorting out their problems on the PK, but as James Mirtle points out, this is something that probably should have been sorted out earlier.

"We’re doing some things on blocking shots and being in the proper lane," Wilson explained. "[We’re] discussing some of the techniques because at times we’re screening the goalie, we’re not blocking the shot. We’ve got to find a way to block the shot or get out of the way."

Thank god we’re rid of Dupuis. Hopefully it means Brownie will be back soon. I think shaving off the moustache really weakened him, hence the injury, so I hope he grows one back.

From mirtle:

“At one point after practice, veteran defenceman Mike Komisarek could be heard just outside of the dressing room candidly advising one teammate to get on the same page rather than go his own way.”

What the eff? I suppose disagreement among coworkers is fairly common, but it’s unsettling to think that the PKers aren’t all on the same page. Like, there are guys out there who just flat out aren’t implementing the plan and are doing their own thing. Although it would explain a lot!

Personally, i think the strategy sucks because they’re too passive. It’s not just poorly executed, it’s entirely too dependent on allowing unimpeded shots even at the best of times.

As SkinnyFish says below, I think it’s the opposite problem – getting in the way of too many shots. Neither of the PK goals in the last game happen if the defender just gets out of the way, takes a forward, and lets Reimer see the puck.

yup, it seems like instead of choosing between blocking a shot and letting Reimer see the puck, we choose “neither” and either deflect it in, or try to block while simultaneously screening him.

Aggressive if you’re the closest man to the puck, but often times the other 3 guys start puck watching and routinely lose guys in front of the net.

as am I. I think at the very least he’s a good veteran presence….he’s seen a lot more than the young guys on our team, and I think he can provide some leadership, especially in these kinds of situation (PK)

by Goosemonster on Jan 3, 2012 9:36 AM EST up reply actions

At worst, Komisarek at least buys into the coach’s system, giving it the best possible chance of succeeding (irrespective of his own deficiencies of a player). You have to imagine that Wilson likes having him around too, since Komisarek is actively helping keep Wilson from losing the room.

This could be confirmation bias since he’s been hurt and therefore appearing better than he was since he hasn’t sucked lately, but did he not start poorly and then pick up his play right before he got hurt?

I seem to recall the general tone being “Komi wasn’t the worst Dman out there last night” after a string of games right before he went down…

I can’t show the stats to justify it, but earlier this season I remember him actually earning a spot in the top 4, as opposed to being our 6/7 Dman. But regardless, we need a good shutdown defender at the trade deadline to help us out.

by Goosemonster on Jan 3, 2012 10:05 AM EST up reply actions

I think the difference is that Komisarek isn’t being outplayed by Schenn this year. Defensively, our right side looks like “Phaneuf” and then “oh god someone play well tonight.”

Komisarek’s Fenwick numbers weren’t bad in the stretch of maybe 6-8 games before he went down, I believe, but in general I still think he’s prone to too many mistakes. He’s probably a better option on the PK than Gardiner, though.

It is just a stupid strategy, for it to work you need 4 Tim Brents and 4 Mike Browns for when the 4 Tim Brents are all injured from blocking shots. It is an awful strategy that is clearly starting to frustrate the players. I can’t say that I blame them.

by GettinGiggy on Jan 3, 2012 10:15 AM EST up reply actions

Wilson’s Way Scenario A: Shot taken, Phaneuf blocks it, hooray.
WWSB: Shot taken, Phaneuf doesn’t block it, rebound, guy behind him is alone in the front for the easy rebound tap in.
WWSC: Shot taken, Phaneuf and other guy screen goalie, goal.
WWSD: Shot taken, Phaneuf fails to block shot, guy behind him tip it for a goal.

Phaneuf’s Way Scenario A: Shot taken, Phaneuf takes self and man out of line of shot, goalie was routine save on a point shot.
PWSB: Shot taken, Phaneuf takes self and man out of line of shot, rebound, goalie has time to cover as the man in front is tied up and out of the way.
PWSC&D: If Phaneuf can’t get his man out of the way, then it could go just like WWSC&D.

So basically Phaneuf’s way is the superior alternative in 50% of the possible scenarios for a point shot and then the same for the other half. So yeah TIE UP YOUR MAN IN FRONT AND DON’T SCREEN THE GOALIE YOU IDIOTS.

one possibility of Phaneuf’s way is for the D-man to take a penalty by taking down the forward (given how massive our defencemen are and how easy some players will go down). Not a likely one, but a possibility.

It’s about timing really, you’ve gotta engage the forward as the shot is about to come. Tie up his stick and move him enough that the goalie can see the puck being shot. It doesn’t have to be a penalty. 6’3" Phaneuf, 6’4" Komi, 6’2" Schenn, 6’5" Franson, 6’5" Aulie should be able to lean on a guy enough to get the job done.

Exactly, it’s a catch 22…

The PK sucks because the PKers do dumb things, not because the leafs take dumb penalties (although the result is the same).

Well,

At ES, his Corsi On and Corsi Rel numbers look awful, and his Ozone% is 49%, so that’s not making up for much. That said, his Corsi Rel QoC is the best on our team. He has a PDO of 895, which is pretty amazing, to be honest, but I suppose it’s just a small sample size thing.

At 5v4, he’s got one of the higher Corsi Rel ratings on the team. Yeah, I’d say he probably adds something to the PK.

by JP Nikota on Jan 3, 2012 12:44 PM EST up reply actions

Yup, so I would want him back for PK even if he doesn’t really add anything over whoever he is replacing at ES. That PDO is ridiculous, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one that low.

by TheCeej on Jan 3, 2012 12:48 PM EST up reply actions

The Leafs' PK

It’s entirely possible this has already been said (I’m late weighing in today) but it seems to me that the Leafs’ PK has swung the pendulum too far in the opposite direction.

Last year, they were mind-numbingly passive and let teams set up in the offensive zone at their leisure. This year, it seems to me that they spend too much time chasing the puck and that’s what really seems to be opening up these absurd passing lanes that we see game in and game out. Purely observational but that’s my take, anyway.

http://bluechipprospects.blogspot.com

by Curt S on Jan 3, 2012 12:47 PM EST reply actions

Actually, I would argue that they don’t spend enough time chasing the puck, rather they seem shell-shocked and numb when the opposing team’s unit begins to rotate in position. I think the passing lanes are a result of the lack of active sticks. This however, has looked to be improved somewhat lately.

by gettingcozywithsarkozy on Jan 3, 2012 12:51 PM EST up reply actions

we chase the puck for about 20 seconds, then when we’re tired we sit back passively and let them pass around us. If I’ve seen it once in December, I’ve seen it a dozen times. We’re not clearing the puck when we get the chance, and its tiring our PK guys and killing our PK numbers.

by Goosemonster on Jan 3, 2012 12:53 PM EST up reply actions

Really? It seems like every game I watch, the forwards are always playing too high on the points and shift too far to the boards when the puck is on the outside.

by gettingcozywithsarkozy on Jan 3, 2012 1:30 PM EST up reply actions

If your forwards don’t backcheck hard, your team is giving up a great scoring chance. However, maybe 10% of the time the attacking team turns the puck over and your forward gets a breakway or odd-man rush. Sure, it worked out, but you wouldn’t call it a good idea.

I’ve been saying for years that Don Cherry has a lot of insightful points that he’s absolutely terrible at articulating. He’s a tremendous success as a broadcaster in that he draws ratings, but he’s an abject failure as a communicator in that he not only fails to get his points across but actually hurts his causes more than he helps.

Also, Don Cherry is the Canadian version of “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan, except with hockey instead of wrestling. Discuss.

How do you justify that when the other team has possession in your offensive zone though? I mean, you’re taking a foot of reach away from yourself if do it (which makes for some pretty wide passing lanes). I understand it if you’re in the corners or battling with someone in front of the net but in a passive box, that’s suicide.

Angles are mirrored, and pulling the puck off the boards with the backhand (and then successfully doing something with it) seems to be a tough move at NHL pace. I’m not sure what else you want as definitive proof – players don’t like switching sides. It rarely happens in the NHL, and not just because GMs like having “RD” and “LD” sitting next to each other.

our 6 D should have been Phanuef, Gunnar, Schenn, Komisarek, Franson and Liles. those are our 6 best D, if they dont fit well together with sides and all that then Burke should have made a move.

by pho king awesome on Jan 3, 2012 2:03 PM EST up reply actions

Don’t confuse what’s happened in the last few weeks with what happened at the time back at the start of October.

Franson didn’t have a strong camp, Gardiner did, and Gardiner deserved a chance to play in the NHL right off the hop. Gardiner probably does need to get a little bit of seasoning in the AHL but with Liles and Komisarek out that makes that kind of difficult.

Ideally, when everyone returns healthy, the 7 D on the Leafs would be Phaneuf, Gunnarsson, Schenn, Liles, Franson, Komisarek and Holzer, and Aulie and Gardiner would go to the Marlies.

But the “coulda woulda shoulda” is disingenious and ignores the reality of the situation, both past and present.

my point was that Franson should have had a spot on this team based on the fact of playing good hockey with a good defensive, playoff team. you said lebda did the same. a so-so camp for franson coupled with a really good one against weak competition for Gardiner shouldn`t change that in my mind, he easily could have started with the Marlies and come up when he started dominating, if he started dominating

This is incredibly circular logic.

He should get his starting spot but he should have to earn his spot but he shouldn’t lose his spot if someone else is better.

More importantly; it’s three months ago. Who the fuck cares? Is he one of the 6 best D available right now? Yes, because two guys are out.

by pho king awesome on Jan 3, 2012 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

that`s not fair at all, the leafs were left with a worse defensive team with Gardiner in the lineup

Bower Power is challenging the assumption on the field that Gardiner is worse defensively than Franson.

Gardiner has a higher Corsi rel QoC (-.237 v -.441), and though he has more o-zone starts (56.6% v 53.5), has a better zone finish (55.6% v 53.5).

So you’re suggesting that Franson not only is better defensively, but that he would be better defensively if he were playing on his off side. I call bull.

Beyond that, you’re suggesting that we should’ve traded someone on the right side, but Komisarek and Phaneuf aren’t moving, so it’s either Schenn or Franson for someone who plays left D, just so that we can free up space for the one who survives and so that Gardiner could play on the Marlies? What part of that makes sense?

just spitballing the way of having the best defense on this team. because obviously we need some help with that

by pho king awesome on Jan 3, 2012 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

Gardiner beat out Franson for a spot in training camp in part because there was no room on the right side and Franson couldn’t play the left side. But there’s a reason the Leafs tried to get Franson to play his off-side anyway, because they still wanted him in the lineup. When they realized he couldn’t play the left side, they decided to stick with Gardiner instead. When Komisarek got hurt, they put in Franson, and he’s been there since. Gardiner coming in and out of the lineup is a separate issue.

Professional cusser causer.

I think you’re approaching this wrong. Franson played RD and didn’t make the cut because the Leafs were/are heavily invested in the other 3 RD ahead of him (Komi, Schenn, Phaneuf). Franson was got for a bag of peanuts (actually, less than peanuts — Lebda).

by gettingcozywithsarkozy on Jan 3, 2012 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

I just ran a few quick numbers

turns out the more a D-man blocks shots on the PK, the more goals are scored (about 5% of variance).

This is even greater than the relationship between SA/60 and GA/60 (about 2% of variance).

Missed shots was basically unrelated to GA/60.

In other words, the last thing a D-man should do is attempt to block a lot of shots.

Move along. Nothing to see here...

by Van Ryn's Neurologist on Jan 3, 2012 1:38 PM EST reply actions

Eh, I don't think that's the conclusion to draw, here.

Your first two points, in my mind, explain each other.

If you’re blocking more shots, it’s because more shots are being fired at your net. The key to PK success is preventing shots.

Actually, Montreal cheers when one of their players dives, and it only turns to boos when they realize a penalty isn’t being called. It may be the most infuriating thing ever, right up there with singing Ole during a tie game.

true story

last year I went to a Habs @ Detroit game, and the Habs were down by 3-1 going into the third. The crowd was at least 2/3rds Habs fans.

One of “Les Glorieux” scores a goal, and it’s 3-2. The Habs start playing with gusto and look dangerous. The crowd goes into an Ole singing frenzy even BEFORE the score was tied, which it never was because the Red Wings hung on to their lead and then put it away with an empty netter.

But seeing legions of Habs fans with disappointment on their faces was priceless.
