We said back then that he had about a 5-10% chance of turning it around and being an NHL caliber goalie. If he keeps this up, then he’ll do and become one of the few exceptions to the rule, which is great for the Toronto Maple Leafs. If you think that I feel like there’s egg on my face that Gustavsson is doing well, then you’re completely wrong. I’ve got a smile because the Leafs are winning hockey games.

We’re all happy Gus won tonight and has played almost six weeks of great hockey right now. He’s still a very long way from being a dependable average-ish starter.

No I didn’t. You have difficulty understanding anything that could possibly be construed as negative to Jonas Gustavsson.

I was telling daoust that I’d bet money Gustavsson is an NHL goaltender next year given that people offered two worse goalies playing time.

it’s actually a fair comparison.

you can no more convince me of what ‘blue’ is than you can convince me of what constitutes an NHL goaltender.

you could say that blue is a wavelength between particular frequencies, and an NHL goaltender is someone with a SV% above some number.

but what I see as ‘blue’ might be broader than your definition.

I’m intensely skeptical that the Leafs will play in the Winter Classic.

Look at NBC/Versus appearances: the Leafs make one this season. If they were a great draw for US TV they’d be on more. Or maybe more importantly if NBC/Versus thought the Leafs were a good draw on TV they’d have more than one appearance.

The Winter Classic has two popular East Coast teams for TV ratings. I just don’t see it with the Leafs.

Gus

Just wanted to point out…the issue with Gustavsson has always been consistency. He’s had plenty of little runs of good play. I don’t think two games in January and two games in November really show he’s a vastly improved goalie.

i don’t think there’s really anything wrong with what he’s said…

except, as i pointed out, his streak isn’t just 1-or-2 games. if you go back further, he’s still doing quite well. he’s STARTING to show signs of consistency.

whether or not he can be consistent consistently is still in question.

Move along. Nothing to see here...

by Van Ryn's Neurologist on Jan 7, 2012 11:11 PM EST up reply actions

In his past ten games he has five below .900. His “run” is two games back to back in November, and the last two, with a lot of “meh” in the middle.

That said this is the second week he’s bailed the Leafs out while Reimer hasn’t been around / been able to carry the load. I think long term Reimer’s PK SV% normalizes but right now it’s a horror show.

by daoust on Jan 7, 2012 11:13 PM EST up reply actions

totally true. which is why it’s possible (although somewhat less likely) that last season ist the anomaly and he’s really a .920 goalie.

Interestingly enough,

EV SV% for Reimer

10-11: .933
11-12: .935

Gustavsson

09-10: .910
10-11: .910
11-12: .911

Notice anything?

No, it’s to point out that EV SV% is what it is. Goalies are up and down year after year but for the most part their EV SV% stays around the same.

Reimer had a .921 last year and has a .900 this year and yet at evens he stops shots at the same rate.
