Been awhile since my last post here, I realized after a few games of posting in the comments sections of game threads that I was paying attention more to the comments and much less to the game, and therefore was missing out on actually watching. Anyways, hockey is AWESOME. I had so much fun watching my first season, got spoiled by making the playoffs in the first year I've ever decided to watch, and consequently got to watch a historic collapse in game 7 after slowly gaining hope after ever win. I ended up being able to watch the majority of games but usually missed out on games on Saturdays due to NHL GameCenter not carrying the game and not having CBC due to being in Arizona/California. Some games I decided to watch illegally but the lower quality combined with my general lack of hockey knowledge led to just being lost and confused the majority of the time.
Somewhere in the middle of the season, I chose JVR as my favorite Leaf. I didn't want to choose Kessel or Phaneuf as my favorites, just cause. Not that I dislike them, I just wanted to pick a, in my opinion, *relatively* unknown player as my favorite.
Won my first ever fantasy hockey league. I have no idea how. I managed to actually dominate posting a 69-23-8 win/loss in categories while leading the league in goals, assists, ATOI, SOG, and PPP. Go figure.
Now for the actual purpose of writing this: I have some questions that I hope some people could be kind enough to answer as I move into the offseason and, hopefully, a second successful season as a Leafs fan.
1) Can someone explain the intricacies of the faceoff? Mostly basic stuff/rules: Who puts their stick on the ice first, what causes someone to get thrown out of the circle, etc. Not necessarily the strategies behind winning one.
2) Who are some of the Leafs prospects that people are most excited about. Mostly, who are the recent 1st/2nd round picks that are coming through the pipes. Side note: how are draft picks valued? From what I read, the 2nd round pick thrown in the Bernier trade is considered to be mostly a crap shoot. Is this roughly equivalent to having a second round pick in the NBA draft?
3) Does anyone have some good twitter follow suggestions? I currently follow @hope_smoke, @felixpotvin, @espn_burnside, @katiestrangespn, @tsnjamesduthie, @mirtle, @darrendreger, @real_espnlebrun, @hennytweets, @sunhornby, @jonasTSN1050, @TSNBobMckenzie, and of course @mlse. That list is mostly starting from ~5 and just following whoever they retweet/whatnot.
4) How is GAA calculated and what does it truly mean? I know it stands for Goals Against Average, but that's about it.
Thanks in advance for your help! Beyond happy that I decided to be a Leafs fan and actually start to watch+care about hockey, starting to love this sport.
