That is a fair bit of money for Hemsky considering his year this year.
In all honesty why would Edmonton want to retain him? I would think they would be better suited to try to move him for defensive help. They have 3 great young forwards, 1 good young forward (Gagner) and two vets (Horcroff and Smyth). Is it really necessary to retain Hemsky (they also have Omark and MPS and are likely acquiring Galchenyuk this summer). They need D men and a goalie for the future (I am not convinced on Dubnyk one way or the other).

They’re not wrong. Hemsky is the best/only forward on the roster who can be put on against tough competition and still move the puck in the right direction. At some point, you’ve got to say enough with the tanking and rebuilding, and do your best to retain players like Hemsky when you’re lucky enough to already have them.
Horcoff’s fucking terrible and isn’t Smyth a UFA?

In answer to Leafer on the other thread "when did Gunnar become a top 20 Dman"
He didn’t. It isn’t about how good Gunnar is or how valuable he is around the league. It is how valuable he is to us. Until we have other defensively reliable defenseman we can’t afford to trade Gunnar. We are already having to play Gardiner on our 2nd PK. Without Gunnar he is on the first PK and the second PK is Liles/Aulie or Komi on the off side.
Phaneuf (unfortunately) can’t play both sides for 60 minutes a game and until he can or we acquire another defensively responsible dman we can’t afford to let go of Gunnar.

This reputation rumours are hear say and not sure what to make of them. This would be a good rumour to drop if one was out low bid on the trade and are doing some damage control. Then again, with the ethics that Burke carries himself I would be surprised if he would be gossiping about a players reputation.
I agree that they’re hearsay to me as a fan, but Burke knows a lot of people in the game and maybe he did some digging and decided that there really was something to it.

They’re two totally different games, flip cup is more fun and casual, and anyone can play. My friends and I have been doing an annual beer pong tournament over Christmas break for the last 7 years and this year we had about 30 teams of 2. Weird previous Frattin dicsussion
Sorry I missed the chat, but why would anyone ignore the fact that he came out of college, and thus… is older entering the NHL…. and therefore, also likely has a different development curve than an OHL player?
Also, why would anyone ignore the fact that he has precisely 1/2 season of professional hockey under his belt? Is he supposed to come in and immediately, his first games outside college, score at his full rate?
This shit is nuts. People running the PPG on his first 37 games with the Leafs – also his first outside college – and then COMPARING it and saying, “3rd line.”
It’s just the worst sort of context-free stats hackery.
How about this. The Leafs have another player who broke in at 24 years of age. Only scored at a .125 GPG rate. Versus Frattin, age 24, scoring at .135 GPG.
And this other kid had never scored more than 17 goals, anywhere, in any minor league season. Where as Frattin got 36 in 44 games at UND.
The other kid? Grabovski.
Or Clarke MacArthur, age 23, with the sabres. Only 8 goals in 37 games. He’d only ever scored 30 and 35 in his age 19 and 20 WHL seasons.
Seriously, I GET that he’s older. But we hear weird shit on here about how a player’s scoring “peaks” at age 25 or 26 or 27. And that’s treated as though he then falls over dead. But the last time someone posted the chart up here, it showed a decline from about .45 PPG to about .40. In other words, averaged league-wide, a decline from their peak of about 10%. With – I would very much suspect – an improvement in defensive play.
But this seems to have become… He’s 24… old for a rookie… likely to peak now or right away…. Therefore 3rd line potential at best.
This is just talking out one’s ass, it’s not about development and context and skill. It’s just ignorant “I don’t like someone” so they’re 3rd line.
FFS people, I don’t know whether he’d end up as a 15 or 25 or more goal man. But 3rd line? Saying he’s a Joey Crabb? He had TWICE as many goals in his final NCAA season as Crabb. Crabb never scored more than 18 goals in any season, ever, until he was age 26-27 in the AHL!
Or people thinking n Mueller is a prospect, when he’s 6 months younger than Frattin, and has 12 goals in the AHL… in 51 games. After 14 all of last year. when Frattin has 12 in 21 already.
He’s not the second coming, he’s not Rick Nash, but he could easily be in the same league and level as a Kulemin or MacArthur. Which ain’t that bad.

I think he is. Last summer all I heard about was how awesome Aulie was and how he was going to be the first pairing LD while Gunnar would have to fight ot make the team. I feel it is the same for Frattin now. People talk about him like he is guaranteed to turn into a 20-30 goal power forward when I doubt he cracks 20 goals twice in his career.

Anybody thought Aulie was gonna be a 1st pairing LD and Gunnar would have to fight. By the end of last season Gunnar was playing solid minutes and Aulie was only paired with Phaneuf for familiarity and for sheltering.
by LeftNutForAStarCenter on Feb 24, 2012 9:41 PM EST up reply actions
I am not sold on either camp with Frattin, but he’s not Joey Crabb at best (and I don’t know if anyone seriously said this). Joey Crabb is a solid 4th liner who can play 3rd line if necessary… I would say the skeptics on Frattin say his ceiling is a good third liner.
Flugenweb, space code, twit zone, ass mode, check ze tweets.
As one of the sceptics (which isn't entirely accurate for me)
I believe that his “ceiling” could be a 2nd liner but he is unlikely to reach it. I think he has a pretty solid chance of being a third liner. I actually like him and think he will turn into a solid 3rd liner. What annoys me is that people think (a) he is awesome and will turn into some incredible power forward and (b) over rate his value ot this team. Every organization has a bunch of guys like him.
I don’t see him as a top prospect so much as a guy that is much closer to being NHL ready. I think a lot of other guys in our system can end up a lot better but are much further away (and much less likely to make it).

My new goal: To get the nickname Hebrew Hammer for Mike Brown to take off.
I said he’s a slight upgrade on Joey Crabb, and I’m serious about that. I would be surprised if Frattin ever played more than a bottom 6 role (unless, like Stalberg or Bozak, he’s paired with very good players who can boost his numbers).

Ok ok. You got me. He’s Bobby Butler. From here on out, whenever we see a college player we don’t like, he’s Bobby Butler. Even though his defence is better, he hits harder, and he scores more often, he’s Bobby Butler.
All I’m saying is, can we look at a RANGE of possible results for a player we’ve only see have 37 professional games? Sure, he could be a Butler. Also, he might be a (good) Kulie.
Because there’s a range of evidence. I just get irritated by pronouncements that he’s Joey Crabb, a 3rd liner, blah blah blah. It’s nonsense.
As for “over-hyped,” people need to stick that shit back on the shelf. There has been precisely NO hyping of Frattin by the Leafs or the media that I’ve read. And very few of us even bothering with the guy after he was sent down.

I have seen a tonne of hyping of him. Specifically on here people way over hyped him in that top 25 under 25, people constantly say we should call him up, and people act like he was so incredible on teh team.
Elsewhere, last spring all you saw in comment sections around the intertubes was how he would be awesome this year and a 20 goal scorer as a rookie.
Anyway I am just tired of people acting like he is this huge piece and that it would be blasphemy to consider trading him.

Also rookie matt read is 25, 1 year older then frattin, great line mates and probably has not peaked in scoring. I think Frattin should be better but maybe this is won’t be the case

Yes, it’s true that the average development curve is not a perfect predictor of future NHL success. Some guys break the mould. But generally speaking, guys who aren’t playing a prominent role in the NHL by their mid-20s are never going to play one.
This data is for CHL players, not NCAA players, but Tyler Dellow has shown that players who score greater than 0.5 games in the NHL tend to have established themselves by their early 20s:
http://www.mc79hockey.com/?p=4220
Other data on player development curves confirms this – players for a wide range of NHL equivalencies tend to peak by their mid-20s and players who begin their careers later on tend to do worse.
When people point this kind of information out, we’re not saying “See, the data says Matt Frattin has a zero percent chance of ever being a top 6 forward!” what we’re saying is “The odds of Matt Frattin being a career 3rd/4th liner are significantly higher than the odds that he’ll score a lot of goals.”

Dude. How does a CHL curve answer the bell for the NCAA players? My point is that they aren’t the same system.
So the evidence you use to support your “generally speaking” statement precisely EXCLUDES players of the type being discussed.
See, with your theory, and what you call “generally speaking,” there can be NO SUCH THING as a player who can complete their NCAA career, and be above 0.5 ppg – because you’re going to be above age 20.
You need to broaden the range of the development curves you’re looking at. That’s all.

Errrrrr… worse league how?
For young players it’s significantly harder to score in the NCAA than the OHL.
Age NCAA NHLe
18… 0.42
19… 0.41
20… 0.60 (probably SSS)
Age OHL NHLe
18… 0.34
19… 0.21
20… 0.16

So, one goal per game from a 19 year old is worth twice in the NCAA as it is in the OHL. Scrub league indeed.

NCAA is 18-23 year olds
CHL is 16-20 year olds
Pretty evident which is the tougher league to score in.

I’m not sure it’s a “worse league”. If it’s so bad why is it so hard to score?

Good NCAA seasons:
Heatley age 19 (rookie) 38GP 28G 28A 56Pts (1.47ppg)
Kessel age age 18 (rookie) 39GP 18G 33A 51Pts (1.31ppg)
Not great:
Frattin age 23 (senior) 44GP 36G 24A 60Pts (1.36ppg)
So, Frattin was basically dominant when four years older than good prospects. He’ll never get that luxury in the NHL.

One big issue I have with this is that there’s almost no research done on the number of games it takes for players to peak. Most big scorers come from the CHL and enter the NHL around the same age, and I would assume most play a similar number of games before peaking. I’d be very interested in seeing how GP correlates for players who enter the league older or suffer from injuries early in their careers.
Pension Plan Puppets
I hope YouTube comes down to film this.
Grabovski had a fucked up development curve. No one is trying to say it is impossible that Frattin turns into a top 6 player. Just that it is not very likely.
If he was better at hockey he would have joined the NHL earlier. He didn’t dominate the NCAA (score goals like that) until he was 23. If he had scored like that at 18-20 it would have been (a) more impressive and (b) he would have likely made it to the NHL the next year.
Also who said he was Joey Crabb?
As well. Forget how much he scored. Here is a list of forwards who entered the league at 23-24 (and played at least 20 GP) over the first few years of the lockout (we have some time to see how they turned out).
Petr Prucha
Colby Armstrong
R.J. Umberger
Rene Bourque
Michel Ouellet
Fabian Brunnstrom
John Mitchell
Ryan Craig
Grant Stevenson
Torrey Mitchell
Jim Slater
Brandon Bochenski
Ryan Jones
Patrick Thoresen
Chad LaRose
Alexandre Burrows
Darroll Powe
Ryan Shannon
Cody McLeod
Matt Moulson
Paul Szczechura
Ryan Carter
Byron Bitz
Peter Olvecky
Derek Boogaard
David Jones
Joel Lundqvist
Denis Tolpeko
Brian McGrattan
Drew Miller
Yan Stastny
Brad Staubitz
John Zeiler
Tanner Glass
D.J. King
Andre Deveaux
Ben Ondrus
There are a couple good top 6ers there (Umberger and Bourque pop out to me) and some solid NHLers (Army, T Mitchell, D Jones, etc). But for the most part it is a bad list. The fact that he didn’t make the NHL until he was 23 is a bad sign for his development. Some forwards do turn out to be good players who enter the league that late, but not many.

Gonna call it as I see it
You’re just manipulating the stats to reach your conclusion, and frankly, it just pisses me off. Why? Because it’s deliberately manipulating data to try and reach a conclusion you already had.
1. See, you started by deliberately choosing to pick just 4 seasons evidence. Four. When trying to find a set of useful data to determine a player’s development curve? WTF is that?
2. Then, you’ve cut it to guys who were 23-24 in their rookie year. So, anyone 24-25, or 22-23, is out. why not 23 and up, for starters? Whatever.
3. Then, you cut it so if they played less than 20 games in their rookie year, they’re out. At which point, it’s clear that you’re completely lost when it comes to the original idea. Which is…. whether or not an older player starting out can make it. So a guy who starts late but plays even fewer games than Frattin, but has a great career, is out? That’s absurd. You’d only7 make that assumption if you were trying top short the list.
4. Oh. Plus, all defencemen are out.
In short, you made a series of decisions that amounted to playing “stats hack” – you added filters to make your point. Cool.
So how’s about I open it up. To guys who came into the NHL late, maybe played even less than Frattin in their rookie year, and who did so in the slightly broader past. Who would get added?
Well, Grabovski, for starters. Plus:
Daniel Alfredsson
Martin St Louis
Ryan Malone
Pavel Datsyuk
Tomas Holmstrom
Brian Gionta
Kristian Huselius
Steve Rucchin
Erik Cole
Dallas Drake
Michael Ryder
Viktor Stalberg
Tyler Bozak
PJ Parenteau
Ryan Clowe
Dustin Penner
Ales Kotalik
Andy McDonald
David Desharnais
Johan Franzen
Valeri Kamensky
Jeff Halpern
Matt Read
Sergei Berezin
And maybe….. maybe…. if he hadn’t been suspended and all…. Frattin’s curve would have put him in with the 22 year old rookies….. Which would have oncluded a couple of people. Like:
Selanne, Zhamnov, Vanek, Hedjuk, Zetterberg, Oshie, Kulemin, Bondra, Hagman, Pavelkski, Koivu, Backes, etc.
So what we see is that there ARE development curves that come in later than the standard one. From European players, most obviously. Who seem…. oddly enough…. to again and again come in later, and smoke the NHL.
Because what Burke is after with all this is to get guys OUTSIDE the usual path. So he doesn’t have to burn top-line assets to pick up talent. Which – as the list above shows – is what every other team does, and NOW AND THEN SUCCEEDS at. What we WANT is to find one player, even just ONE, who falls off the “usual” development curve.
But not us. We don’t want that. We’d rather jack-off to bad stats and waste time trying to make our preconceptions look objective.
Sorry kids. We’re not 7 years old, and tarting up our prejudices with terms like “exceptions” and “general rules” looks pretty dumb second-rate when up against an NHL GM like Burke, who is TARGETTING this sort of group.
In sum, whatever Frattin turns out to be…. your list ain’t it.

I chose a random 4 years because I didn’t want a huge number of players. I wanted a decent group to compare too.
I didn’t include 22 because that was younger than him.
I said greater than 20 GP not less.
I compared him to forwards because he is, guess what, a forward.
Finally from that group, how many players entered the league at that age in that time? A ton. That is a small group of good players in what were mostly bad players.
For the last time, no one has said it is not possible that there are different development curves. Just that those are exceptions to the rule. It is more likely to follow the rule than to be an exception. Why is this so hard for you to understand.

I know you chose filters like 20 games. But it’s not a sensible filter. We want to know if players this age can become useful NHL’ers. That’s the purpose. So the exact # of games they played in their rookie year is actually not relevant. See, they might start late, have a lousy first year, and then be great. If so, we want to know that. This isn’t a salary calculation we’re making, and looking for his precise peers - it’s a development curve.
So just on the years you were looking at, this arbitrary filter cuts out Grabovski, Penner, Peverly, Parenteau.

And all I’m saying is that 2 or 3 Top 6 forwards enter the league, every year, who are 23 or older. Which means there are 20-30 in the league right now. Which is significant. That’s 4 or 5 entire teams of Top 6 players.
And in regards to Frattin, if he hadn’t blown up for off-ice reasons, he might very well have seen his first NHL games at age 22, which people would have seen as much more supportive of his chances – even though it’s a bit arbitrary.
Anyhoo…. as always, these debates on a player’s potential tend not to be resolved very quickly, and usually not to anyone’s satisfaction anyway.

Lupol-Connelly-Kessel
McCarth-Grabo-Lombardi
Kule-Bozak-Brown
Hamilton-Stekel-Army
1. Connelly was brought in to feed Kessel…Connelly’s pt per game with Kessel are pretty good (look at first 2 months of season)
2. Kule’s lack of output but solid defensive play = 3rd line while Lombardi with Grabo and McCarth may be one of the fastest lines in hockey
3. Brown deserves more minutes, his checking and grinding assets are lost on a 7 min 4th line role
4. Army’s pour play (mostly due to injury rust) means…4th line till he shows his footspeed will improve. Hamilton deserves a shot after an AHL allstar apearance and 21 goals as a large frame 6’-3" 230 player

why do you think Hamilton is a better defensive option than Frattin? Lombardi is one of the Leafs better defensive players, and Kulemin is far superior to him in a scoring roll
Resident Internet Tough Guy
by JaredFromLondon on Feb 24, 2012 6:23 PM EST up reply actions
Lombardi’s speed and the Leafs current “speedy” makeup shoudl be utilized in an offensive role…ie. top 6. Frattin is another top 6 type player with speed and hands…I simply feel if a callup is to be made, it should be a 4th liner with smarts, foot speed and SIZE…Hamilton fits that criteria and he should be rewarded for his AHL performance this season…which would also justify the Marlies coaching staffs work.
by killerninetythree on Feb 24, 2012 6:26 PM EST up reply actions
Lombardi is horrid offensively, he has been all year
stop saying SIZE because it doesn’t mean a goddamned thing in relation to the Leafs success in a “bottom 6 roll”
Hamitons AHL performance is ok, but nothing special, Zigomanis is outscoring him, Hamilton isnt even at a PPG pace, the only reason Crabb got the call was because he was scoring at an insane rate down there

by JaredFromLondon on Feb 24, 2012 6:29 PM EST up reply actions
hey…if you are of the opinion the Leafs don’t need size then i believe you are in the minority. I look at every successful NHL team this year and their bottom 6 is full of big rugged players who bang. Crabb should be sent down…exact reason why the current lineup is not working…bring in the offensive guy. I use Hamilton as an example because he is big…Ill take Zigo if he will bang and outmuscle a guy in the corner.
by killerninetythree on Feb 24, 2012 6:34 PM EST up reply actions
they need size in the top line department, they need guys like Mats Sundin or Rick Nash who can dominate possession in the offensive zone so they arn’t totally reliant on a rush game, they DO NOT need size in the checking roll as they have plenty there

ok forget Hamilton and forget Size…yes, the callup should be a 4th liner who plays defensive or at least can add size to our small lineup…Frattin, Colbourne, Kadri is not the player show should be called up imo nor should a Crabb be called up based on his goal scoring prowess.

Crabb is actually also good defensively and solid on the PK…
Anyway the whole argument is moot because Burke has moved away from the top 6 bottom 6 model. He even said so in an interview earlier in the season and has made it clear by the make up of the team.
A lot of analysts have been pointing out that almost every team goes with a “power vs power” model now and the “elite checker” (think Pahlson in his prime, Draper, etc) is almost gone from the game. Besides a few examples (Helm, Malholtra) they don’t exist.
The Leafs have been rolling the Grabovski line against tough competition and they have done damn well at it. Leave Kule with him for that exact reason. What that ideally does is take some pressure off of the Kessel line and leaves our third line some pretty easy minutes. Ideally we turn that into a sheltered scoring line.

Why do we need size?
Also we have plenty of size in our bottom 6. Steckel is huge (not actually that physical) and Brown (while short) plays big and very physical. Looks like Crabb will be the 3rd guy on that line. I’m good. We don’t need more poor hockey players.

the premise of my original post was my ideal lineup structure with our current organizational roster with a top 6 bottom 6 approach which injects more defensive roles in the bottom six…ie. dont call up a Kadri call up a guy who will play on the 4th line to get defensive balance with our other guys.
by killerninetythree on Feb 24, 2012 6:46 PM EST up reply actions
Okay, so you want more defense in the bottom 6. I can understand that. Why then did you include Hamilton who doesn’t have any known defensive accumen. If you are going to call up a player for being good on the PK call up Scott or something.
As well Lombardi is one of our better defensive players so he should probably be down there.
Brown is also atrocious offensively so he should not be leaving the 4th line.
Finally why did you ditch Crabb? He is good defensively and on the PK…

Brown needs to see more ice (do you not agree?)…3rd line = more ice
ok keep Crabb, no call up…Crabb-Stek-Army fourth line…but IMO the roster is stale…need new blood…ie 4th line callup from the Marlies…thoughts are, reward Hamilton…make the Marlies players/staff feel good. No loss on the big club if he underperforms cus 4th line hardly plays as it is.
Pair Lombardi up with Grabo and McCarth…I like the potential chemistry…and need defensive responsibility in top 6 too.

I agree with Brown’s 4th line clasification but my line combo and “Marlie with size” call-up suggestion was made on a “needed now” premise for the forward units. IMO Brown’s enthusiasm and adding the size element (as in a guy who will bang the opposition for 5 min on the 4th line) is the tone the team needs to set right now to break the streak. 6min 5sec of ice last night for arguably the best leaf forward on the ice…Wilson at his best.

simply feel McCarth, Grabbo and Lombardi have similar skating ability…Lombardi is fairly defensively concious (similar to what Kulemin brought to the line)…Kule needs to be dropped from the line and put into a defensive checking role because he is snakebit and not coming out of it this season.

Also
Liles went for a shitty, shitty 2nd. It was the current cup winners second, so a fair assumption is that it will be low again.

Kings have re-signed Willie Mitchell to multi-year deal [2 Years, $7 Million, $3.5AV]
Both Schenn and Komi are longer in term and cap.

0.31 GPG 0.69 PPG
Tyler Bozak

Same point pace. Both signed this summer. One for a billion dollars forever, one for 1.5 million and is younger. Heheheh
Also for fun:
Grabovski
55 GP 18 G 40 pts
0.33 GPG 0.73 PPG
He is better than Richards on both counts…

Nash is this year’s Richards. We’re not gonna get him, and he’s not worth the cost.
