"If you must choose..." A look at when the Leafs trade youth for vet help..or vets for the fountain of youth.

The Leafs have a mixed record when they trade youth for vet help or vets for youth. Here's some recent history of when the club panicked for vet help. Sometimes, the moves, help, in other times they hurt.

In the past the Leafs have tried to make moves to get them over the hump, sometimes with disastrous results:

Toronto Maple Leafs acquire Date Colorado Avalanche acquire
Ryan O`Byrne
April 3, 2013
2014 4th round pick

O'Byrne was a was quin-essential rental. He cost the Leafs a 4th round pick, and it's too early to tell if that pick will haunt the Leafs, but since ROB's Leafs days, he's been banished to the KHL. Not necessarily bad numbers overall, but since he wasn't re-signed it wasn't exactly a good move.

Toronto Maple Leafs acquire Date Pittsburgh Penguins acquire
Luca Caputi
Martin Skoula
March 2, 2010
Alexei Ponikarovsky

This trade at the time was hailed as part of a harbinger move of rebuilding the club. Caputi gave glimpses of hope, but never progressed his game past the AHL, and seems destined to not plateau past that point. Skoula never played a game for the Leafs. Ponikarovsky on the other hand, is still a useful NHLer, even though he's past his prime.

Toronto Maple Leafs acquire Date Calgary Flames acquire
Wayne Primeau
2011 2nd round pick (#43-Brandon Saad)
July 27, 2009
Anton Stralman
Colin Stuart
2012 7th round pick

Though technically not a deadline move, it was still a step backwards. Primeau was a plugger, but struggled to gain consistency, and eventually found his way off the Leafs roster. Stralman is still a somewhat useful NHL defenseman, though he never made his mark with the Leafs. Brandon Saad on the other hand, looks like a fixture on the Blackhawks. The Leafs made a double-mistake by not drafting him and selecting Tyler Biggs instead.

Toronto Maple Leafs acquire Date San Jose Sharks acquire
Owen Nolan
March 5, 2003
Brad Boyes
Alyn McCauley
2003 1st round pick (#21-Mark Stuart)

Brad Boyes went on to be an NHL all-star and is still a productive player in the NHL. Mark Stuart is also a useful NHL defenseman. McCauley went on to play 4 more seasons in SJ, including a career best year in 2003-2004. Owen Nolan played one more season with the Leafs before being run out of town with injury issues that ultimately cost Leafs trainer Chris Broadhurst his job. Nolan didn't make a playoff impact for the Leafs.

Toronto Maple Leafs acquire Date Los Angeles Kings acquire
Aki Berg
March 13, 2001
Adam Mair
2001 2nd round pick (#49-Michael Cammalleri)

Berg went onto a hall-of-shame career and is often still maligned by Leafs fans. Mair had a decent enough career as a 3rd/4th line player with the Buffalo Sabres before ultimately retiring in 2011. Mike Cammalleri however has been a decent top 6 player, though he's struggled to find a long-time residence in a few different cities.
