Look Around You

Look around you. Look around you. Just look around you. Have you worked out what we're looking for? Correct. The answer is 'Competent Goaltending'. Competent Goaltending can be found in Chapter 10 of the textbook that accompanies this series. Be sure to have your copy books ready, to make notes from the screen.

Experiment 1:

An experiment was carried out to see if Jonas Gustavsson was capable of being a competent goaltender. The conclusion: not usually. Write that down in your copy books now.

Experiment 2:

An experiment was carried out to see if James Reimer was capable of being a competent goaltender. The conclusion: usually. Write that down in your copy books now.

Experiment 3:

An experiment was carried out to see if Jonas Gustavsson had become a competent goaltender. The conclusion? Sigh. Write that down in your copy books now.

Gustavsson is getting the start over Reimer tonight.

I wouldn’t put it past Burke to say something like this to him and then just hang up prank call-style

by SlickWill on Jan 5, 2012 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

I didn’t really mean from Burke…you think Murray wants Lupul back after trading him twice? No way. My guess is he’d want one of Schenn/Gunnarsson/Franson plus one of Kadri/Colborne/another close prospect or two and a 1st pick. Just to start.

by Goosemonster on Jan 5, 2012 9:59 AM EST up reply actions

We know that what Anaheim needs more than anything is depth, particularly at forward. The idea I was tossing around was something like MacArthur + Kadri + one of Bozak or Grabovski. Gives them an entire second line in one move.

See the thing I’m thinking is that Anaheim in this mess because they lack depth. We finally have some and will ship it out for one player. Now whether you’re okay with this probably hinges on if you believe Burke can do an adequate job replacing the depth lost via another trade or free agent signing.

Anaheim’s in this mess because they got old.

Adding depth while trading away one of their three best players doesn’t fix them.

They’re going to half-ass this and end up being a completely messed up hockey team, when they should be blowing it up, add Yakupov or Grigorenko, and add to their collection of young players coming up.

Fowler, Yaku/Grigo, Etem, Palmieri, Smith-Pelley, and everything they get for their big three. That’s a goddamned hockey team.

Sure, but from the Leafs perspective, do we have the expendable assets to get a guy like Getzlaf or Ryan without damaging our ability to ice a team deep enough to be a legit contender.

we’re not a contender this year, and Depth is something that builds over time. Remember, only now are we starting to get these young, Burke drafted players into our NHL system regularly (my guess is Kadri stays up if he keeps this play up) and each year we’ll add more: McKegg and Ross come up to the AHL next year, possibly among another one or two guys.

by Goosemonster on Jan 5, 2012 10:12 AM EST up reply actions

Sure, but those guys are all question marks really. We don’t have too many players like Stajan, Hagman, Poni and Antro who were clearly not going to be part of a winning team yet still had value. Too bad we didn’t keep Versteeg he would be a nice chip in this sort of deal.

Oh yeah I didn’t meant to say they were NHLers, but if you add that depth to the AHL team, the best guys will earn spots and fight there way up here. Some of those will pan out in some capacity, even if its a good 3rd/4th liner call-up that allows you to keep winning (while not young or drafted by us, think Crabb/Boyce players that replace your regulars relatively well)

by Goosemonster on Jan 5, 2012 10:17 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t think so, not yet. I don’t think we even have what it takes to win a bidding war if he goes up on the block.

by lucc on Jan 5, 2012 10:13 AM EST up reply actions

only reason I think we have a shot is the long trading history between Murray and Burke, they seem to like to give each other a fair shake.

by Goosemonster on Jan 5, 2012 10:15 AM EST up reply actions

I just got a sinking feeling… wouldn’t he be a PERFECT fit in Florida? And the Panthers have the prospects to acquire him without a doubt.

by lucc on Jan 5, 2012 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe, but the Ducks don’t want just prospects, they want roster players – not sure Florida, in 3rd place or so, willl part with some key roster players at this point. Off-season? Yeah for sure. Now-ish? I dont know…

more than that, Anaheim has a clear core group of players. They want to turn it around for next season, not 3-5 years from now when some of their core guys’ contracts finish. So I think its clear they want roster players, and my guess is they want younger guys like Schenn/Franson, etc. etc. to join the team right away.

If the Leafs are ever going to trade Kadri, Getzlaf or Ryan is the kind of player I’d trade him for. Schenn, Kadri and a first I’d do for sure. On top of their age, they’re under contract and salary controllable. Anaheim’s not a cap team and will not be taking players like Grabbo because they’re not cost-effective.

A player like Bobby Ryan doesn’t become available often. I agree those are our priorities (hence Getzlaf over Ryan) but if Ryan is available, you definitely strongly consider it.

by Goosemonster on Jan 5, 2012 11:06 AM EST up reply actions

He’s the same age as Kessel and he’s cost-controlled for an extra year.

They could ride Kessel and Ryan’s entire apex for about 70 goals and 130-150 points a year and have an extra $2-3 million to spend versus other teams because those guys are locked down.

Remember that time when Bobby Ryan was being shopped, and Burke was asked if they were interested in him, and his response was along the lines of “we can’t talk about players under contract”, so he wouldn’t say yes or no? Suddenly, they can talk about “fit” and whether or not he “fits” in Toronto.

What I’m saying is that, just in case it wasn’t really clear – if Burke says he “can’t talk about someone,” he’s probably thinking about them.

1. Getzlaf

3. Perry
4. Nash

Is there any reason you guys would rather have Ryan than Getzlaf other than age? I think a big, strong centre is a bigger need for the club, and at 26 Getzlaf still has at least a few good years ahead of him.

Age and contract.

Getzlaf and Perry are under contract for next season and then are UFAs.

Nash has a much higher cap hit and is under contract seemingly forever.

Ryan’s under contract for three more seasons, so he’s basically cost-controlled for his entire 24-28 year old apex as a player.

I don’t think they’re looking that deeply into it. Wilson’s trying to win games.

by lucc on Jan 5, 2012 10:15 AM EST up reply actions

Honestly, I think it’s just the PK SV% advantage that Gus has. Sure, Gus will let in a weak goal every game, guaranteed, often at clutch moments.

But at least on the PK, he’s been OK. That .792 SV % vs a .699 % for Reimer can make a big difference in the Leafs game. Maybe the Leafs played so poorly in December because they’re so afraid of going on the PK. (I know you’re going to say that a three goal performance isn’t poor play, but for this team it’s often not enough. Also, you will say that it didn’t prevent the Leafs from taking bad penalties, but playing tentatively and still taking bad penalties isn’t mutually exclusive)

When our PK wasn’t as bad (back in November) we were at least winning games.

by clrkaitken on Jan 5, 2012 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

Wilson’s probably betting that Gus can get up to that .907 overall percentage he showed in November, if he lets him get “hot”.

We’ll see. If the Leafs do improve their PK, I’m sure we’ll see Reimer tried out behind it at some point.

I’m still not a fan of Wilson, but mostly I blame Burke for not picking up a vet goalie this summer. Ray Emery, who entered the Blackhawks training camp without a contract, just on a tryout, is sporting a 9-2-2 record and a .908%, 2.54 GAA. We should have had him, or someone like him, taking over while Reimer sorts himself out.

How should a Getzlaf trade package compare with the Carter and Richards packages the Flyers got this summer?

Getzlaf at his best is more dominant offensively, but Carter and Richards were locked up long-term (very long-term), at least as good as Getzlaf defensively, as young as Getzlaf and not horribly slumping like Getzlaf is now. Put all that together and I don’t think the Ducks should be able to command a bigger package than the Flyers did for those two.

Not that those returns were trivial, of course.

Am I the only one who thinks that the cost for those two might have been low because there wasn’t a bidding war established. Same with the Joe Thorton to San Jose trade back in 05? (I think it was 05 anyways) You have to figure that if more than 3 teams knew players of that caliber were available the return would have been higher.

I think that’s about right, although if it’s Schenn and Colborne, you might get away with replacing the 1st with a 2nd rounder or another young player.

by Varry Galk on Jan 5, 2012 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

Grabbo is an ideal trade candidate, i’d be sad to see him go as he’s one of our best forwards in terms of puck possession and generating offence but he’s an expiring contract to UFA status so I’m not sure how much other teams would value that lack of control.

Kulimen’s value is probably quite low right now.

Colborne probably could be a prospect heading the other way as his value is likely good. I think Schenn is the guy the Ducks’ would be looking at as the centrepiece of any major trade.

I don’t think it’s a question about age, rather one about how much of an awkward social outcast somebody was that they feel the need in their late teens and 20s to dress up like a wizard wielding a dorky wand and play out their imagination through a video game.

by gettingcozywithsarkozy on Jan 5, 2012 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

People have been playing out their imaginations with books for hundreds of years. When you get right down to it, all fiction, video games, movies, television shows, etc are forms of escapism, and there’s nothing wrong with that in moderation.

once again, refer to my comment below, I admit that I enjoy a ren fair every now and then, and have never actually been to a tailgate. Dorks are just people who get excited about things they like. Nothing wrong with that. What’s dorkier – Someone dressing up as Spiderman for 1 convention a year, or a person who decorates their house in swag with the logo of their favorite team and wears a jersey of their favorite player for every game they watch on TV? They’re roughly equivalent in what’s being done, but 1 is clearly more radical.

But I agree with your sentiment. Until the Internet, no other stockpile of information was available for free, to anyone, regardless of class or wealth. Most places guard that information vehemently. Think old guilds, artisians and the like.

Sending out the Cox Bloc Bat Signal

From today’s horseshit screed by Bruce Dowbiggan:

Winter Classic Future: No sooner had Usual Suspects suggested that Canadian teams need not apply for an NHL Winter Classic Game (and HBO 24/7 treatment) than rumours cropped up that the Detroit Red Wings will host the Toronto Maple Leafs next January at either Comerica Park in Detroit or the University of Michigan’s 109,000-seat football stadium. Which could mean a Winter Classic & 24/7 team that did not make the playoffs the year before. We won’t suggest which team, but do point out that Detroit is currently in a playoff spot.

But when it comes to the Maple Leafs, the exceptions are the rules (Owners with two NHL teams at the same time?). And why not? You could hold a bottle drive with the Leafs and still get a million people watching on TV. So it’s always going to pay off in attendance and ratings. To say nothing of four weeks of Brian Burke as Citizen Kane ("You’re right, I did lose a million dollars last year. I expect to lose a million dollars this year. I expect to lose a million dollars next year. You know, Mr. Thatcher, at the rate of a million dollars a year, I’ll have to close this place in… 60 years.")

Attendance and ratings? Bruce, being one of the Globe’s media commentators, presumably knows that Canadian viewers wouldn’t be counted in any American-based evaluation of the number of households watching HBO’s program, right? That is to say that he would know that when HBO opens up its ratings reports, they know that those reports refer to the number/proportion of American households watching HBO. He would also presumably be able to reason, with some justification, that (oddball exceptions such as Chemmy, LD, Skinny, Blurr and many others hereabouts) the majority of Leaf fans live north of the border. So he would surely understand that to suggest that the Leafs are being inserted into 24/7 by either the league or the network in some attempt to artificially inflate American ratings…well that would just be bullshit, right? So that would mean that whatever kind of anti-Leafs bellyaching is going on here amounts to confused and aimless baby crying, right?

Secondly, the reference to Brian Burke and Citizen Kane…WTF? Anyone?

I would also pause to note that elsewhere in the same article, Mr. Dowbiggan opines at length about the “excellent night” that TSN’s broadcasters had during the recent WJC semi-final. Not sure you’d find agreement among the legions of viewers who noted – among other similar transgressions – that Miller, Ferrarro et al conspicuously declined to point out an obvious (and unpenalized) punch to the throat of a Russian player by Connolly early in the third.

Seems like the sort of thing some youthful zambonics or blocked Coxes might be interested in. Just sayin’. (And waiting in hopeful anticipation.)

If he’s got some powers to be able to concretely declare this, I gotta start talking to him when I play PRO-LINE, cause right now, only a tie-breaker is keeping Toronto from being “in a playoff spot” as he says.

Quebec City? Home of the Quebec “National Assembly”? Really?

by Goosemonster on Jan 5, 2012 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

Sure

Historically, QC didn’t have the same English Upper Class / French Working Class tensions Montreal did. Montreal used to have an English team (the Maroons) and a French team (the Habs)

The city is French (not french & English), and the team history is newer. They’ve got nothing to prove. While the coach better make an effort to speak to the media in French, I don’t think fans would care in the same way. They’ll just be happy to get one back. I don’t think they’d be stupid enough to want Tippet replaced if the team is successful. None of that ‘team identity’ bs.

by samspade on Jan 5, 2012 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

I guess I’m saying it’s a Habs fan thing, not a Quebecois thing.

I could be wrong.

by samspade on Jan 5, 2012 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

knowing many, many Quebecois, while your history is mostly right, I totally disagree. A coach in Quebec City will have to be francophone, it’ll be a huge issue otherwise. It’s an all-french town. Not even like Montreal where like 20% are english.

by Goosemonster on Jan 5, 2012 2:30 PM EST up reply actions

It’s irrelevant because it’s not ingrained in the history of the franchise.

The Canadiens were rooted in the Original 6 era of the game, where they had territorial rights to every Quebecois player.

The Nords were established in the WHA and the the post-expansion NHL, so they’ve only ever known the side of the game where you have to take the best players available regardless of their heritage. I mean, the most famous players in Nordiques history are three Slovakian brothers, a kid from BC and a kid from Sweden.

Cynically Sarcastic

Nords were the Quebec nationalist team before they left. When they left, those people either switched to the QMJHL team near them (some), stopped watching (some) or, more rarely, switched to support the only other “Quebecois” team left, the Canadians.

Plus

If i know my hockey folklore correctly, the Habs and Nords fans had a total bloodfeud going. So I imagine there would be a bit of a push to be the opposite of Montreal.

The one reason the coach would have to speak French would be that, unlike in Montreal, a lot of the fanbase would be actually unilingual. But if he spoke French on the level of, say, Malkin’s english, I don’t think the fans would care that much.

by samspade on Jan 5, 2012 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

they hated each other a lot, but if you’re Quebecois and you want to cheer for a team in teh NHL, there’s no one else but the Canadians. They aren’t cheering for some anglo team – definitely not Toronto or Ottawa, and the West? pffffft.

I actually kind of agree with Burke on one thing: I don’t think these cheap shot guys are going to get punished sufficiently by either the referees or the league disciplinarians to actually prevent that from becoming the new norm. I don’t know what to do about it (I think a player like Orr leaving is good for hockey) but I don’t think Carcillo getting 7 games for that dirty, filthy cheap-shot of a hit is going to stop this from continuing at all.

by Goosemonster on Jan 5, 2012 4:19 PM EST reply actions

Phaneuf, Aulie, and Boyce all tried to fight Downie. Why does it need to be a career fighter like Orr? Is Orr supposed to be more intimidating because he can drop his gloves off the faceoff to fight against Parros, Carkner, and DJ King?

RIP Former-and-forever Leaf Wade Belak
Me on Twitter

by Bower Power on Jan 5, 2012 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I don’t know why he was defending Orr given the way the game has gone (other than him being a good guy off the ice, which I know nothing about). I just mean the league may need to figure out a better way to do this if that’s the path they want to pursue.

Although for the record, Phaneuf didn’t try to fight Downie. Downie tried to goad phaneuf, Aulie and Boyce stepped in. Downie didn’t want to fight anyone, just draw a penalty (mind you, he took one)

by Goosemonster on Jan 5, 2012 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

The Downie thing was one of the few times I wished Orr was still around. I’m willing to lose him for a misconduct for regardless of Downie’s desire to fight, grabbing and beating him into a bloody pulp for taking a run like that at our captain.

I think that’s what Burke was getting at. He started by saying that players used to police themselves, then the enforcer evolved. Now guys don’t answer the bell, a la Downie and enforcers are gone, so he’s worried about what will result from that. Not saying I agree, but I think that’s his concern.

What did Downie do that was such a blight on the game, exactly? He tried to get under the Leafs’ skin by playing on the edge of the rules and generally making a nuisance of himself. He was 100% in Dion’s head and he convinced Tim Connolly of all people that an elbow to the chops was a good idea.

For the most part his antics worked and if his goalies hadn’t been sieves he would have done a great job in doing so. I still have no idea why the refs broke up the fight between him and Aulie and then him and Boyce.

Basically I tolerate Downie over Raffi Torres or Dan Carcillo running around and legitimately endangering other players with their bullshit.

Cynically Sarcastic

What he did is a big part of Downies job is it not, just like Armstrong, Marchand, other guys like that. If you can take a guy out of the game by making him drop the gloves you’re doing your team a favor as long as that player is a big part of the team ie Dion.

by TheCeej on Jan 5, 2012 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldn’t say Downie “convinced” Connolly to elbow him in the chops in the traditional sense, more or less made tim raise his arm in an “oh fuck!” fashion as he charged with his own elbow aimed at the noggin
but other than that I agree
