It’s not a great option, but I can see a lot of problems with Gustavsson cutting to the outside of Schenn when he doesn’t have visibility of the puck. Paddle down, with his head looking between Schenn’s legs is probably the best option for Gus, but the best option for the team is for Schenn not to be providing a screen.

How? How is squishing down there advantageous? Is the shooter going to cut left through Schenn? Then Gus needs to make a half step and block it. The risk/reward is much lower on that post than to play up more there.

Oh that’s part of it. The other part is a defense that can’t seem to coordinate with the forwards in the neutral zone. Which when you get down to it is a coaching problem. And yet another part of it is a goalie that can’t save a breakaway or a penalty shot to save his life.

At this point, I like to remind myself of objective projections for our season from October. Here is one from The Hockey News
The big question: Was the offense from Toronto’s No. 2 line last year an aberration or a sign of good things to come? The MacArthur-Grabbo-Kulemin combo will get even more cover this season with Tim Connolly feeding Phil Kessel on the top trio, but they must produce if the Leafs are to succeed.
Outlook: The Maple Leafs made a late-but-in-vain playoff push last year and added a bunch of veterans to get them over the hump. Starting goalie James Reimer will play a bigger role than any of those newcomers, but to finish ahead of where we’ve predicted them to land, they’ll need to avoid the injury bug and get better years from basically everyone on the roster. THN PREDICTION: 10th in East.
So there you go. Most of the PPP crew predicted 9th (possibly secretly hoping for 8th but not jinxing it too much.) But anyway, we’ll probably get a top 10 pick out of it.

Every team goes through a poor stretch.
I honestly think I’d rather go through it now and get it over with and catch fire heading into the playoffs. Despite the way we’ve played the past 4 games, we’re still in a decent position heading into the stretch run.
You have to think Burke makes a move now though. All the good feelings from the previous little run have dissipated.
there’s not that many games left, bad games now cost a lot. especially when they are against teams close to you in points (Winnipeg) or crappy teams (Canadiens)
