Leafs at Flyers: The New Hotness vs. The Old Hotness

Photo

Who: The Toronto Maple Leafs vs. The Philadelphia Flyers

What: Game 55 of the regular season.

When: 7:00 PM EST

Where: TSN, NHLNet, AM640

The Leafs are going to the Winter Classic, and tonight they visit its 2012 host city, and runners up. The Flyers are 4-3-3 in their last ten, and are coming off a 0-1 OT loss to the Islanders. The Leafs will play their third game in four nights and are just 5 points back of the 4th place Flyers (though the Flyers have a game in hand).

Star-divide

Last time these two teams met, Giroux's stretch pass made the Leafs' D look like the Oilers', as Jagr was sprung for multiple breakaways. It should be no surprise that Komisarek is the healthy scratch, and Schenn is on the fourth pairing, as cutting off passing lanes, especially in the neutral zone, will be key. The last time Phaneuf and Hartnell met, Hartnell ran his mouth after beating Phaneuf's All-Star Game defensive effort. Presumably, he glanced over his shoulder first.

The Flyers' lineup is still without Chris Pronger, whose season has been cut short by post concussion syndrome. Bryzgalov has a virus of some sort - hopefully he didn't catch Pronger's - so Bobrovsky will start, and Jason Bacashihua has been called up on emergency recall to ride the pine.

The Leafs lines:

Lupul-Bozak-Kessel

MacArthur-Grabovski-Kulemin

Lombardi-Connolly-Crabb

Brown-Steckel-Armstrong.

-----

Gunnarsson-Phaneuf

Liles-Franson

Gardiner-Schenn.

I have to say, I’m a big fan of these defense pairings. Until we can clone Gunnarsson, this is probably our best defensive lineup

It’ll be interesting to see how well Wilson line matches the Giroux line without last change.

Well, the good news is, he’s good about getting Gardiner O-zone starts and I expect Giroux is probably an O-zone starter in his own right. My guess is that Phaneuf and Gunnarsson are thrown out for every d-zone faceoff that they aren’t too tired for.

Time to hit two Bryz with one stone with a win tonight.

I played hockey with Joe Bowen and his nephew (lol) at double rinks during the summer (don’t know if that place still exists) about ten years ago. He was playing Goalie and played with us almost two hours. I agree, the man’s a saint.

Re: Bryzgalov

A buddy of mine (Flyers Fan) told me the Flyers goaltending issues were resolved when Bryz signed that contract. I texted him the other day, asked him how he felt about the #1 goalie saying in a shootout that the nets felt like soccer nets…..Still waiting for a response..

OI OI OI!
“To pass the time.”
Bob shaved his head
He got a new identity
Sixty-two holed air cushioned boots
And a girl who rides a scooter
Gonna take him out, of town
They would get away
Riding around, as the trucks drive by
You could here the mother fuckers go…

A couple of lines, an extra thermos of Joe
He’ll be kickin’ in heads at the punk rock show, yeah
Bob’s the kinda guy who knows just what
Bob’s the kinda guy who knows just what to do
When the doctor tells him to
“Quit your drinkin’, now’s the time.”
Will he ever walk the line
To all my friends, I feel just great
But will he ever walk the line
Kickin’ ass and bustin’ heads
Red suspenders
Once a day he shaves his head
But will he ever walk the line?
Will he ever walk the line?
Will he ever walk the line?
Will he ever walk the line?
Oh will he ever walk the line?

apparently

it was a bad idea for Burke to agree to the Winter Classic according to Bob McCown because

i know an owner of a franchise, of a different sport, that did one of these 24/7 things and he told me that all during the filming and after it was done, the players all acted like rock-stars the whole year and…ended up playing like Crap. Says it was a bad idea and he would never do it again.

flag me for listening to McCown.

Coolest thing about that article was the fact that we get Anaheim’s 4th round pick next year because the league’s sixth leading scorer has played over 60 games for us. I was not aware of this.

The Leafs took on Lupul as a salary dump so that Anaheim could afford Beauchemin’s salary. The draft pick is the price Anaheim paid the Leafs to compensate them for that.

This would be the greatest thing ever.

The real importance of this trade is actually completely unrelated to any of the players.
This move would give the Leafs the ability to resign Grabovski immediately before he hits free agency, and would leave plenty of cap space left for resigning Kule (who should be affordable after the year he’s having).

by LeftNutForAStarCenter on Feb 9, 2012 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

Olesz was who Tallon sent over to Chicago to acquire Campbell.
I wonder if Burke had cap space or discussions to trading Komisarek for Campbell last year.
