Well if you’re going to get betweeen the goalie and the puck, you have to block it so the goalies doesn’t slide five feet to the side of the net and deflect a shot wide into the net.

but the goals were not scored on poor shots, one was a wrap around, and while it was easily saveable, it is hard to call it a poor shot, and the other was a well places, if not a laser beam, shot that went through the 5 hole from about 15 feet out

True, but I’m just pointing out that there are lots of good things to remember, even in the worst of seasons.
The way I look at it is this: I’ve loved the Leafs for 18-19 years now and I’m going to keep on loving them the rest of my life no matter what. Therefore, even when the overall season is bad, I’m going to think about the good blips as much as I can.

Sorry people but as I try to continue a thread if I started it or not the screen jumps from one comment to another. Then when I get back to where I was it jumps somewhere else and it makes it hard to keep up a topic without losing thoughts. ( No comments needed) How can I correct the problem ?

This team took off with a good enough start that they only had to play .500 hockey to comfortably waltz into a low seed playoff spot. The hot start means expectations have changed. Just because we pegged them as a bubble team at the beginning and they exceeded expectations in the first half of the season, doesn’t mean we should be content to watch them fall back out of the race in spectacular fashion and say “Oh well, they were never that good anyway”.
If they had ended up 9th or 10th this season and had actually fought hard, and not made it just because other teams were better, I think most of us would be ok with that. But the fact that they’ve lost almost every game for a month now despite the rest of the East being just as terrible, and are showing zero motivation to fix things, is why people aren’t about to “calm the fuck down”.

One last thing I’ll say. The Leafs have been in the bottom 10 teams in Fewick Close all fucking year. There aren’t ‘good possession’ or ‘bad possession’ teams, just good ones and bad ones. We don’t have the dominant forward line (Like the Ducks) or the dominant Dpair / goalie (like Nashville) who can overcome a mostly shitty roster.
Hey, why not? We’ve let everyone else back into the playoff race, why not the Sabres?

because building a solid team is SO easy, I mean the Leafs have been competitive several times in the not so distant past and have just very recently been torn down and built up again, the Leafs have slowly improved over the last 2 seasons, and given a trend will probably do so again next year, solid teams are not build in 2 years, especially ones that need to be strip mined or are not lucky enough to land on generational talent.
of course I want a stanley cup, but you have to be realistic about the building process

you can blame management for that…………..but out of the 7 first round picks the Leafs actually ended up drafting from 1998-2006, 6 were significant NHLers, that’s pretty damn good.

When JR hit that shot to kick the Leafs out in 2004, I was in the very same basement I am in now. I began to weep and shoot the tennis ball around the basement with no regard for human life. Now that stick reaches my chest, this basement has been completely renovated, and my TV is twice as big.

Yep! The scholarship includes a lifetime license for ArcGIS as well, which nearly made my head explode when I found out. That is worth a pretty penny every year.

Yeah for sure, going to be spending the next couple of days filling out applications for 4-5 positions…if I got any one of them I’d be on cloud nine. Back in Toronto today and tomorrow to relax for a bit, then back to Lindsay to spend reading week doing more schoolwork/applying for jobs.

yeah Bozak is overextended as a first liner. He’s a fine 3rd liner. But if Kessel had 2 competent scorers he’d have 60 assists. Lupul is good so he just needs one. Connolly isn’t that guy either.

True, can’t say I’m overly surprised either, but I am still impressed that he just picked up where he left off as if he were nothing…didn’t play a single NHL game from 38 to 40 and was like “no sweat”

yeah but he still played hockey so he didn’t lose game shape really. Plus he is just ridiculously talented that never changes with age. He’s still strong as fuck and that’s a big part of his game.

Dude is one of the best hitters in the NHL, you have no case there.
Great fight………….I’d rather the Leafs best defenceman not sit in the penalty box on a regular basis.
Key goal……the guy plays defence thus providing limited opportunities for scoring the big goal, all the guys you mentioned previously are forwards.

i’d start with not making inane statements about our captain killing someone for no reason
then I’d try to get a better coach, maybe a number one goalie who isn’t scared of his own shadow, a youngish mobile shut down defender to play on the 2nd pairing and then try to move some of the bad contracts

- Coach – agreed but no rush as I don’t see that as happening or an immediate solution
- Goalie – I can’t agree more, probably the biggest mistake going into this year was not having a back-up plan
- Shut down defender – good call, wish our ‘shut down’ defensemen on the team could have filled this void
- Bad Contracts – yep and I’m dreaming the same dream
no, not a pacifist, but when a player, i todays NHL goes out there and starts playing to hurt, he usually gets penalized, maybe suspended, possibly ejected from the game, or even worse gets into a fight and breaks his hand off some plugs helmet
this hurts the team, you beat them on the scoreboard, not against the boards
I loved 80s and 90s rough and tumble hockey as much as anyone but it does not work in todays NHL

I didn’t intend unmitigated violence toward another player.
But IMO there are cases where its fine to risk an extra penalty to send a message. It may hurt the team in the short term if they lose the game but they will be better off in the long run for the message it sends to teammates and the opposition.
yes I realize every point counts b\c they are in a dog fight for a spot, BUT my view is they will gain more points over the course of the season as they learn how to respond to battling.
I’m trying to think of a game this year (at least a recent one) where the opposition played a gritty game and the Leafs responded and sent the team a message. To me that translates directly into a playoff failure if you cannot respond.
Phaneuf always responds physically, he punishes people along the boards, makes people who come across the line with their head down pay and he protects his team, still don’t see how your argument applies to him being a bad captain unless you think taking bad penalties makes him a good captain

I totally feel they have done good things, a lot of good things.
There are parts of their game that are bothering, quite a bit lately. There are few selected players that I cringe when I watch them.
Overall I have a positive outlook on this team but my insides burn after watching this last month.
Fair enough, but the whole peaks and valleys thing is kind of characteristic of a young team. Since they’ve bottomed out they’ve gotten better and better and even if they don’t make the playoffs this year, I expect that trend to continue next year.

I don't actually think that Wilson is a bad coach
But I feel like a coaching change might be necessary.
Wilson’s style of hockey works well when you have a saviour goalie. It’s almost like Pat Quinn hockey in a way. It’s offense first. A good goalie is essential. A shitty goalie destroys the Wilson style. He’s never had a goalie here. I also believe Wilson style tends to burn you in the playoffs when scoring becomes more difficult. I think firing him is essential.
