Leafs 4 Jets Gustavsson'd

Photo

On the back of two games in which Jonas Gustavsson allowed a combined three goals while the Leafs put up 11 the Toronto Maple Leafs are now one of only six teams in the East with a positive goal differential. That list is: Boston, New York, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington, and the Toronto Fuckin' Maple Leafs.

GIF party while we wait for news about Phaneuf's chops.

45 points in 40 games equates to a 91 point pace.

If they beat Detroit on Saturday, they get to 47 points in 41 games, which equates to a 94 point pace.

I wanted to respond to your post in the GDT but never got a chance, re: Florida and Ottawa’s goal differentials.
But it’s the Leafs who have a high team PDO (despite the terrible goaltending, Leafs have a high team S%) and mediocre possession statistics (<50% Fenwick during close games, last I checked).

I’d expect Ottawa to regress, but Florida actually has decent Fenwick numbers and a PDO you’d expect to swing upwards.

I’m okay with where we are right now (very young, stockpiling assets, decent cap management) but I think we’ll be pretty hard pressed to make the playoffs this year.

by Shift on Jan 5, 2012 11:58 PM EST reply actions

Wait… I am looking at the numbers wrong.
Disregard, haha

by Shift on Jan 6, 2012 12:00 AM EST up reply actions

UGH

I think I did have the Fenwick numbers right. EMBARRASSING

Fenwick %, score close
FLA 51.52
OTT 50.95
TOR 48.20

Leafs PDO is 1008, Florida at 1000.

Conclusions:
- Leafs will likely not continue to shoot the lights out as a team, especially since they seem to have the ice tilted against them
- However, Reimer will probably improve his SV% since his PKSV% is inexplicably abysmal (likely factors out of his control)
- Florida is getting surprisingly good goaltending (despite their even PDO), but they are also better than we are at controlling play, which will help mitigate any regression with SV%
- Burke will save us by trading for Getzlaf/Ryan/Carter
