PPP Podcast 17: We're Suddenly on Schedule
[iTunes] [Direct Link] [Podcast RSS Feed]
We're trying really hard to do this weekly, so to facilitate that we're shortening the podcast. We're trying to do about 20-25 minutes of interesting fresh content so that you can mainline it. Bet you didn't think you'd see another one of these so soon, eh?
Our topics? What difference will Randy Carlyle make? Has Don Cherry finally lost it? Do you believe a word Burke says?
The music?

I also want to start a petition that every dumb topic/comment on the hotstove shall now be referred to as “cutting potatoes”
Y'all heard about me, you just didn't know it was me
One difference in this podcast vs other msm approaches is that the panel mostly share similar opinion on position. A more mainstream approach would have a pro-Cherry position, an anti-Cherry position and maybe a neutral position. It is certainly be more polarizing (and ridiculous) if one person tried to debate support for Cherry’s position but nonetheless you guys still did good job bringing different perspectives.
Yeah, what this panel was truly lacking was a jingoistic old wind bag. I agree. Let’s go. (thumbs up)

I get what you mean and that’s really what I find is wrong with the MSM. Sometimes there isn’t a cogent pro-Cherry position although we did highlight things we do well. In the context of his rant about Ontario-born players it would be giving legitimacy to the position to let some argue in its favour.

Why has this basic point been missed?
Let me first say that if the Leafs were composed entirely of Russians (or Swedes or Americans, etc) and they were winning, I’d be thrilled. I don’t care about nationalities.
But, Brian Burke stated in his HNIC interview on Saturday that Ontario players have their best games in front of family and friends in Toronto and that it makes it tough for his team to win.
Grapes points out that the Leafs have no players from Ontario on the roster.
You would think the bulb would go on in Burke’s head, realizing that he should have some Ontario players on his team if HE believes they play better in Toronto. Grapes made this very simple point. Of course Burke’s bootlickers didn’t appreciate the simple point made by Cherry and Ron Mclean.
Does Burke know how stupid he looks for complaining about how hard Ontario NHLers play in Toronto then not have any on his roster?
The bigger issues to me are (i) Burke’s list of excuses for why this team still sucks after nearly 4 seasons under his control continues to lengthen and (ii) Burke seems to be almost preoccupied with controlling the media in Toronto. Whether it’s Cox one day, Simmons the next, Feschuk earlier this season and now Cherry, you get the impression that Burke is fixated on winning the press conference, not the Eastern conference.
If you got Burke to speak on it more he’d probably admit that players playing 1 or 2 games a year is a massively different proposition than having them play their entire season here.
It makes sense that Ontario-born guys will play good games here when it’s their only chance to play in front of their family. And I think it also makes sense that the pressure increases exponentially when they play 41 games a year in Toronto and live here during the season.
Not to mention, that as Chemmy pointed out, it makes little to no sense to limit the pool from which you are trying to draw players.
And as Forbes pointed out, getting Ontario-born players isn’t a panacea as proven by Matt Stajan, John Mitchell, etc. Or his point about when does it end? If the team sucked with GTA guys on the roster then should the heat be on Burke for not having guys from the 416? Because there aren’t that many of those in the NHL to begin with.
And as I noted, even if we agree that it would be great to have more Ontario-born/GTA-born players then the problem becomes that it’s not a matter of simply wanting them. There is a system for talent distribution that makes it difficult to get GTA players. You probably don’t realize that the Leafs have the most local players (Ontario-born) in their system with 13 on top of the foreign players that they drafted that learned their trade in the OHL. Guys that are drafted by other teams will not become available without paying a price or them hitting the open market and if they’re guys that are elite talent then they just won’t hit the market.
But maybe it’s too much to ask for Cherry’s bootlickers to use a little common sense and bother to research his latest rant?

Very good point about...
Ontario born players and two comparable players. One from say Europe and one from Ontario. Personally, and this doesn’t have anything to do with the fact I’m European (it’s my general opinion) if you could stipulate that two guys had the same stats and exactly the same intangibles, size etc and basically differ only in their place of birth I kind think the Leafs would be obligated to draft a Ontario born guy first. Because it’s tends to most of the fanbase’s feelings. The team is from Ontario… But that’s never the case. because there are always variables.

basically, all things equal, yeah take the Ontario guy. But all things are never equal, so it doesn’t really matter. Get the best player, I don’t care if he’s from Papua New Guinea.

The Hot Stove discussion made me realize I wasn't following Elliotte Friedman on twitter.
D’oh. Problem solved.
Regarding Cherry: I don’t really get why people get so worked up over what the guy says. I’ve always considered him to be a cartoon character anyway. The last time I can remember strongly agreeing with something that came out of his mouth was when he said Vesa Toskala shouldn’t have been the Leafs’ starting goalie. And by that point we’d already known that for more than three quarters of a season.

doubt there's anyone in Manchester who support United?
As someone currently living in Manchester England I assure you the city is full of them.
Haven’t listened yet, but just wanted to point out why you need to podcast more:
