I’m serious. You can hit the puck below your shoulder except for goals, then it’s the crossbar. There is no safety reason for that. A high stick is still a high stick. And the replay would be easier using the shoulder instead of having to find a mythical camera angle that lines up with the crossbar.

Well here’s how I see it, If you’re trying to score it, you’re gonna be really whacking at it. So if say Zdeno Chara goes for a swat under the shoulders, he could still whack someone pretty damn hard in the face who’s shorter. Crossbar seems about right

Somethings wrong if they’re “dominating” the other team and getting destroyed. Other teams are the ones getting “dominated” by the Leafs, but they’re not the ones down 3-1 or 4-0 or whatever the scores have been like recently.

Burke doesn’t really show an aversion to them. He probably feels confident with them since he drafted Perry and Getzlaf. By no means am I comparing them to those players, just saying Burke probably feels he can get someone good there.

Not really. Kessel, Lupul, Bozak, Kadri, Frattin, Colborne, Gardiner, Phaneuf, Gunnarsson, I’d feel pretty good about the team.

There’d actually be spots for Kadri, Colborne and Ashton when he’s ready plus 2 or 3 more 1st rounders to build with. Plus a big FA signing or RFA signing. Or could use those 1st round picks to acquire someone at the draft.

I guess, but it’s probably a good argument that you should be offersheeting players regardless of whether or not you have spare picks. I’d rather keep the scoring depth of MacArthur, Grabovski, and just burn four 20+ picks for top end talent.

You have no idea what GMs think. You have no idea if the Kessel deal made an impact on the RFA market, because the RFA market was limited to being with. Hell, that’s ignoring the fact that Kessel was acquired via a trade, not via an offer sheet.
You have absolutely no standing with which to say that NHL General Managers are “scared” of offersheeting players because of the Phil Kessel deal.

Technically: Onside.
A player is on-side when either of his skates are in contact with, or on his own side of the line, at the instant the puck completely crosses the leadingedge of the blueline regardless of the position of his stick. However, a player actually controlling the puck who shall cross the line ahead of the puck shall not be considered "off-side," provided he had possession and control of the puck prior to his skates crossing the blue line.

Not much of a shot to play from the initial angle of the pass. To be honest, I’m not a fan of Reimer’s skills/potential. What attributes do you like about him? Because I don’t understand the love for him
by TheFlyingDutchman on Feb 28, 2012 9:14 PM EST up reply actions
Strengths: Positional play. Ability to take away the bottom of the net while conserving energy. Does a good job tracking the puck and staying with the play.
Weaknesses: A little weaker up top. Tends to commit to a tight butterfly when he should be stretching to focus on lateral movement. If PK SVP is actually a “skill,” his needs work – I’m not convinced this is a skill, though. Like Gustavsson, poor application of VHS (which I think is a product of Allaire, as he has only recently allowed his goaltenders to use VHS, typically preferring a butterfly even when up against the post). Poor defensive support needs to be mentioned.

by Nigel Cadbury on Feb 28, 2012 9:42 PM EST up reply actions
Positional play is good, not so sure about tracking the puck, as he tends to lose it more then any other goalie I’ve seen at the NHL level. I think his vision and anticipation are poor, and I know it’s been said a million times, but his glove is certainly slow, even if it isn’t something he relies on.
Defense should definitely shoulder the blame, but his lateral movement doesn’t do him any favors in trying to recover on broken plays/defensive lapses and turnovers.
by TheFlyingDutchman on Feb 28, 2012 9:36 PM EST up reply actions
His glove isn’t “slow”, it’s a product of decisionmaking and the tendency towards the tight, blocking style butterfly. His first impulse is to pull it in, and he’ll sometimes default to that when it’s not the case. Vision, sadly, is one of those “intangibles” where you could ask 100 people and get 100 different answers, but I think, it’s pretty good.
Not sure there’s a goalie in the league who could’ve gotten over to get solid, high save percentage chance on that second goal. Rinne/Thomas, maybe.
RIP Former-and-forever Leaf Wade Belak
Me on Twitter
Slow was probably a poor choice of words, what I meant is that he’s certainly not a goalie who “flashes the leather” on a regular basis, and considering he gets beat glove side a lot, I see it as a weakness.
I think it all comes down to him being more aggressive, in his positioning, movement and with the glove. I’d like his future a lot more if he could add a more active glove to his arsenal.
by TheFlyingDutchman on Feb 28, 2012 9:50 PM EST up reply actions
Fair enough. You think he’s the answer in net?
by TheFlyingDutchman on Feb 28, 2012 9:58 PM EST up reply actions
So long as the question only demands league average goaltending, yes, I think he has the tools. He’s probably not going to Tim Thomas this team anywhere, though.
That said, right now, I don’t think this team is constructed such that they’re a playoff contender with just league average goaltending.
RIP Former-and-forever Leaf Wade Belak

by Bower Power on Feb 28, 2012 10:01 PM EST up reply actions
That’s for sure, I’m not sure his ceiling is anything more then an average goalie, I feel like that fantastic run last year was more of a Gustavo Chacin type situation. Goaltending is obviously not the same as pitching, but it seems once teams started to see Reimer more, they’ve figured him out and his stats have steadily declined.
The injury may have played a big role in that though, defense probably not as much because it wasn’t dramatically better last year.
by TheFlyingDutchman on Feb 28, 2012 10:17 PM EST up reply actions
Asking too much. Every time I go to a game, I’m reminded how much faster it looks in person than on TV. The only way Reimer gets over there is if he cheats, and if he cheats and a goal goes short side, we’re complaining about that, instead.
RIP Former-and-forever Leaf Wade Belak
Me on Twitter
He’s just sooooo slow post to post though, I feel like he needs to cheat one way or the other if he wants to have a chance at it. You’re right, I was there Saturday and its hard to ask a young guy to make that split second call.
by TheFlyingDutchman on Feb 28, 2012 9:20 PM EST up reply actions
pretty much the only time most goalies make a save going post to post is when the player shoots it at them
Y'all heard about me, you just didn't know it was me
by JaredFromLondon on Feb 28, 2012 9:21 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t just mean on one time plays, in general his lateral movement is subpar. The only thing i think he does really well is his initial angling, and once a play breaks down, he’s instantly in trouble
by TheFlyingDutchman on Feb 28, 2012 9:23 PM EST up reply actions
If a pass goes from the short side to the far side uninterrupted, it’s probably not the goalie’s fault. Even if he does get over, you can’t get your chest behind that puck, so it’s typically a matter of luck whether or not the puck hits your glove/blocker or low leg pad.
Cheating is unacceptable. Short side goals in the NHL are unacceptable.
RIP Former-and-forever Leaf Wade Belak
Me on Twitter
Wouldn’t be the first time he’s cheated and let one in short side. I meant cheating by laying down the paddle, or cutting the pass off
by TheFlyingDutchman on Feb 28, 2012 9:26 PM EST up reply actions
Either way, you guys have shown that wasn’t his fault. I’d just like him to be more aggressive, instead of letting a pass go cross-crease just in front of him
by TheFlyingDutchman on Feb 28, 2012 9:27 PM EST up reply actions
I’d just like him to be more aggressive,
I think, positionally, this makes sense, and is a pretty common frustration. Reimer’s insistence on staying deep even in 1v0 and shootout situations is constantly baffling to me. Whether it’s player or coach, we’ll never know. He doesn’t have much of a chance when it comes to picking off the cross-crease pass, though. I haven’t seen a goalie in the league who can do it really reliably – it usually ends in a weird deflection into the slot.
RIP Former-and-forever Leaf Wade Belak
Me on Twitter
Sometimes that deflection into the slot is better then a tap-in, not that that was the situation tonight. Yeah the only goalies who I’ve seen able to cut those passes off tend to be more unorthodox and aggressive tenders like Thomas, Hasek and to a lesser degree Fleury. Reimer is definitely more conservative and tight in his play.
I just wanted more out of him in that situation tonight, considering it put the boys in a 2-0 hole again so early.
by TheFlyingDutchman on Feb 28, 2012 9:45 PM EST up reply actions
Defensive play put the boys in a 2-0 hole. Schenn’s turnover was brutal, and that cross crease pass neither should’ve happened, nor should it have found such an open player.
RIP Former-and-forever Leaf Wade Belak
Me on Twitter
Laying down the paddle wouldn’t have gotten you across. If you want to get over there at an NHL speed, you’ll be lucky if you can get more than a glove/blocker and one leg pad over. Going paddle down will limit the strength of your push off and the speed/range of your reach.

Uhm, yes. Logically, making the playoffs as an 8th seed and getting steamrolled by the Rangers does not make this a better team. We are not as bad as this losing streak says we are. If we tank it the last stretch and get a top pick we don’t deserve? Well, that is good for this team. We add a top-ranked talent for free without taking a step backwards to get it. Makes fucking sense.

By trading lupul, our end result of the Gardiner trade could have been Beauchemin for Gardiner + a first +whatever else. Sounds damn good to me, not saying Lupul doesn’t sound good either, with how well he has played

I’m never trading 27 year olds top 10 in league scoring for picks sorry.
Picks = chance. Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t. Lupul is a totally fine 1st line winger. I don’t need to be trading Lupul so I can wait 4-5 more years for a pick to develop only to find out he’s Landon Wilson

no, you don’t “do it, simple as that”. You need players like him on this team. You think Phil has the same year he’s having without Lupul there as a 2nd threat on that line?
by Nigel Cadbury on Feb 28, 2012 10:01 PM EST up reply actions
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: Prospects and Draft picks are way overvalued in this league. Why trade your 2nd best goal scorer for someone who isn’t even guaranteed to make the team. No matter how you look at it, the draft is a glorified lottery. Sometimes you get lucky but most of the time you don’t.
by Leafswinthecup on Feb 28, 2012 10:03 PM EST up reply actions
no he doesn’t. He’s had 1 back injury and 1 infection which can happen from any surgery. So no I’m not trading him for unknowns.
Look, Lupul kept getting traded when he was younger. Other than his season in Edmonton he’s always put up good numbers while young and unsettled. He can’t play a lick of defense but not everyone has to. He’s a perfectly good scoring winger.

well on the first goal he didn’t give Schenn a passing option. Had he joined the rush Schenn might have not whiffed on that. Brodeur does this often and that’s why he’s already in the HOF
second goal he should know it’s a pass because that player has had 954 passes to 144 shots in his career on 2-1’s and any good goalie would have read the scouting reports. Patrick Roy does this and that’s why he’s still posting shutouts in the NHL today even at his advanced age.
Third goal he shouldn’t go down on one knee as pointed out by HOF goaltender Greg Millen as it gives up rebounds and forwards aren’t expected to backcheck in today’s NHL. Georges Vezina would never have done this and that’s why he’s still leading the KHL in save percentage even at his advanced age.
Fourth Goal he should have stacked his pads as the stick angle clearly indicated that the puck would not be looped over him. Ken Dryden always knew this and that’s why he’s still the GM of the Leafs.
Fifth goal he should have pokechecked Phaneuf’s face so that he doesn’t get near the crease and the puck never deflects off him. Ron Hextall would have done this and that’s why he’s still the head spokesman for Gatorade.
