Halfway to Sochi
Man, it sure doesn't seem like two years since the golden goal in Vancouver, does it? The "IGGY!" heard round the world will remain one of the defining moments in Canadian hockey history. How does Canada repeat their outcome from 2010? By putting together an even better roster for the 2014 Winter Olympics, held in Sochi, Russia. We don't know for sure if NHL players will going, but it's going to be on the table as a part of this summer's CBA negotiations, and the players want it.
So assuming the NHL will be participating, who will Team Canada select? Follow along after the jump to find out who could make the final cut.
CENTER
It's tough to imagine a Canadian national team without Sid the Kid. If he's healthy, he'll go. Hopefully they'll have figured out how to get him back to 100% and keep him there.
Can't argue with Captain Serious. With Crosby out, is Toews the best Canadian hockey player in the world? He'll be 25 in 2014, already has one Gold Medal and a Cup. He was Canada's leading scorer in 2010. He's a lock.
The last great hope for the New York Islanders has absolutely lit up the scoreboard as a 21 year old for a moribund franchise. No reason not to expect him to achieve even greater heights as we get closer to the Olympics.
Another returning player from the 2010 gold medal team. Bergeron can do anything asked of him, and regularly goes up against the best in the world. He can still add some secondary scoring while playing an elite shutdown game.
LEFT WING
A powerful young emerging star in the Lone Star state, Benn has been impressing scouts for over two years. In addition to his incredible strength and balance, Benn possesses a hard, accurate shot. Canada will need some size down low, and Benn can provide that.
Naturally a center, Duchene has spent time at LW and would fit in nicely as a speedy, goal scoring option for any of of Canada's talented playmaking centers. He has been hobbled by a wonky knee this season, but he has been a fantastic goal scorer since entering the NHL and will only be 23 in 2014.
Ignore the position listed above. Kane is a LW and plays the position with authority. He was fairly thin when he entered the NHL, but as he has filled out, you can see the benefits of his physical style of play. Though Kane has plenty of skill, he has learned that he can simply overpower a lot of NHLers. Like Benn, Canada will need some physical play up front and Kane can certainly help in that area.
Couture has some experience at LW, and that's where he will have to play if he wants to go to Sochi. Couture is a hardworking scorer with a pretty sound two-way game. He certainly won't be one of Canada's go-to guys on offense, but provides quality depth and could play on a solid two-way line with Bergeron.
RIGHT WING
Canada will have a large group of talented centers to choose from. That means some guys are going to have to play out of position. Stamkos has had a few cups of coffee at RW in the NHL, and that's where I would expect him to play in Sochi. He'll be Canada's top goal scoring option.
Another C/RW guy who will likely have to play wing at the Olympics. We all now know why the Flyers were prepared to dump Mike Richards and Jeff Carter. Giroux is one of the NHL's finest playmakers and close to a lock for Team Canada.
While linemate Ryan Getzlaf continues to slump, Perry has continued on as an elite scorer in the NHL. He won the Hart Trophy as last season's MVP, and he's on pace for another 35 goal season. He also has the ability to get under the opponent's skin, although some of his decisions are questionable. He scored 4 goals in Vancouver in 2010, and Perry will only be 28 in 2014.
How can you leave Eberle off the list? He's in just his second NHL season and is only pace for nearly 40 goals. "Clutchiness" has been shown to be mostly myth, but Eberle does have a knack for scoring timely goals. I'd chalk that up to more luck than anything, but hey, Canada can always use more luck on its side.
Obviously, I'd go with a younger group of forwards than many if I was picking the team. Canada's has loads of talented players, and many of those from 2010 will be leaving or have left the prime of their careers in the next few seasons. Who's in your forward group for Team Canada? Leave some comments and be sure to check back later for Part II: Defense & Goaltending.

Iginla
Jerome gets one more chance at the big dance.
I think so, especially if you know its your last hurrah and you are wearing the “C”.
5-2-7 in 7GP in 2010 = tied for 2nd on the team w/ Crosby/Heatly/Getzlaf only behind Toews who had 8
if he goes in place of any of the listed players above, it will be a terrible mistake

and your point is?
It’s not a matter of how old they are its a matter of who is the best at their positions and the wave of talent in the last 5-10 years is much better than the guys who will be over 35 2 years from now.
Kadri Fanboy since 2006
I’m fine in acknowledging that Iginla likely won’t be the best player for his position at the time, I’m just advocating he will still get the call and can participate at a more than acceptable level.
By my count only 4 of the proposed forwards have played in the Olympics and I think Hockey canada gives Iginla the nod for experience.
Iginla has a better chance of retiring from hockey before 2014 than he does of making the olympic team

In 2010 4 of the 13 forward were in their 30s
2 were 30, 1 was 31, and 1 was 32.
However on D 3 of 7 were and they were older at 33, 35, and 26.
In net they were even older with 2 of 3 being in their 30s at 30 and 37.
By that pattern it is likely that most of the players will be in their prime (mid-late 20s) at forward, and if we see older players it is likely at D or G.
The interesting thing about the team is that there were only 2 players 26-29 years old and they were Keith at 26 (likely to make it again) and Heatley at 29 (very unlikely). Almost every skater was either the next generation just coming into their prime from age 24-26 (9 of the 20 skaters) or veterans just leaving their prime ages 29-33 (6 of the 20). The other 5 were the ageless Nieds and Pronger and the young guns in Crosby, Toews, and Doughty (20-21 years old). There was no one on the team who was 27-29 (besides Heatley) that would be in their early 30s now. So if there is an older player to make it, he’ll probably be in his mid to late 30s. The only ones who would have a chance at that are Thornton, Iggy, Marleau, and Boyle and I really highly doubt any of them make it.
Without realizing Canada seemed to go 3 or 4 years without this elite level of talent.

Yeah that was what I was pointing out. I think Spezza was likely good enough to make the last team (Richards too), but they’ll all probably be to far past their prime by the next olympics. The one weird guy is Sharp who seems to have just hit his prime late, so maybe he’ll be going strong.

I was thinking that too… I would probably take him over 3 of the LW players, at least if he keeps this level of play up. Also, they should take him to troll the other teams’ players. That alone makes him more valuable than Couture or Kane.
They will be taking some players who will be over the age of 30 I’m pretty sure, obviously we’ll have to see which guys get out of their funks (I would bet at least 1 of Carter, Richards, Nash, Staal, Getzlaf will be there).
Also seem to select some checking forward types.
While the youth approach sounds good, it’s never been Canada’s M.O. even at the junior level. That’s why I expect to see guys like Sharp, Nash, Iginla, and Thornton on the 2014 Canada team.

Food for thought
Stamkos, St Louis, Brad Richards were 2,3 ,4 in CDN scoring in 2009/10 and didn’t make the Olympic team – they base selection off more than current production.
Crosby also didnt make the 2006 team, despite being a 100 point player that year if im not mistaken

Team Canada 2012 Forwards
Stamkos _ Crosby _ Tavares
Seguin _ Bergeron _ Duchene
MRichards _ Toews _ Giroux
Perry _ Getzlaf _ Nash
Benn
The assumption here is that they are going to build 4 lines that are each capable of playing Power vs Power. Four first lines, if you will.
I also think they will continue to pick teammates, and particularily linemates. Thats why you see Seguin up there on Bergeron’s wing.
There are no Edmonton Oilers because I don’t think they’ll be ready (same as Stamkos this year).
J Staal, E Staal, Cotoure, Thornton and Carter will probably all be in the mix.
I doubt Seguin makes it because Bergeron won’t be on a scoring line anyways imo. He’ll be there for the tough minutes.
Stamkos-Crosby-Benn/Neal
Tavares-Toews-Giroux
Perry-Getzlaf-Duchene (most sheltered line)
MRichards-Bergeron-Nash
Neal/Benn
Kadri Fanboy since 2006
The actual lines I designed were just to help me pick 13 guys, and to keep teammates/linemates in my mind. Don’t read to much into them.
I really do think Seguin is as good a bet as anybody to be there. He already plays on Bergeron’s wing (though he doesn’t alsways go out for the Dzone starts that Bergeron gets) against tough competition, and he can score.
This is fun
So how about the Yanks. I’m going to design this team on the assumption that Burke is still GM, and that he still goes ‘Scoring / Checking’
Kane _ Stastny _ Kessel
Oshie _ Pavelski _ Pacioretty
Brown _ Kesler _ Parise
Dubinsky _ Backes _ Callaghan
Again, don’t put to much stock into the lines. Definitley a ‘Scoring / Checking’ mentality in place, although those 2 ‘checking’ lines are boss as hell.
Why do I care about teams that wont win gold?

Patch will probably be a better player than Dustin Brown by then (if he isn’t already). I also left off JVR, who could go. In fact, looking again I’d probably drop Dubinsky and Brown.
The USA definitley doesn’t have the same Super Elite Depth as Canada, which is why it makes a lot of sense to build that team with Scoring / Checking in mind.

Mostly curious what everyone’s take on Moulson was, but there didn’t seem to be a guy on the list who likes to get in front of the net and find rebounds and score dirty goals.

Not nearly as talented as a bunch of other guys I’d take on Team Canada before him.

Curiously didn’t show up until Tavares did.
Not really the case. Only had 29 games with the Kings before coming the Isles, and did put up 6 goals in that span. Showed scoring prowess at the AHL level and in college prior to that. He just never really had a legitimate shot in the NHL before he made it with the Islanders.
Quisp has some good stuff on his stint with the Kings if you’re more interested.
He’s definitely not as talented as a lot of guys, but he’s a better goal scorer than almost everyone in the league.

Not really the same level-MacArthur has never cracked 30. Moulson’s onto his third straight 30 goal season, and might threaten for 40.
I really don’t care if he makes it-I’m hoping the NHL scraps the whole Oylmpic thing, but I’m surprised at the lack of knowledge about Moulson’s ability.
The NHL at the Olympics is the real all-star gathering. Brilliant hockey played at an extremely high level because their is pride at steak stake.

no one here “lacks knowledge” of Moulsons ability, we are just aware that he is behind way too many superior players to even get an honourable mention for, quite possibly, the best hockey team ever assembled
this is not a snub, it is cold hard fact
the Clarke MacArthur comparison was SUPPOSED to be inexact since your only argument seems to be that Moulson scores more goals than almost everyone in the league, MacArthur is 58th out of 840 players listed on NHL.com in goal scoring, so he is by all accounts better at goal scoring than almost everyone in the NHL

Stamkos-Crosby-Tavares
Nash-Toews-Giroux
Bergeron-Getzlaf-Perry
Benn-Thornton-Eberle
Thornton is probably the surprise to most people but I think he may be the “vet” of the team. He would be pretty old at 34 and has cooled off the last couple years to about a 0.9 PPG player instead of 1.0+. So we’ll see.
Also a completely dark horse name: Chris Stewart. At the end of last season I could have seen him have a big argument made for him. He is having a really bad season now, but if he can refind his stride he is a great powerforward.

I like the team
It meets my national team criteria:
1. Don’t take the old guys. There’s lots of leadership there, you don’t have to add Mark Messier just because he’s got a big name. Take the current best players.
2. Don’t take the grinders. There’s lots of defensive ability there, you don’t have to add Kris Draper just because that’s all he does. Take the best players.
3. Speed. International ice demands speed.
The only change I would make is that I think Nash could still fit, depending on how some of these young guys like Kane and Benn come along. Oh, and you left off 100-point scorer Nazem Kadri.
I've been looking at the sky
Oh, and you left off 100-point scorer Nazem Kadri.
