Lock & Load
James Mirtle of the Globe & Mail writes that the Leafs need their "big guns blazing" tonight when they take on the Sens in Ottawa:
Even so, it is notable that Kessel and Lupul’s drought hit the 10-game mark in the Leafs 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday. Since both had two-point nights against the Detroit Red Wings in early January, Kessel has only two goals and an assist and Lupul has a goal and four assists. Toronto is 5-4-1 over that stretch mainly due to the fact they’ve gotten 20 goals from their secondary scorers and played sound defensively.
For the Leafs to be a playoff team, they need scoring to come from both of their top lines. That hasn't really happened this season. Kessel and Lupul ran the show through December, and now the Grabovski line has taken over as the first line slides a bit. Hopefully the first line can get things back on track tonight.

Don’t worry guys, I’ll be at the game tonight and the Leafs have never lost a game I’ve been to.

I remember I went to a Thrashers-Leafs game at the ACC in 2010 with the lovely WraparoundCurl, I spent a good while before the game going on about how I’d never been to a game where the leafs had lost
Antropov scored the winner against the Leafs that game

Last year I went to see the Leafs play the Habs and Brett Lebda scored a goal. I’m pretty sure I bring some kind of magic with me to the rink.

Nope, 5-4. Kessel and Bozak each had 2 goals and 4 points that night.

Seems there’ll be a few PPP Ottawites in the house!
Me going doesn’t seem to cause anything awesome or weird to happen game-wise, but I sure as hell plan to be the loudest in my section.
I just need some kind of obnoxiously brilliant retort for when they inevitably play that lame “Leafs Suck” video.
Yet another Leaf fan in Ottawa.
You should learn the Spartan speech by heart and loudly recite it during the video, and whenever any Sens fans bother you.

Hi-jack the video feed to their jumbotron and put this up on the screen.

Or just print a giant picture of it and hold it high.

Huge Game
Battling for the playoffs, the division play generally ensures that the top two of each division make it (although, the Southeast is the usual exception to the rule). I will be shocked if both Washington and Florida (or maybe Winnipeg if things go horribly wrong for the Panthers) don’t make it. So if Toronto wants it, which they obviously do, they need look no further than climbing above Ottawa in the standings. Winning this game goes a long way to that goal (and gives them the shot to even up the season with Ottawa). Let the Sens and Devils fight out that last spot.
I don’t want to say they can’t afford to lose, but part of me feels that way with the rate teams pick up that charity point these days.
So, apparently I can now be followed.. but no stalking. @alsonamedphil
It sucks that so many guys decide to resign with the teams that drafted them instead of going to the open market. Maybe they will learn from Rick Nash and Richards/Carter…. and hopefully not take after Cammallari, that traitor.

Shots, goals and PDO by game and the raw data or you can eyeball trends.
You can run queries if you know the games numbers, but I don’t recall the nomenclature for that query. And you can change TOR with BOS or other teams to get those views.

it seems that in the last two seasons, only one line at a time seems to carry the load, for a certain period of time. Could this be an ice time issue or something else coaching-related?
none of the above
there were plently of times last year where both lines were firing/not firing at the same time
confirmation bias says that you just notice it more when one line carries the load for a game or two
when every one is going it is “a good few games” and when everyone is flat it is “a shitty few games”

To highlight this:
The games since December 1 where a member of Kessel’s line (Bozak/Lupul/Kessel) have scored as well as a member of Grabovski’s line (Crabb/MGK) has scored:
1/31vPIT, 1/19vMIN, 1/5vWPG, 1/3vTBL, 12/31vWPG, 12/29vCAR, 12/23vNYI, 12/16vBUF
A member of the Grabbo line and one of the Kessel line has scored in 8 of the last 26 games.

To be honest I think it is a good thing. Nobody (except Crosby and Gretzky) are hot all the time. It is great to have balanced scoring to make up for inevitable slumps.
Every player gets hot and cold sometimes. Just hope it is at a great time (like Bergenheim in last years playoffs).

I’m not sure if they’ve really been talked about as being such, but St. Louis has been one of the top 5 teams in the NHL since Hitchcock took over
s •
they have a pretty good young team and some excellent goaltenders, it isn’t really surprising that they managed to turn it around with a steady hand on the wheel
the big shocker was how poorly they were doing before, especially with the goaltending they were getting

Also Sutter’s record with the Kings is making someone look smart
Blues: D. Payne (6-7-0), K. Hitchcock (24-6-7)
Kings: T. Murray (13-12-4), J. Stevens (2-2-0), D. Sutter (10-3-6)
Capitals: B. Boudreau (12-9-1), D. Hunter (14-11-3)
Ducks: R. Carlyle (7-13-4), B. Boudreau (12-11-4)
Habs: J. Martin (13-12-7), R. Cunneyworth (6-11-2)
Canes: P. Maurice (8-13-4), K. Muller (11-12-5)
Jackets: S. Arniel (11-25-5), T. Richards (3-7-1)
Sutter’s record isn’t that great, essentially he’s one game above .500

Cam Charron was posting some Boudreau stats for ANH and WSH yesterday. The bottom line is that both teams have performed considerably better with Boudreau as their coach.

Yep, Boudreau wasn’t the problem. Lambert hit the nail on the head yesterday; they’re just a terribly undermotivated team.

Like someone said, loser points. You can dress it up however, but it’s still a 10-9 record. And 10-9 is only slightly better than 13-16.

Dreger says that the Kings are interested in MacArthur or Kulemin, and that both teams have been scouting each other lately. Who might we want in exchange for MacArthur? Would the best option just be to trade him for, say, a 1st round pick and be glad we’ve got some cap relief?

hopefully the pre-game interview is Reimer saying he forgives him for Healy saying Reimer was “selling” the Gionta hit. I would pay money to see Healy’s reaction to that… although I get the feeling he’d somehow find a way to be an asshole about it
