Welcome Back Tank Nation

There's nothing left to say, the Leafs have done it again. This is a poorly constructed team, a poorly coached team, and a team with poor players.

Review players from Leaf history, and how they would have fixed the most recent epic fail.

E.g. Luke Richardson would have sent Jack Skille through the boards and into the third row of seats, making it impossible for him to set up the second goal. Or Al Iafrate would have intercepted the original pass from Gudbranson and charged back up ice for a highlight reel goal…

2 games in a row at home against teams your fighting for a playoff spot against from the Southeast division and your down 2-0 before some of the fans get into their seats, if thats not a clear sign of needing to fire your coach who for 4 years has not been able to get the team atleast into the playoffs then burke needs to go

I don’t understand the whole Wilson must be fired tomorrow. Do you people think Scotty Bowman can magically make a 19 game turnaround with this group? Who gives a fuck about Wilson. He’s gone in the offseason. I don’t see a point in having an interim coach. Just wait til you have a guy and then send Wilson to retirement.

Because it shows that somebody cares about accountability and losing.

Because the team is manifestly poorly coached.

Because if the interim coach succeeds down the stretch, we have a promising lead behind the bench for next season.

We joke about Tank Nation, and there’s something to it, but you cannot run a franchise in a way where you put up with losing games and crushing young players’ confidence. 19 more games is 19 too many.

Totally agree with this. We have self-imposed contract caps, self-imposed trade deadlines…it’s just too bad other teams view running an NHL team as if they play a competitive sport.

He’s doing everybody else in the league a favour in the desperate hopes that he’s going to be able to call in favours of his own in the future. But since when was this a league built upon favours? Did the league do Detroit any favours after their many years of “good citizenship”? And now we’re possibly going to have two separate self-imposed trade freezes because our players are under so much pressure they can’t deal with it? Fuck that. Fuck. That.

Oh man, we didn’t get Brad Richards or sacrifice draft picks to sign Ilya Kovalchuk. We didn’t offer sheet that player who got offer sheeted – we only traded the exact value of an offer sheet for our best player under 25. Maaaan, these personal policies are ridiculously constrictive.

That’s pretty selective. The Flyers, Blackhawks, Red Wings and Canucks, to name just four slightly above average teams, have all used cap-circumventing long contracts to either sign UFAs or retain current players and get more value from their cap space.

I could go back and identify the best signings in hockey, but that wouldn’t be honest and isn’t the point.

Let me put it this way: If the league allowed DET, PHI, CHI and VAN to sign players to 10+ year deals, but not the Leafs, wouldn’t you find it unfair and absurd? So why is it better when the Burke unilaterally imposes restrictions on the Leafs to be a good league citizen, despite nobody reciprocating?

It’s not a question of “could Burke have gotten away with it”, it’s a question of “who has really tested Burke’s policy?” Hossa? Luongo? Pronger? None of these players put Burke’s “long tail deal” to the test, and the two that have (Richards, Kovalchuk) weren’t worth breaking the bank for.

In which scenario has Burke failed to display a competitive advantage? In my opinion, none of those cases where the Leafs had a real shot (read: made it to UFA) offered the Leafs a real competitive advantage if Burke had bent his “code of ethics.” Which means that his “code of ethics” is bluster much, much more than it’s detrimental to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

I’ll agree on Vokoun, Nabokov, Theodore, and even a PTO to Emery – goaltending, and attachment to current goaltending, has been a black hole of suck for Brian Burke, yet again, despite adding bonafide prospects to a shallow prospect pond.

Knock off Kovalchuk and Richards (UFA) for reasons mentioned above, we had an offer in on Richards and got turned down without a callback. You’re down to Neal (who would our Goligoski have been?) and Carter.

Regardless, these are players that moved, not players who were missed opportunities due to Burke’s morals.

Burkes Big Mistakes - in no particular order

Lebda
Komi
Armstrong
Not getting someone who has proven to be at least a League average goalie
Orr

Things that might have been mistakes at the time, but few were sure and many thought it might be a good idea:

Not getting a new coach
Trading for Versteeg (yah i know Burtch will say ‘I didnt want to trade Stalberg!’)
Connolly

I know i missed some (but getting Phil Kessel was not one of them)

My big problem is with the first list of mistakes – i can live with the second list because without the power of seeing into the future no one knew for sure what would happen. I just wish he was more proactive at fixing the mistakes he made. He waited too long.

I will say that he has had some pretty bad luck on how things turned out, but being a part of the Leafs organization you really should go into that job knowing that Murphys law will bite you in the ass. Burke took some unnecessary gambles and most of them did not pay off.

Unless he makes some pretty drastic moves between now and July 1st, he probably needs to go. And I like the guy…

by Chemmy on Feb 28, 2012 10:49 PM EST up reply actions

On the opening night of the season when Brian Burke showed up, John Mitchell played 20 minutes of ice time. Our decision not to hold picks and tank led to the unanimous number one player in PPP’s top 25 under 25 – a trade that may only sit at “break even” because of Burke’s inability to pull the plug on shitty goaltending that season, yes, but even with abuse of hindsight, it’s tough to make a compelling argument that the landmark “don’t tank” move was a smarter play, given the complete lack of complementary pieces we had in the system at that time.

But what’s getting to me is the idea that all of this – which I’m pretty sure would’ve been fairly undisputed as of this morning (or 7 hours ago) – should be lit on fire, because the Leafs hits their, what, 9th loss instead of 8th?

Possible headlines for tomorrow: Overperforming bubble team becomes underperforming bubble team. 2nd, 9th overall draft pick on pace for 11th – fans insist they would have been patient enough to tank.

Right, this is an unacceptable result for a season, and, given the failure to add a big piece at the deadline (as usual), Burke’s offseason needs to be impressive, but I’m not sure that today should really be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

The higher the pick, I’d wager the more likelier is to get traded.

Burke is coming up on year four of his tenure. He’s got to get results soon – and by soon, I mean playoffs at the very least in 2012-13, if not a good run in the post-season.

How does a kid who won’t make a meaningful contribution until 2015 help him do that?

You think an 18 year old Brayden Schenn, Kyle Beach, Jordan Schroeder or Brett Connolly is going to be a difference maker for Burke in 2012-13?

Not a chance.

But moving that pick for a player that can help Burke and the Leafs now? That’s where I’d place my bet.

I’ve gotten sick feelings in my stomach immediately after 2 Leafs trades. 1. Rask for Raycroft 2. the Kessel package (though the Kessel package doesn’t bother me as much as it did when it was made)
If he moves that pick it’ll be the 3rd.

Should’ve burned first round picks for bandaids like Paul Gaustad? Or rolled the dice on Josh Harding? Shoved AHL-928 Ben Bishop into the net instead of AHL-955 Gustavsson? Signed Turco?

The Leafs have been playing above their Fenwick% all season. The offensively gifted team has dropped to 2.15 GF/G over this month (2.92 over the season). It absolutely sucks that this happened against soft teams instead of the tough ones that we were probably going to lose anyways, but I don’t think I’ve seen a single move that makes me think “man, if the Leafs did that, we probably could’ve turned this around.”

Shame on Burke for giving Gustavsson the chance to play past 10 games – “saved the season or not”, Burke rolled the dice, got burned, and should be held accountable – but I don’t think there’s much he could’ve done to steer out of the way of the iceberg we’re not only hitting, but that we’ve been saying “we’re probably going to hit” for the past couple months.

How can you keep a coach specifically to avoid winning? Honestly, don’t we owe it to Schenn at the very least to get a few regular season games in under a new system?

I’d still rather be 15th than 19 games of Schenn development. Just a personal opinion. Schenn is going to need 60 games of re-education before he gets good again.

Remember Burke gave up the opportunity to land any 1st round picks yesterday in an effort to make the playoffs. You have to make the most of it.

by scott tubbesing on Feb 28, 2012 10:39 PM EST up reply actions

Last year it was trading players for picks/prospects because he didn’t want the leafs to get kicked out the first round.
This year, however the goal is to make the playoffs but why so the leafs get kicked out in the first round.

I liked the same plan of last year for this year – building a team for the future (ideally prospects and not picks). Not sure where the team is going.

I know exactly what you mean

We essentially feel the same way. The fact that we were both just kids (literally) when the Leafs were last successful is just mind boggling. I don’t think I’ll ever stop caring about this team either, and I swear, the only thing that keeps me going is the thought that eventually they HAVE to win the Cup, right? I just keep telling myself that the drought can’t go on forever, and it’ll feel even sweeter if I stick through this.

I’m telling you though, it’s getting harder and harder, and putting more and more stress on me to keep doing so.

In hindsight, it’s other things too: it’s my dad, who is a big Leafs fan, laughing at me for even caring about this team because they’re so bad. He’s been doing it since 2006, probably out of bitterness of not seeing a Cup win since age 6. 1/4 of the way through this year, I bought him Leafs tickets for Christmas, for March 27th against Carolina, thinking the Leafs would be in a furious playoff push. I thought I’d finally be able to stick it to his pessimistic thoughts about this team, because I really did believe that we were good enough. I guess that won’t happen.

Here’s something else: None of my friends are really hockey fans, but know enough to preach “Leafs suck”, and understand why it’s funny. They all know that I’m a die hard Leafs fan, and they find every opportunity to work in the Leafs suck argument. I thought this finally might be the year that I could stick it to them. I guess I was wrong.

They don’t sound like things that are a big deal, and really, they’re not. But they’re only a couple of the many little things that add up to a lot, all centred around this team sucking for the majority of my life. Other people have pointed out similar things too, and I don’t blame you.

Someone already said it, but I’ll repeat it: For once I just want to be able to love my team without being the laughing stock of the NHL, and everyone pretty much.

Tank Nation

OK so the deal was we would forego the traditional rebuild and target high skill level young players a year or two removed from their draft class, where they would have gone in the top 15 of the first round… I bought in…and after three years, this Leaf team isn’t making any significant progress…
I want to see the Leafs get a Landeskog, or similar via the draft. Never been a tanker, but right now, I am just so done with watching this team do nothing, season after season. The strategy isn’t paying off, and Id like to see a top 3 draft prospect in Blue and White. A real difference maker, even if it takes a season to put it together…
If a top three pick isn’t the answer, someone tell me what is please…

Leafer and CM09, I have the first edition and it explains clearly why the Leafs have been moribound that last 40+ yrs. It is all about appearances. Everything from giving up Doug Jarvis, Steve Sullivan, for nothing because of stupidity or egos of GMs it shows that as long as the Leafs are the only way to see an NHL game in the GTA nothing will really change.

that’s it exactly. He’s so smrt. It’s all about the fans. Because when an NHL player is streaking down the wing at full speed, and in those microseconds of time that he has to think he ponders “hmm the fans will buy tickets anyway” as he releases a shot 10 feet wide and skates back to the bench, fully relaxed.

In all honesty, I would care less about losing if Brian Burke wasn’t constantly telling us how good he thinks this team is and how confident he is in the players and the coach. It’s all a bunch of malarkey and his act is growing mighty thin. If he believes that nonsense he spews that is a shame. If he doesn’t and he is just trying to fool us, that is even more shameful. It’s time Burke starts admitting his rebuild hasn’t gone as planned and start making changes because this team is a long way from being competitive.

Perspective

Burke talks a lot of shit, but this team is not that far away from being good.
He;s added a lot of talent. Has he made some bad decisions? Sure, but there’s a lot more talent in the NHL and throughout the system. Fix goaltending, fix team defence (coaching – the personnel we have should be able to be at least adequate), hire a new coach.

Wilson’s run out of time. Burke deserves more. This was always a bubble team, and they haven’t gotten the goaltending they needed. But it’s not time to panic. Four years ago was time to panic. It was a hell of a lot worse then.

My degree is worthless

But fuck it, I’m stil a Leafs fan first, and a Red Wings fan second. And it’s still a spectacle that I’d rather not miss.

Amazing to me that Burke has basically given Ron Wilson a “pass” for his first two years in Toronto because Burke was overhauling the roster. There is zero accountability for anyone in the organization who’s underwhelming. Wilson has had two different teams to work with now in Toronto. There are no more excuses.

Third largest centre for english-language theatre worldwide, fyi.

I’ve posted like maybe once here, drunk, about a year ago. But I couldn’t restrain myself. Weird.

This is the most depressed I’ve been about this team, which is bizarre to me, since I’ve been a fan since I was able to read “TORONTO” on the commercial break scoreboard on tv. You’d think I’d be used to this by now. But something feels different this year. A perfect storm of unmet expectations? It sucks wearing the blue and white and feeling innately embarrassed about it, but it is what it is.

It was. I hate the core of the team, particularly Roy and Stafford. Vanek and Pominville get a pass by their awesomeness generally. Gaustad was way overpaid. I think Miller is acting like the de facto captain with how outspoken he is because nobody else will do it. They don’t have “it” and its frustrating because they are playing so well now in comparison to earlier. Of course, health has a lot to do with it, but so does personality and drive. They’ve only made the playoffs in the last decade when Mike Grier has been on the team. That’s not good.

And he’d say, “For you * smack smack * anything.”

I think it’s about shattered expectations. The Leafs managed to hold down a playoff spot for so long this season, it seemed as if even mediocre play would have carried them into 8th. But, especially tonight, it’s become clear that the Leafs aren’t a playoff team. And that’s gotta be disappointing, especially since it means that if the Leafs aren’t a playoff team this year, they’re not a contender in 2-3 years.

Moreover, you’re seeing a convergence among what Cox called the Two Solitudes of Leafs fans. Some of the fans – those who bought in most easily to the “rebuild on the fly” -wanted Burke to trade futures for a shot at the playoffs. They were disappointed – now doubly so, as even with Nash and a goalie, it’s clear that the playoffs would still be questionable. And now it’s clear to them that a quick fix from Burke is a mirage.

The other solitude, represented by myself and others, are the Tank Nation, the people who believe that picking up salary-cap cheap elite talent is the only way to build a champion. However, we’re still Leafs fans, and we’re still disappointed that the Leafs didn’t make the playoffs this year after such a promising season. Moreover, we’re disappointed that Burke didn’t sell enough at this deadline at the peak of some players’ value, to help shore up the prospect pool for an eventual build from within.

Either way, both sides of Leafs fandom are pissed. Hence the nasty.

I’m not arguing that isn’t the case. But to be fair a fucking chimp could put together a better group of young talent than JFJ. And I really don’t think even if those prospects turn out great, that it will be enough to turn this crappy group he’s assembled into anything more than a bubble playoff team.

by jd90 on Feb 29, 2012 12:31 AM EST up reply actions

that’s true. While I don’t like the Kessel deal, we still got Kessel out of it, and that’s something. Plus Burke brought us Phaneuf and Gardiner. If Grabbo resigns, then that’s another a solid 2nd liner we’ll have for a while, and a veteran leader for the kids.

While it’s less probable, Schenn may yet take a step forward. Mark Owuya is having a promising season with the Marlies. Colborne and Kadri may yet become good 2nd liners. McKegg will make the jump to the pros next year.

While the talent that’s been stocked up under Burke so far isn’t (apart from Kessel and Gardinerl) elite level talent, it’s still something to build on. Much more so than the Ferguson years. Add a Grigorenko or Radek Faksa to it, and in a few years, you’re in business.

I have no idea. I only watched it because I got it free. Summary: It’s an expensive horse that can understand English but not speak it. It’s taken over by a stupid British army who don’t understand what machine gun turrets are, it sacrifices its body for other horses, gets picked up by some girl who has a really strange relationship with her grandpa, is kidnapped by Nazi soldiers fighting 20 years too early, runs around like an idiot through No Man’s Land somehow avoiding all the landmines that still kill people today, gets caught in some wires after tearing them down so easily one wonders why the army just didn’t use horses instead of wire cutters, is saved by Axis and the Allies uniting despite them killing thousands of each other, recognized by a blind kid, and stares of into the sun.

do you guys think Burke will re-rebuild? or is he as egotistical as he appears? I don’t think anyone can fault him for what hes done…looking at the group he inherited. Sure you can blame him for the kessel trade, but you have to take risks as a gm and he’s definitely improved the club from our post lockout status… I just hope he has enough humility to do what’s best for the club, and not for his reputation. Imagine if he inherited the group we have right now and this was his first year… would he still have done nothing on deadline day? maybe its time for a new gm, not because Burke isn’t a capable general manager, but so that the new GM will treat this group like Burke treated the group he originally inherited and not the group that HE, SIR BRIAN BURKE HAS FASHIONED FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS….you know?

by ChadKilger on Feb 29, 2012 1:58 AM EST reply actions

No. He doesn’t believe in a slow rebuild. He didn’t want to trade players for picks. He believes in the group. This is our team, like it or not. Next year at this time how different can it really be?

One day it will dawn on Burke, that his two year ducks style retooling for the leafs has failed. And he needs to embrace his seven year canucks style lengthy rebuild. I’m guessing he thought he could replicate the success he had on the ducks.

The team constructed poorly – the forwards are poor at puck battles, cycling and defensive aspects of the game so they generally score off the rush and ignore the defensive aspects of the game. And the defenders are either slow skaters and don’t fit the forwards uptempo game or offensive gifted that don’t do defence. The team is Burke’s Frankenstein stitched together like Boyce’s nose.

is that because he doesnt think he can hold down the job long enough for a slow rebuild?

by ChadKilger on Feb 29, 2012 2:05 AM EST reply actions

No. It’s because he’s impatient. The question has to be asked whether he was the right man for the rebuild when he’s made it clear he’s impatient. by ChadKilger on Feb 29, 2012 2:16 AM EST reply actions

I believe what I saw

We didn’t have a team when Burke took over – sub 20th in league

We have a bubble team now. The picks that Burke got, he flips for more assets. He’s loaded our team with young prospects, which do what young players do. But they’re also getting better every year.

Look at the Aulie deal. A fourth-round pick, a throw-in in the Phaneuf trade. Helped the marlies out, even did some time last year in the NHL.

Flipped for a first round prospect Carter – rated Tampa Bay’s #1 by Hockey News.

Brian Burke, so far, has been the king of resource management. He’s made great moves for toronto, and we have in fact improved – despite the current drought. So as far as Brian Burke goes, I think he’s a good GM. Unfortunately the “Team of the Future” is still a few years out.

It’s the coach I’m having trouble reconciling with.

by BubbaLou on Feb 29, 2012 2:28 AM EST reply actions

Counter

1. Burke has always stated his goal is to be competitive in the playoffs not squeak in.

2, This is not a bubble team unless the bubble they’re attempting to get into is lottery picks.

3. Aulie wasn’t a throw in in the Phaneuf deal. Burke has stated the Phaneuf deal wouldn’t have happened if Aulie wasn’t included.

4.rating a prospect #1 in a system doesn’t mean much unless the team is stacked with prospects.

5. Burke hasn’t been excellent with resource management. Even in the best case scenario the Kessel deal is a wash if not a Boston victory (Dougie Hamilton pushes it over the edge). Even if we grant that other than that he’s made some great trades, which he has, he also has countered that with horrible FA signings. Perhaps he’s not used to the cap yet but having $7.5 million in cap space with Komisarek and Armstrong sitting on most nights is bad player evaluation

6. His team of the future is full of second liners.

7. He has never been good at evaluating goaltending talent. Remember Cloutier in Vancouver? Waiving Bryzgalov in Anahiem (the same year that moron JFJ traded the moon for Toskala)

8. He’s too fucking loyal to Ron Wilson and would rather make a point to the media by resigning him and having him announce it on Twitter on Christmas Day than fire his ass and get a new coach.

I’m constantly ridiculed by my Rangers fan friends and even my Devils fan friends (and every other fanbase in the league) and it sure as hell doesn’t help to see the Rangers sitting on top the eastern conference. We’ve got a nice core of young players, but you’d think by this time they’d be closer to at least a furious playoff push. If only it were the early 80’s….

oh come on. your one of the last dynasties. the rangers are envious believe me. the devils, who are a good team generally over the years would kill to be regarded like the 80’s islanders. dont even bring up the rangers, they are and will remain a goddam joke.

I mean it. Bring him back.

we dont win because we are this amazing conception via the god of hockey. we win because we work. we havent been working. we will never win any awards but like 18-20 other teams, if we bust our arses good things could happen.

I mean it. Bring him back.
