Leafs wake up in 10th place as deadline looms
With the Washington Capitals trouncing the Habs last night, the Leafs fall back into 10th place in the Eastern Conference. You'd have to think that another loss tonight would have an impact on what the Leafs do at the trade deadline. You'll hear a lot of "this game is huge" from here on out, but this one may have additional lasting impact for certain players.

Yeah I could deal with being stuck with a 35+ contract for another year if it meant offloading those boat anchors

I still wouldn’t do it because of his 35+ contract. Only way I’d do it would be if a significant young player or Edmonton’s 1st round pick was coming back with Khabibulin, and even Tambellini can’t be that dumb.

CBA says:
For each League Year, “Actual Club Salary” for each Club shall be
calculated as the sum of the following amounts
(iv) All Player Salary and Bonuses earned in a League Year by a Player
who is in the second or later year of a multi-year SPC which was
signed when the Player was age 35 or older (as of June 30 prior to
the League Year in which the SPC is to be effective), regardless of
whether, or where, the Player is playing, except to the extent the
Player is playing under his SPC in the minor leagues, in which
case only the Player Salary and Bonuses in excess of $100,000
shall count towards the calculation of Actual Club Salary;
Bonuses don’t count if the player is in the minors, but the regular salary still does, and if the player is anywhere but the minors, everything including bonuses counts.

What is “worse” a 35+ Khabi contract for 2 years or a NMC Komi contract for 3 years? I think I prefer Khabi’s.
You can put Komisarek in the press box or play him 10 minutes a night on the 3rd, whereas if the Leafs trade for Khabi it’s because they intend on actually playing him. I’d rather pay Komisarek $4.5 million to sit in the press box than pay Khabibulin $3.75 million to lose us hockey games in net.

Breaks my heart but the Leafs will miss the playoffs this year.
Even if they pull off a few wins in a row, the pattern suggests they’ll break down for a few games thereafter and extrapolating that pattern over the next 20 games doesn’t bode well for a playoff spot.
I would really like to see them get a good young centerman in the draft.

They are a very frustrating team no doubt. Best thing that will happen to them is getting past this deadline. Players say they don’t listen to the rumours but every player has been traded somewhere for someone by fans or media and BB is in on every deal. They have the talent to win but do they have the heart down the stretch?

Its almost like over a full seasons there are ups and downs… but that cant be right…
Also to the whole we are a disappointment because the Sens are higher? We are higher than the Sabres and Lightning who were expected to be higher teams than us. And if we win tonight we’ll be ahead of the Capitals who were potentially going to finish 1st in the East again. Doesn’t that mean we’d be over achieving?

And IIRC thats exactly where we ranked by Fenwick Close score.
We all know what the deficencies are.
And we still only sit 1 point back from 8th, and we have games in hand on the Jets (who are 3rd by division rank).
After a brutal stretch, we are still firmly in the race.

Someone didn’t like being called dirtbags. Although I did like Feschuk pointing out that the Leafs’ PK in 2012 represents a small sample size. I don’t think it’s intellectually honest to dismiss the fact that making chicken salad out of chicken shit the first few years isn’t easy or that the teams they chose to highlight good coaching changes were better teams to begin with.

So... what's up with Steckel?
Up to 9 games ago, he was a total -1.
In the last 9 games, he’s gone -8.
In the previous 25 games, he’d had only one minus game.
Also, his minutes are down, from early in the year he’s fallen from 15 to 13 to 11, and through this stretch, down to 9 and 8 and last game, under 6:00.

I’ve passed a baseline test when I knew I was concussed, its not all that hard when your only symptoms are feeling groggy.
The issue with concussions is even when you’re brain is healed you can still be “not right”. This is because with concussions you can damage the brain to the point of breaking the neuron pathways. When you are recovering you now have to rebuild those pathways. This can be especially true for things like reflexes where a new neural pathway can slow your reaction considerably.

Leafs have been playing from behind much more frequently, and you don’t play your 4th line grinders very often when you want to score a goal or two to tie the game. Steckel is much more useful to send out to protect a lead than to try and get it back.

Schedule Strength
So I added up the records of the opponents of the four teams in the race to get an idea of who has the toughest and easiest schedules.
Winnipeg, 67pts, 19GR, 567-441-144, equivalent of a 91 point team
Florida, 66pts, 23GR, 660-566-176, equivalent of an 87.5 point team
Washington, 65pts, 21GR, 637-492-146, equivalent of a 91.3 point team
Toronto, 65pts, 21GR, 629-490-150, equivalent of a 91 point team
Not only does Florida have the most games left they have by far the easiest schedule. Anything can happen, but Florida definitely has a clear advantage to get a playoff spot. It’s a toss up among Winnipeg, Washington and Toronto with who as the edge for the other playoff spot. Winnipeg has the 2 point edge in points in the bank but the 2 fewer games remaining pretty much cancels that out and each of the teams have fairly equal strength of schedule.

If we go by points percentage, which I think is the fairest way of determining things, the Leafs are still tied for 8th and Winnipeg is still in 10th. Washington does hold the first tie-breaker over the Leafs right now though, so if it comes down to those two for 8th then the Leafs can’t afford a tie – we have to finish with more points than Washington.

Okay...
So Gomez had 578 pts in 706 games before the trade = 0.82 ppg and Rick Nash has 530 pts in 653 games before a trade = 0.81 ppg. Why is Nash’s contract so much better and not a risk to turn into a Gomez exactly?
by scott tubbesing on Feb 25, 2012 4:25 PM EST up reply actions
1) Nash is younger
2) Nash is not known for his points but for his goal scoring ability. Check out the comparison there.
3) Nash has performed as he has by himself. Gomez was often carried by team mates.
4) Even at the time everyone knew that Gomez contract was horrible. People say Nash’ is bad. There is a difference.

I don’t really believe they are on equal footing but when you run the numbers their ppg are identical. I know I’m in the minority but I value assists as highly as goals. Either way you are creating a goal for your team. Everyone said Marc Savard was an Ilya Kovalchuk creation yet he had identical numbers with and without him. No one can predict exactly what will happen in the future with Nash, and it wasn’t a certainty that Gomez would fall off a cliff like he did in MTL.
by scott tubbesing on Feb 25, 2012 4:57 PM EST up reply actions
you statistically cannot equate an assist to a goal because of the fact that up to 2 assists can be handed out at every goal while only 1 goal can be handed out.
s •
My biggest problem
Is the automatic assist if you touched the puck. I know it would add a lot of score keeper’s bias but I would like to see assists awarded for actually contributing to the play (also than guys who are screening/creating havoc in front of the net/make a big hit for a take-away could get an assist).

No they couldn’t. His 1-way contract is too large for the ECHL’s weekly salary cap.

Had no idea they had a cap too. Interesting. Looks like Orr is buried as far as he can go then.

What is the salary cap in the ECHL?Colton Orr makes $5,405 a day; $37,835 a week; 3 times the ECHL salary cap.
The weekly salary cap for 2011-12 is $12,400 and the weekly salary floor is $8,700.
The First Certified Grabbo Lover
So if they carry a 20 man roster
That is roughly $500/week per player. For a 30 week season they make about 15 000/season? I guess they all have other jobs.

That’s what I figured, Matt Stanisz (was at Leafs camp) was offered that deal to go to Reading this year… he took scholarship to play hockey at Carleton instead though. I wasn’t sure if it was the stuts-quo though or something they offered to younger guys playing away from home.

What is the NHL/AHL affiliate payment?
The NHL/AHL affiliate payment for 2011-12 is $525 per week. Any affiliate amount other than $525 per week agreed upon with any NHL/AHL club will be considered a salary cap violation. This includes excess payments for equipment, travel, etc.
Does this mean that players who get demoted to the ECHL take a pay cut? Rynnas for example made 67 500 this year (not to mention the 90 grand in signing bonus).

Clitsome
I don’t get exactly why CBJ would waive this guy, I know nothing about him but when they have Brett Lebda in the lineup I find it weird.
Clitsome has averaged 17 mins per game, and is only a -6 on a horrible CBJ team (Methot -11; Nikitin -14; Moore -18; Wisniewski -19; Tyutin -25)… and he has 14 points. I don’t watch Columbus so I haven’t seen him play, so what’s the deal?

Well we already have an “extra” Dman (Phaneuf, Gunnar, Liles, Franson, Gardiner, Schenn, Komisarek = 7), and can always call up Aulie or Holzer.. I don’t think Clitsome would be a big upgrade on any of these guys.
Flugenweb, space code, twit zone, ass mode, check ze tweets.
Well let’s face it, Aulie isn’t good enough and I don’t think Holzer is ready yet. If we don’t move one of our D-men, there wouldn’t be a point in claiming him. Won’t happen anyways, but I like the guy, and his name.

a huge game tonight…probably one of the most important this season…how will the buds come out and play? I’m going to say they beat the Caps tonight in regulation…likely a 4-2 final…looking for Kessel and Lupul to do well….Go Leafs Go!!!!
well it was 4-2...
but not for our Leafs…wonder if burke is going to do a harold ballard and sell on impulse….

that caps lineup doesnt scream contender to me. Which is why im wondering why their coaches have gotten so much grief this year
I was just thinking the same thing. Their D in particular.
Where my heart belongs - GO LEAFS GO!
I started a blog.
Add Backstrom back in and don't do such ridiculous lines
Ovi-Backstrom-Johansson
Brouwer-Laich-Semin
Chimera-Perrault-Ward
Eakin-Halpern-Eakins
Plus you have Knuble
That D corps still has 2 of the best offensive D men, plus an apparently good prospect (Orlov), a good up and coming 2-way guy (carlson), and 2 solid defensive guys (apparently) in Schultz and Alzner.
With one of the best goalies in the game behind them (Vokoun) I still think that should look like a contenders roster…

Could very well be. He has been inconsistent this season. Started great for 7-10 games. Was horrible for about 2 months (his save percentage was approaching 0.900 on the season) and since has been bringing it back up to respectability. He was actually above 920 until a few bad games the last 2 weeks.

Wow
AHL-All Star and NHL-scrub Keith Aucoin is playing on Ovi’s other wing? And Matt “I had 25 points once” Hendricks is on tehir second line?
I think the line with this years most succesful players may be Chimera-Perrault-Semin…
Also is there big free agent signing Joel Ward on the fourth line? That team is having a clusterfuck of a season.

Recall Kessel’s wingers and centre a couple years back.
I don’t think that Kessel need to use that as an excuse for lack of production
Phil Kessel with Joey Crabb as one of his primary wingers last season – 64 points in 82 games
Kessel with Lupul this season – 65 points in 61 games

Colby’s last year before he joined the Leafs saw him face middling competition with unimpressive results. Ott plays some of the toughest competition on his team with the 2nd best Corsi REL (the only guy ahead of him plays very weak competition). Ott wins 57% of his faceoffs and has thrown 204 hits this season. He’s not an elite player by any means, but he’d be a better match with Kessel than Bozak is, and I’ll bet you if you switched Bozak and Ott’s linemates they’d put up reasonably similar point totals.
Anyway, I don’t really care whether we trade for Ott or not, but I think he’s better than he appears just by looking at his boxcars stats.

here is a simple quiz for if the Leafs need a forward
A- Is this forward an elite talent who can score against tough competition?
B-Is this forward an very good 2 way, physical guy who can be put out to shut down top offence and will be cheap to attain/keep?
C- Is this forward a young, cheap, promising prospect?
if the answer is no to all of these, we dont need him

Wanna hear something funny?
Gomez brought NYR a better package than Carter brought LA
Scott Gomez + Tom Pyatt (a very meh prospect who turned into a meh 4th liner) + crap
for
Ryan McDonough (Montreal’s top prospect at the time) + Chris Higgins (who at the time looked like at least a second line winger. Had 84 goals in 280 games from 22-25. That is 25 G in 82 GP) + crap
So top prospect + young 2nd line winger
vs
one dimension expensive defender + first.

The Leafs have been actively pursuing a top-six forward for several weeks, and have been very much involved in negotiations for Columbus Blue Jackets superstar Rick Nash.
In order to acquire Nash, though, the Blue Jackets are asking for defenseman Jake Gardiner, center Joe Colborne, right wing Matt Frattin and a first-round pick, a price tag the Leafs’ management brass believes is too high.
