Overall I think that it was a pretty good off season for Leafs fans. I'm actually liking Burke's moves. First let's take a look at the two trades we made:
- To Winnipeg G Jonas Gustavsson, to Toronto & a conditional 7th round pick 2013
- To Philidelphia D Luke Schenn, to Toronto James van Riemsdyk
These two trades are pretty easy to grade. I mean, we weren't going to sign Jonas so a conditional 7th rounder is better than nothing for him. Editor's Note: Since he didn't sign in Winnipeg (who can blame him) the Leafs actually got nothing for him.
On the JVR side I love it we get a young, big, of course American power forward who can score and has a big presence. We traded him for our young defenceman Luke Schenn whose days in Toronto were definitely numbered.
Next up was our draft weekend.
With our first pick, the 5th pick in the 2012 entry draft, we took defenceman Morgan Rielly. He plays in the WHL for the Moose Jaw Warriors. He is a 6'1" 200 pound offensive defenceman with good speed and some decent defensive ability.
I was extremely happy with our second round pick, 35th overall. We took another defenceman Matt Finn. At 6'0" 200 pounds Finn is a good two way defenceman who can get points, play good defence, and soak up a lot of minutes. A lot of scouts had this guy in the first round and some even in their top twenty which is why I was so happy with this pick. Last year he played for Guelph of the OHL.
I don't expect as much out of most of our other drafted players as they aren't developed like these Finn and Rielly. Our next pick wasn't until the fifth round, 126th overall when we took Dominic Toninato an American centre who is 6'0" 165 pounds. He played for Duluth East High School in Minnesota. Our next picks came at 156th and 157th overall in the 6th round where we first took Connor Brown a 5'10" 160 pound right winger who plays for Erie of the OHL and then at 157th we took a centre from the London Knights Ryan Rupert who is about 5'8" and 184 pounds. And in our final pick of the draft in the 7th round, the 3rd last pick overall we took Victor Loov a defenceman from Sweden.
So out of the big 3 moves which is your favorite one? JVR to Toronto, Morgan Rielly at 5, or Matt Finn at 35.
