It’s been fairly even. The first goal was apparently a really nice shot and not Reimer’s fault (apparently because I didn’t see it), and the second goal was a point shot tipped in front. Reimer’s been pretty good. Game’s been kinda boring.

First of all, Gardiner has a really high ceiling.
But more importantly, you are just thinking ‘RICK NASH’ without taking into account the following:
1) Nash has a HUGOURMUNGOUS cap hit, for a very long time.
2) Nash will not fill any of our primary needs, namely good defensmen, good two way forwards, good defensmen, and goaltending
3) Gardiner is cost controlled for a while and will never ever carry the same cap hit as Nash
4) If Gardiner becomes as good as he could possibly be (i.e. Keith, Weber, Doughty), he will still have a lower cap hit than Nash
5) Nash does not make us a contender. Full stop. I would say that we would still not be as good as Philly, and never mind the top teams in the league
What is Gardiner going to be eventually?
A young puck moving Dman who will be cost controlled for a long time, probably has a solid decade ahead of him, and a ceiling that is very high

As far as cap space, the PPP enforcer pretty much summed it up.
Rick Nash still doesn’t fit our team, now or long term. If we trade a bunch of shitty players? Sure. But for what he would cost, it is not worth it for us to get him.

That money could still be tied up and we could find a way to fit Nash in anyways. The issue is Gardiner provides more value to this team overall and is therefore better for this team moving forward.
If you could find a equation that balanced Age, cap hit and production and gave you a single value, Gardiners would be higher.

Everyone is a little over heated here, but sam is right to point out that goal scorers tend to slow down right around where Nash is aged. It is quite likely he will average 30 goals for the next 2-3 years, then 25 for 2-3, then 20, etc.

I don’t disagree at all about that. That’s why I kinda just threw out 30-40. I’m not claiming he’s going off for 50 a year. I realize that goal scorers slow down and their production declines, but most likely he won’t turn into a scrub in a few years. I think the big problem with Nash is that a lot of people here NASH and they think of the perennial all star power forward we have seen for 8 years. But we should think beyond the sexy name and realize that he is nearing the end of his prime and has a massive contract and we should be wary of it.

Yeah I just checked out his advanced stats for the last 3 years.
He plays 2nd pairing quality of competition (3rd or 4th in CorsiRelQualComp in each of the years).
Was either last or second last in CorsiRel all three years.
This year has a 49% OZone start and a slightly positive zone shift. The other years negative zone start and started in the Ozone more.
That is BAD. He does play a lot of minutes (greater than 22 in all three years), but it seems like he probably shouldn’t play that much.

I still love how we got Scrivens (Owuya?) to sign with us, didn’t have room for him on the Marlies, so hired on of Allaire’s old assistants to be this kids personal goalie coach in Reading.
It was Scrivens and it isn’t quite true. He got one of Allaire’s old assistants (I think he is one of hte coaches at Allaire’s summer goalie camps), who is a full time goalie coach in an NCAA program to spend like 2 weekends a month, or once a week or something, with Scrivens.

In other words, I don’t blame that on the coaches, I blame it on the players. Is it really Ron Wilson’s job to go around 5 minutes before game time and tap them on the knees, pat their backs, ask, “Hey champ, are you fired up for the game?” What would remedy their unreadiness? Gathering in the crease after the national anthem and doing a little team cheer? It’s frustrating that something so simple as not being ready at the drop of the puck is being thrown out there by (at least one of) the players as the reason the Leafs are losing games.

Whatever. I’m not even saying dump Kessel. I’m not even saying dump Phaneuf.
I’m saying, let’s look at who our core is, and dump the rest. Our core is Phaneuf, Kessel, and Gardiner. And they’re not a good enough core to get us to the Cup. No way. So, sell off, and add to it. Because you’re sure as shit not gonna expand on our core through free agency, given Burke’s unwillingness to go for long term salary.
And same with trades – to get any key piece like Carter, another key piece like Gardiner had to be part of the deal. (that’s why we didn’t get him) Forget it.
Burke’s experiment, three years running, is now a proven abject failure. Three years which could have produced Tavares, Taylor Hall and Nugent-Thomkins have produced a middling team, which, with additions, might turn into the next 2000’s Montreal Canadiens.
