As much as I would the Leafs to catch the Sens, it really isn’t looking likely barring all out collapse. Best hope is for the SE to continue to wallow.
So, apparently I can now be followed.. but no stalking. @alsonamedphil
Actually, I think the Sens are due for a bit of a slump. Craig Anderson, at the end of February 2009, posted a sparkling .926 save %, with about 51 games played. In March 2009, he was down to .894.
He’s already at 55 games now, and their backup is Auld, whose save % is .883.

We’re making the playoffs with some honour — by winning our games so much that those behind us just can’t catch up.
As for the sens, always cheer against them in general. Although it would be great if Karlsson gets like 80 pts this year so i can sell high on him in my fantasy league, and so the Sens re-up Oleg Tverdovsky 2.0 for $9M a year

It shouldnt, trade Connolly for a ham sandwich if he’s preventing us from re-signing Grabbo, who is much better and more valuable to this team. My worry is mostly related to term, or anything higher than 5.5 million.
by Goosemonster on Feb 22, 2012 3:42 PM EST up reply actions
Grabovski is one of three Leafs forwards with a positive Corsi ON (the other 2 are MacA and Kessel). He scores goals at nearly twice the rate of Bozak and three times the rate of Connolly. He’s capable of performing well against top competition. If the Leafs trade him and go into next season with Bozak/Connolly/Colborne down the middle, we may as well go full rebuild because we’re not making the playoffs.

In an unprecedented move 9 teams in the Eastern Conference have decided to officially "pass" on the playoffs
sure, and he scored a good overtime winner (after turning it over and nearly blowing the game, but still). He still provides nowhere near 4.75 million in value.
by Goosemonster on Feb 22, 2012 4:20 PM EST up reply actions
he’s not a 25 goal scorer, nor has he been a 20 goal scorer. I know he’s not a scorer. But he also hasn’t been a very creative or dynamic offensive player.

Joe Pavelski is not available for anything less than the entire fucking moon.
The guy is currently playing really well on a good value contract.
Marleau – Thornton – Pavelski are San Jose’s everything line: high scoring against the best competition. True Power vs Power.
Add to that, Pavelski and Cotoure are pretty clearly the successors to Thornto and Marleau.
if they are getting Nash, you have to think Pavelski’s going the other way, if they are saying Coutoure isn’t available.

Dion has higher ES Pts/60. Phaneuf with more OZone starts, but also a better OZone finish-start. Suter higher shooting percentage on the season, Dion lower PDO.
I kinda just said Phaneuf because everyone was saying Suter – and I think it is surprisingly close when you’re just looking at offense – but Suter’s defensive play should put him over the edge between the two. I’ll tell you one thing, though: I’m slightly salivating at the prospect of both.

I was thinking about Connolly. It seems that many players that enter the UFA market are small money hungry forwards (cammarelli, richards), injured or injury prone players (connolly) and underachieving players (penner next year). There are a few good beauchi or macarthur but these players are often other teams problems

But I’m not sure I like this deal. He just turned 29. I might have gone higher salary, shorter term.
Still, I think you gusy are laughing at the Canes too much. They aren’t going to tear the team down, and I don’t see why they need too. Eric Staal had a bad year, if he bounces back and is a top guys again next year this team can make the playoffs.

If they sell everything, and Staal does bounce back, then they will need support guys… like Ruutu, Gleason etc.
The East is wide open, they can compete for a playoff spot next year. If they sell off all their supports they will be mired in shit, just like the Oilers (who are probably about to move their best possesion forward for lottery tickets).

Pavelski 58GP 22G 24A, 27 years old, plays tough defensive minutes with great success, can also play well as a two way centre, signed for 2 more years after this one at 4mil
Nash 60GP 20G 22A, 27 Years old, is an awesome power forward who would definitley score more playing on Thornton’s wing, can’t play centre though, is signed at 7.8mil cap hit for 5 years
Havlat admittedly has negative value right now. He has been bad.
But I don’t know if I like this deal. Cotoure & Pavelski could be a damn good 1& 2 centre punch over the next few years as Thronton ages, and I bet both come cheaper than Nash.
Now, Nash > Pavelski? Sure. But I don’t know that he is better enough to make it worth it. All in all, I’d say it’s not a good idea for San Jose.
What if you looked at things the otherway?
We have an abundance of good defenceman
Schenn, Franson, Gunnarsson, Liles, Komisarek all have their strengths which may attract some clubs, and none of them are really untouchable unlike Phaneuf and Gardiner.
Which clubs are interested in acquiring a blueliner and what could they offer to help out the leafs?
Last year, Boston was the team who took Kaberle and we got a pretty good return on him.. I’m assuming Burke will probably try the same approach again.

My new goal: To get the nickname Hebrew Hammer for Mike Brown to take off.
Cory Schneider has never played more than 25 games in a season, and he’s on one of the best teams in the league. Throwing anything of substance at a goalie with only 57 career games and no experience as a starter is just fucking stupid, especially when their numbers are likely being influenced by being on a strong team.
Toskala only had 110 games total prior to being traded here. His most active season he played 38 games and had a .908. I can’t believe I convinced myself he was going to be our answer in net.
That's "Da-ooo". Oh, and I tweet now too @dannyd1976.
This is why I firmly say “No more trading for back-up goalies regardless of how awesome we think they might be if they have an incredibly small number of NHL games played”
Seriously trading for a Schneider or Bernier who has never played regularly at an NHL level is like taking a shot on a a certain San Jose back up who looked pretty good with the Sharks

Backstrom always seems like the kinda guy who would bomb if he went to another team, but I’d do it. He only has one major failure of a season, and the team wasn’t very good that year.
Can’t wait to see Lundqvist’s new contract. Given Rinne’s, it should be sky high.
RIP Former-and-forever Leaf Wade Belak

If the Wild give up on playoffs they may want to dump salary and hopefully Backstrom (or Harding). The big salary would be useful if they are in the Team Parise sweepstakes. Tin Foil Conspiracy I know.
And after seeing Bryz, I’m worried about how some goaltenders seem to shrivel under run and gun.
I could see why no goalie would want to play for the leafs = even Thomas or Lundquist would find themselves solidly out of the vezina running on the leafs. .
Flip side
When and you become a god. We still talk about Potvin in hushed tones, and Cujo was so amazing that we are willing to largely forget his fairly uninspiring second stint. If someone actually backstopped the Leafs to a cup, they probably would get a legitimate statue. I’d trade a Vezina for a statue.

I am talking about overpaying a guy with history of starter load and elite level play (Rinne). Paying out the ear to acquire a guy without a history of a starter is another thing (and now I am starting to see the comparison between Toskala and Schneider :( )

Dan Ellis looked great in Nashville too!
I just hate that there doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason behind getting a good goalie. Everything is such a huge risk. Trade for a Calder winner? Lose Rask. Trade 1st+ for a guy with solid numbers? Ends up being the worst goalie in a century. Develop within? Who knows if Reimer is anything real.

At least we didn’t have to give up any significant assets for our mediocre to bad goaltending this time around. Personally, I’m too afraid of more Raycroft/Toskala type trades unless we’re going for someone really established

Leafs don’t have a lot of “good” defencemen, the Leafs have 2 good defencemen (Phaneuf, Gunnar) one young guy who’s improving quickly (Gardiner) and a whole bunch of guys who aren’t much better than 5th or 6th defenders right now. Leafs should be looking to add on the blueline, at least at the top end.

I can only imagine how frustrating this is for Burke. Like you mentioned earlier, it’s not like he hasn’t made an effort to address goaltending, between Gus, Reimer, Allaire, etc. And what if he had gone out instead and signed Bryz to a long-term deal in the offseason, and Bryz shat the bed here like he has in Philly?

I would think that if Burke is going after a new goalie he would wait for the off season. If he wants a veteran playoff goalie then now is the time. And yes I don’t see how Lindback helps in that.
Disagree.
Lindback’s an RFA at the end of the season, so there’s just as much commitment here as there would be adding a pending UFA. If he sucks cut him loose.
The key difference is that Lindback is 24 and hasn’t/won’t got a chance of becoming the starter in Nashville now that they’ve committed to Rinne long-term (and they have a prospect named Jeremy Smith whose numbers in the AHL are pretty decent). If you get a 35 year old either you’ll get what you exepct or he’ll be broken down. Get the 24 year old and you might just grab him before he makes the leap.
Basically, I’d rather give up something to get Lindback than Nabokov.

I think it was Bower Power that pointed out he has a serious medical condition. Adult onset Stills disease IIRC. I am not sure how that would effect a team making a commitment on him.

it’s been almost four years since he was diagnosed, I’d imagine the team trading for him would have to have access to all his medical history to see how he’s been affected so far.

A VERY quick skim of the literature
Suggests to me that he is likely completely in the clear. The research I have found suggests that 34% just have it once, with another 1/3 having it intermittently. The final 1/3 have it contniuous for longer than a year. Considering it is a form of arthritis I have to imagine it has not been active, thus he probably just had it once. Obviously I don’t have nearly enough information so this is mostly conjecture.

I’ve seen a few patient’s with JRA, but all of them have been children. For the record, though, the vast majority were able to lead active, normal lives. If you’re going to have a reactive arthritis, JRA/Still’s seems to be one of the more functional types to have…
For sure but there is a difference between “active, normal lives” and “professional athlete”. Still you appear to know more about rheumatology than I do.

Absolutely. Just pointing out (as you did) that most cases of the actual arthritis are relatively acute. I’m definitely no rheumatologist, though.
We need to reach out to other medical professionals and develop a Barilkosphere medical team to answer these types of questions.
I have a bunch of rheumatology lectures in the next couple of days ironically enough. What is your medical professional background out of curiosity?

I do work for The Arthritis Society, so I might be able to help a bit with that too… Still’s does seem to have a relatively high recovery rate, but from the Still’s and JIA situations I’m most familiar with, the flare ups can be quite debilitating. Medication has come a long long way though as well, so that definitely helps in the treatment and recovery
Finally on the Twitter train, @j6events. Follow me, I swear I'll have interesting thoughts soon!

He might be real good. RFA behind Rinne? He might want a trade out.

Ugh Toskala at least put up a season of .930 (in 28 GP granted) before we traded for him… Lindback hasn’t even come close to that in the NHL or AHL

.915 in 22 games last year… too small a sample size.
Not great numbers this year.

How is Ottawa this good?
How is Washington this bad?
Move along. Nothing to see here...

Ottawa: Good goaltending, a defense which is keeping up and pretty darn good seasons from Old Man Alfie, Karlsson and Spezza.
Washington: Teams a mess with bad goaltending. I really don’t know more than that.
So, apparently I can now be followed.. but no stalking. @alsonamedphil
Nothing like going four goals down to motivate you.
And I should say, Vokuon hasn’t be bad, but he’s had really inconsistent runs. His start was great, he’s had long stretches of mediocrity from there.

Still he is .920 average. With that the leafs would be challenging the bruins for the division. Something else has to be wrong on that team.
Their offense can’t get it done.

they are middle of the pack in offense per game at 14th but are 20th in terms of GA per game

Leafs over the season

They never seem to outshoot their competition (and PDO might have finished regressing I hope)
Well, when your captain, franchise player and face of your team is a pouty, whiny bitch, why should anyone have to put in a consistent effort?

Drove 30 miles in the beautiful weather, drove through a rain shower and two beautiful patches of blue sky. The Pacific Northwest is wonderful….
So to clarify
What do we need?
Goaltending. Duh.
Defense? We have 6 good players, that don’t amount to a good defense. Collectively they are probably not as great defensively as we need, but without the offense they provide do we still have the scoring power we are relying on to make any sort of playoff push whatsoever?
Forwards? The mythical first line centre of some sort… and a top 6 power forward who could perhaps also be the first line centre? Then we need defensively responsible, penalty killing forward types?
All in all, I don’t even know where to begin, outside of getting a goalie who knows how close his legs/catch a puck/not play dodgeball in net. I feel like our success (8th place) is an outcome of a weird mix that could be screwed up very easily. I guess that’s why I’m not an NHL GM
SAUCED
Everett, home of the Silvertip! Whatever the hell that is. Dad is from Halifax and came out in ‘72. I’m shocked how well actually the area has taken to hockey. My only concern is that if an NHL team comes in the area, what will happen to both Seattle and Everett’s WHL teams. I’m just grateful that CBC has always been broadcast in this area. 4 PM Saturday is Hockey Night in my house.
4-2 caps…perreault scores, grabbo style.
You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

What about Kipper?
Flames might miss the playoffs again, and I’d so I could see a serious sellfest going on our west this summer. Kiprusoff is getting older, but only has 2 years remaining on his contract and still plays at a high level.
Reimer as backup, or trade Gus for Brent Johnson – straight up.
