I don't think the discount is the issue

But if you think about it, that discount is what makes him a much more attractive trade piece; so players who take a home-town discount are upping their trade value since they’re locked in at a lower fare for longer. So of course they want an NTC to go with it, which Burke doesn’t like doing.

That said – he’s a player I wouldn’t be afraid of giving one. Don’t think he’ll get one though.

It’s too bad there’s no mechanism to bridge this gap, like an salary-expire-on-trade / arbitrator-set-salary-on-trade clause or something, so players aren’t afraid to give a discount without demanding an NTC…

Going into the season I was keeping an open mind on this, thinking of scenarios that I would be OK with whether Grabbo was traded or stayed with the team.

But my mind is made up now. Unless he wants just crazy stupid money (and given the agent`s comments I don`t think that`s the case) I want the Leafs to re-sign Grabbo. His contributions to the team are so impressive, clearly he`s a critical piece to the Leaf puzzle.
