The frustrating zzzz games have a consistent theme. The opponents hug, tug and obstruct the leafs forwards negating their speed and passes. Then they force the puck carrier to low quality perimeter shot or dump in. And we know how well the leafs forecheck the dump and chase. And then on the next rush the leafs repeat though occasionally kessel or a forward sneaks in behind the coverage for a scoring chance.

The difference is that the Habs know the Leafs have the better team and they’re on home ice, so they’re playing it perfectly by mucking it up and capitalizing on chances that go their way. And they’re relying on their goalie to make the saves, which is their game plan. In that way, they’re playing better than the Leafs.

Trapping teams do exactly that: capitalize on mistakes. They’ve prevented the leafs from scoring by mucking it up. And I wouldn’t classify those chances by Kessel as breakaways. He shot it at the faceoff dot both times.
by holymackinaw on Feb 11, 2012 8:57 PM EST up reply actions

So, basically, as long as we get close to 85-90 points or so, we’re completely fine even if we finish every year for five years in ninth place? That’s ridiculous. The goal is the Cup, and no playoffs equals no Cup.
It’s the same situation as the Blue Jays. Oh yeah, they keep improving every year and we know it, but as long as they can’t compete with the Yankees and Red Sox on top, it’s all for naught in the end.
Firing a coach after not making the playoffs after a few years is not a random point at all. It’s a normal act, and it has every possible occurrence of happening to Wilson. I’m not saying yes or no yet, but I’m also not Brian Burke.

I know it’s only one game, but I think it’s becoming clearer that we need to acquire a goalie. Reimer has good ES numbers, but in a small sample size, and Gus is wildly inconsistent. They both are, and we can’t afford inconsistent goaltending. Even if we have a consistent average goalie it would probably be better than what we have right now.

ok well
hate to break it to you guys but the recent string of hotness was when the MGK line was playing way over their heads luck wise and production wise. Their points are going to tail off.
The KBL line wasn’t as crazy hot – but they’re in the 2nd half. We also had crazy good goaltending.
We’re likely to dip again for a bit – but it’s not going to automatically mean we crash and burn.
if we don’t make the playoffs it’ll hurt but realistically we are still an 8th-10th place team.

Unless you're -27 with 11 points
For all the shittiness of the stat, -27 and +10 is a big fuckin’ difference, considering you play defence

At 22
Chara was gangly and awkward, and -27.
At 23, Chara had 9 points all season, and was also -27 again. Milbury pulls the plug.
At 24, Chara is a +30 with 23 points with the sens
The average guy on the Islanders back then was probably -20 (as I recall they were really awful back then). The Sens were much better, and Chara probably had his breakout year right after the trade.
Which probably continues to illustrate that Milbury is a moron. lol.

I don’t think that too many people would argue that d-men tend to get better with age, but what’s the point about +/- you’re trying to make?
The Roar of the Masses Could be Farts.
by Self Destructive Zones on Feb 11, 2012 10:16 PM EST up reply actions
I don't give a flying fuck
This wasn’t about +/- to begin with.
I’m trying to illustrate how young defencemen are inconsistent and unstable, which is why it’s too early to pull the plug on Schenn.
Then someone said +/- is useless. I agree to a point – if you’re -27 two seasons in a row on the blue line, you have made some mistakes that year.
Well it became about +/- (you referenced Brett Lebda, after all) but that’s a fair enough point.
The Roar of the Masses Could be Farts.

Even though +/- is a broken stat, it’s supporting the thesis just as much as Chara’s point totals over those two years.

Wrong.

-27 on the Islanders back then is bad, and +10 on the Leafs right now is better. However, the difference isn’t as big as it looks.

If I’m the Islanders I don’t trade the #2 overall pick straight up for Yashin…let alone throw in Chara.
But then, I’m not Mike Milbury.

Losing to Montreal on my birthday is on thing, but losing on Sundin night is another, that’s fucking embarrising. Sorry for the poor spelling I’m drunk. this is terrible way to introduce myself.
