Anyone able to point me to a place where I can find goal support given to each goalie without having to manually add it up like a tool?

A positive could be that Reimer might get the start tomorrow. Gus could have stopped two of those, especially the Penguins third goal which he failed to corral in the crease. Hopefully Wilson’s sophisticated “win and you’re in” goalie selection algorithm leads him to give Reimer a shot, especially in the 2nd half of a back to back.

The if Reimer’s back up to speed, fingers crossed, the sky’s the limit.

and i’m one of his biggest detractors.

Honestly? This game was bad luck and the whole team crapping the bed for 10 minutes. They deserved 2 pts but didn’t close it out. That’s what happened.

I’m not especially going to blame Gus, though he deserves some of it. The failure to at least get some decent puck possession or trapping game going in that final few minutes sealed the deal more than anything else.

Still, it’s enough of Gus’s fault that I can see Wilson going with Reimer tomorrow.

I hope so too. The positives are that he’s now had much longer to recover fully from his “concussion like symptoms”, and hopefully he’s been able to work with Allaire in practice for a few weeks to solidify his game.

If Wilson starts Reimer, tomorrow is (knock on wood) winnable. Pittsburg will either have to start a tired Fleury, who really had to put in an acrobatic performance tonight, or Johnson, who’s boasting a spectacular .876 sv% in 9 GP.

Legitimate question:

How much better is this Leafs team than those early post-lockout teams that barely missed the playoffs? If at all?

This team obviously has more prospects and is actually improving, unlike those JFJ teams. But from a pure talent standpoint, what do you guys think?

With a Sundin we’d be a top team.

The lack of franchise player like Sundin makes it a bit of a wash in my opinion. The Leafs directly post-lockout had outstanding offense from the back-end in players like Kaberle, McCabe, and Kubina, with mostly middling forwards and then Sundin. Of course, our goaltending was horror-awful and probably cost us one, if not two post-season appearances.

I would probably take this squad over any of the other ones, except maybe the 2005-2006 one.

Those teams ranged from ‘damn solid’ to ‘Sundin dragging us kicking and screaming’.

The goaltending was absolutely fucking atrocious.

Using shots to approximate puck possession (corsi/fenwick). SF/(SF+SA) suggests the 2006/2007 are the best team from puck possession. The better winning record this year (P%) is luck (but you remember Raycroft).

SF/(SF+SA) P%
2005/06 48.05% 0.549
2006/07 53.52% 0.555
2011/12 48.65% 0.560

A problem with using shots to estimate puck possession is that it ignores a lot of score effects. The 2009-2010 team that finished 29th in the league had 52.2% of the shots in games they played while San Jose had only 50.2% and even allowed more shots than the Leafs.

Yes, Toskala was truly awful.

What I mean to say, is that SJ was probably the far better team despite worse Shot % numbers. they also finished with 51 wins, 3rd in the league, and 113 points.

The Leafs in 2009-2010 had 74 points.

Ugh

For a little more context on how unlucky the Leafs were that season, they were the only team to average more than 32.0 shots per game with less than 100 points. The only other 3 teams were Detroit, Washington, and Chicago, who on average had 111.7 points.

111.7 >>>> 74.

I hate Tyler Seguin

7.8% shooting by the Leafs as a team that season

That is one of the problems with advanced stats they start in 2007/8. There is no nice database with close, tied shots totals (and road/home splits). The best we can do is approximate or “watch hockey”.

So how good would JFJ teams been with a league average goalie – I think they would have made playoffs which is about were the current team is.

by jeffgm on Feb 1, 2012 1:22 AM EST up reply actions

I think we can still do pretty well to estimate how good teams were, as long as we provide context. For example, although the 2005-2006 team was probably not very good possession-wise, they were completely dominant on the powerplay, and scored 102 goals there.

I definitely think that with a league average goaltender they could have made the playoffs and possibly even gone to the second round. I’m pretty sure it was Chemmy who did the calculation that they would have been a 102 point team with a league average goaltender. That’s nearly Cup-contender status.

The shot comparison might give 20% description so the other 80% is up for debate. Even Fenwick gets you to 30 to 40% so context is important.

And the low shot ratio, is not surprising this year with the trouble the team has clearing their zone. They have tons of talent but are also good at getting hemmed into their own end, turning over the puck which sure helps the shots against.

by jeffgm on Feb 1, 2012 1:35 AM EST up reply actions

It is a relief that Fenwick only gives 30% of the cause for variance in the standings because it is definitely not the Leafs strong-suit.

It is remarkable where the Leafs are given their overall goaltending and the extensive horror which is their PK.

Short answer: context.

Longer answer:

Those 9th place teams were on a downward trend, shells of what was once a solid playoff team.

This team, which hasn’t been relegated to 9th just yet, is slowly building its way from what has to be one of the most terrible Leafs teams I’ve seen in my lifetime.

The goaltending of those teams was absolutely atrocious; our starters were a broken down Ed Belfour and Andrew Raycroft. At least we can rest easy knowing Reimer and Gustavsson are generally capable of giving us .910 goaltending (at least moreso than those guys).

This team is also way speedier and younger. Remember Jason Allison? Eric Lindros? Hal Gill? Well, say hello to speedsters like Phil Kessel, Joffrey Lupul, Matt Lombardi, Matt Frattin. What was the average age of the Leafs in 2006, like 29? I think it’s closer to 26-27 now. Only two players over the age of 30 IIRC.

Way more offensive depth (that Sundin line effectively carried our scoring, as did the Sundin-Tucker-Wellwood PP line), and way better 5 v 5 play (see previous remark of PP).

I’d take this team in a heartbeat over those ones.

I’d take this team over most of the other ones long term every day of the week.

But in a series or a single game? I can just see a Poni-Sundin-Antropov line absolutely dominating any of our lines along the boards.

Kaberle and McCabe in their primes on the powerplay? Terrifying. Tucker causing ruckus? Pure agitation.

It’s a tough call.
