Donate to Jack Jablonski
I saw this link come across Deadspin last night:
Doctors at Hennepin County Medical Center say Benilde-St. Margaret’s sophomore Jack Jablonski has a severed spinal cord – the result of an accidental check from behind that sent him into the boards and down to the ice during a hockey game Friday in St. Louis Park.
We're a hockey blog. All of us watch hockey and are thankful for players who sacrifice a lot to entertain us, some of us play hockey and skate despite knowing the risks out there.
Jack Jablonski may never walk again, and as a hockey community it'd be a nice gesture if we donated money to him and his family for medical bills and family expenses. The hospital he's at set up a donation page that's available right here. (Edit: link removed, see comments).
Once you've done that, if you have a twitter account help spread the word and tweet:
I donated to Jack Jablonski at (link removed) #donatetojack
I don't know him, but I'm sure he'll appreciate it.

Even if you can only spare a couple dollars it’ll help guys, let’s get the hype machine rolling for someone in need.

God, that’s just awful.
"I myself am made up entirely of flaws, stitched together with good intentions."
Pretty much. Could be any one of us who laces up their skates. Could be any player we enjoy watching. It’s an absolute tragedy.

Yeah, as someone just learning to play the game it is definitely scary to read about. My thoughts are with him and his family.

Check out Hockey Wilderness’ coverage: http://www.hockeywilderness.com/2012/1/3/2678570/hockey-community-rallies-behind-injured-high-school-hockey-player
Lots of NHLers supporting this kid: Zdeno Chara, Mike Komisarek, Jake Gardiner…

Thanks for setting this up and drawing attention to it.
Always amazes me the good things that can be achieved by pant-less people hunched over laptops in their mothers’ basements.

How awesome is this kid?
Does anyone know how this actually happened? All I have found said it was an accidental check from behind as he was going into the corner.
Jack’s team was up by one goal 5 minutes and 48 seconds into the second period when he made a dash for the puck near the end boards with two Wayzata players in hot pursuit, said Chris McGowan, the Red Knights’ JV coach.
McGowan said two players rammed Jablonski from behind, smashing him into the boards, and he collapsed motionless to the ice.
Link here, as well as an awesome picture of his entire team hanging out in his hospital room.

From the same article
Jack was in the offensive zone and was coming around the net when the two Wayzata players slammed into him, his father said. "It was just a very hard hit.
So was this like a touch icing hit, then? There are three different scenarios as to how this happened, and two of them are by the same author. The author seems to write two completely different things… ‘coming around the net’ implies that he had already rounded the net, in which case I fail to see how he was checked from behind into boards… or was he behind the net skating to the corner and was checked into the corner boards?
either way terrible thing to happen and hope he can at least regain full movement of his hands/fingers/arms once the swelling subsides
Just an FYI, it seems that Caring Bridge’s donation page is not a direct donation to the Jablonski family, but to Caring Bridge as a charity in general.

Yeah, and it seems as though the service the provide, is the webpage to share thoughts and whatnot with his family.

Got this email from CaringBridge:
Stephanie.Hunter@caringbridge.org
Good Evening,
First of all, thank you for using your reach to help communicate about Jack Jablonski. It looks like the hockey community really is tight-knit and steps up to help each other! I am writing today to help clear up some confusion about where the donations are going when your visitors click on the link in your blog.
This information is incorrect:
The hospital he’s at set up a donation page that’s available right here.
CaringBridge is a nonprofit website and the donations given in tribute to Jack through the links on his CaringBridge website go to help support our mission to amplify love, hope and compassion. As a 501c3 organization, we are unable to disburse the funds to the family.
At the heart of CaringBridge, we’re about caring for each other. This means, it is also important to us that people’s intentions, when they donate, are honored. If they are meaning to donate to Jack directly, we want to make sure they are able to do so.
Please make a correction so that your visitors are able to get the funds directly to Jack Jablonski. Thank you for your help!
Best regards,
Stephanie Hunter

On one hand it’s a little disappointing that they have such a prominent “DONATE” button, but at least they literally go out of their way to track people down and let them know they can’t give them money.
I’m sorry for passing along the link, though if you’re mad at me I donated money too.

What’s the new link? It looks like the email had a link to a different spot?
