Maple Leafs Fan Cheering Guide - Feb. 4th

Aside from the Islanders beating the Senators 2-1 in overtime rather than in regulation, last night's outcomes were exactly what the Leafs wanted thanks to the Panthers downing the Jets also by a score of 2-1. Now there are several impact games this evening so let's get right to it.

New Jersey Devils at Philadelphia Flyers

No real shocker here, the Devils sit 1 point above the Leafs with a game in hand so it's GO FLYERS! all the way. Aside from their own, this is the most important game for the Leafs tonight.

Pittsburgh Peguins at Boston Bruins

Just like the Devils, the Penguins are going to be one of the teams fighting the Leafs for a Playoffs spot right down to the wire, whereas the Bruins have all but locked up the North East Division and their spot already. Tonight, we're rooting for the reigning champs.

Washington Capitals at Montreal Canadiens

Some of you say it's an impossibility. "I won't do it. I have morals and principles to uphold. No way, no how." Well I'm sorry ladies and gents, but a Canadiens victory helps the Leafs garner a Playoff berth so it's GO HABS GO tonight.

Buffalo Sabres at New York Islanders

In what parallel dimension would the Leafs be more concerned about the Islanders catching them in the standing than they would be the Sabres? This one apparently as the Isles are 1 point ahead of the Sabres with a game in hand. So again, drop the rivalry hate for one night and cheer for a Sabres victory.

Florida Panthers at Tampa Bay Lightning

We cheered them on to victory last night, yet we cheer on their defeat tonight. A Tampa Bay win is the best for the Leafs tonight.

And lastly of course GO LEAFS GO!

You don’t have to hope for a Habs win. You just hope for a Capitals loss, whoever that may be against.

If everything goes right tonight, the Leafs’ playoff odds go up 8.4% from 75.9% to 84.3%.

Donny, please.

by scrambles the death dealer on Feb 4, 2012 12:38 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

Also, a regulation win over the shenaturds would lower their chances 8.8% from 66.5% to 57.7%

Donny, please.

by scrambles the death dealer on Feb 4, 2012 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

but what are the chances everything goes right? Montreal can’t even fail properly if it means it would help us (see their last game against Jersey) so, since Washington is going to win, that pretty much guarentees a Florida victory too since that’s how cruel the hockey gods are to us.

by SlickWill on Feb 4, 2012 12:45 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah it’s unlikely that we get every game to go our way. Beating the Sens puts us up 8.8% though, so that’s a big difference.

Donny, please.

by scrambles the death dealer on Feb 4, 2012 12:46 PM EST up reply actions

Also interesting: after New York, Pittsburgh, Boston and Philadelphia (who all have 97%+ odds of getting in) is Florida with 84% odds and then the Leafs with 75.9% odds. The only other teams with relevant odds are New Jersey (69.3%), Ottawa (66.5%) and Washington (67.6%).

Donny, please.

by scrambles the death dealer on Feb 4, 2012 12:49 PM EST up reply actions

Why are Pittsburgh’s odds so high?

s •

by sportsfan2 on Feb 4, 2012 1:43 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe their is an adjustment because they are actually a good hockey team?

Reaslistically, we aren’t catching the Pens (particularily if Crosby and Staal can come back). They are in that top tier of the east (with Philly, NYR, and Boston), and will probably wrap up at least the 5th spot.

by samspade on Feb 4, 2012 3:20 PM EST up reply actions

I agree, but they aren’t that far from being out of it. Is it a strength-of-schedule thing?

It’s horrible, but lately I’ve gotten used to “wanting” the Habs to win. How gross is that?? I feel dirty. Also, GO LEAFS GO!!!

My mood probably depends on the results of last Leafs game. I may have a problem.

Perpetual mediocrity requires some success. No top picks for the Habs and a greater chance for the Leafs to make the playoffs = no brainer.
