A Day of Remembrance
Today marks the two year anniversary of Brendan Burke's sudden and tragic death in an automobile accident. Brendan was one of the first individuals in the hockey world to come out as a homosexual. Brendan Burke started something significant that has undoubtedly touched many lives. Brendan Burke made a difference. Today, Maple Leafs Hot Stove (please visit their site today to see their amazing piece on Brendan. I cannot do it justice) and Pension Plan Puppets ask that you try to make a difference as well.
MLHS has set up a paypal account where you can donate to the Miami University Brendan Burke Memorial Scholarship. You can also donate to the USA Hockey Brendan Burke Internship if you so choose.

Such a tragic story. RIP Brendon. Burke must be commended for his efforts to the cause. He is a true man of great character and there is no other person I would want running the Leafs.

RIP Brendan
As we continue the usual February rumour-mongering, we discovered last night on the Hotstove that Jeff Carter doesn’t have an NTC. Apparently it did not transfer over with him in the trade to Columbus.
Does this change or impact anyone’s view of the potential trade for him?
Always liked the player, still not sure that what it would take to acquire him (IMO still a lot, regardless of his plummeting of perceived value) would be worth it.
No no, dig UP stupid.
yeah I think so, he’s signed for 7 more years?

let’s say what Columbus gave up for him, a first rounder and a young top 6 forward…………..so a 1st and Kulemin/Kadri/Colborne

I’d say his trade value would also depreciate somewhat because: (a) he hasn’t been as good this season; (b) I’m guessing he really wants to get the fuck out of Columbus.

I’d think so too, but the Leafs’ first rounder probably isn’t a 7th overall, more likely around the 15th overall range so I think it’s slight depreciation there. As for the player going back, you’d have to think they’d want atleast one roster player going back. my guess would be a young top 6 or a prospect d-man.
Although I do think that Columbus would prefert to take the first and a player if they are offered that by Calgary. Likely Backlund

They’re not going to get value for Carter now. My guess would be a good young player (think Kadri), a draft pick other than a 1st, and a sizeable contract to make the money work.

I think they could do better than that. They’ll get 2 good pieces (probably not quite as good as Voracek and a top 7). Think Kadri and MacA type value.

Pretty hard to see Carter going anywhere without some bad salary going back.

Just occurred to me Lupul and Carter were good friends in Philly. Not sure if I’m slow on that, or…
Also not sure what that means.
well, that escalated quickly

A NTC that doesn’t travel is strange. I’m assuming that was just some weird quirk in Carter’s deal and not standard for NTCs (in which case Carter should be kind of angry with his agent).

I’m pretty sure I’ve heard of something similar before. It may be that No-trade clauses get nullified with a new team, but No-movement clause does not.
Apparently the team has the option whether or not to honor the NTC.

If you didn’t watch this video of Burke with Stroumboulopoulos, there are portions of it which seem very fitting on this day of remembrance. RIP Brendan Burke.

By the way, deadspin has a portion of an interview with Clint Malarchuk. It is extremely interesting, and includes touching on his battle with OCD, depression, and acceptance among family members. Worth the read.

No one should have to die so young, but we were lucky to have you as long as we did. I hope your courageous out coming will help those who are scared and in the closet.

I love that Kessel goes to town on the Sens. It always seems like other superstars (Gretzky, Malkin, Crosby, Yzerman) have beyond the usual amazing stats against Toronto. Nice to see it the other way around again. What were Mats’ stats against Ottawa, I wonder?

I think I’m going to have to personally take credit for Kessel’s performance last night. He’s got 7 points in the last 2 games I’ve been at.

Saw this on Reddit. Apparently the Sens site was confused for a bit. Or someone has a good sense of humour.

that picture made my eyes water, and even though we never knew Brendan, we know he must have been a pretty awesome dude being raised by a man as classy and brave as Brian Burke.
RIP Brendan.

I guess if NJ wins it at least keeps PIT close enough for the Leafs to leapfrog if they can continue this win streak.
Being a Leafs fan makes me bipolar.
NJ can keep winning so long as the Panthers tank.

My Facebook status. Wanted to share.
Two years ago today. The hockey world and the world in general lost a courageous young man. Brendan Burke was killed in an auto accident shortly after revealing that he was gay. In a sport where tough is the name of the game. Brendan showed that he was the toughest of all. On this day I ask that we as human’s be a little more tollerant and understanding of others.
