Leafs Trades

[11:20am] So the Leafs' ball gets rolling as the Wade Belak Era has ended. He has been moved to the Florida Panthers for a 5th round pick in this summer's draft. Belak was a great guy but was only marginally better than Woz as a defender and the team has much better 3rd and 4th liners. It's good to see the team get something for someone that has no part in the team's future.

On second thought: This is WADE BELAK moving to Florida! Who will Sportsnet use for their funny segments now? What about LeafsTV?! This move has a huge effect on the local television funny segment market. It'll be interesting to see what moves will arise from trying to fill that void. Look for TSN to take advantage by bringing back funnyman Tie Domi and Sportsnet will probably take a chance on Jeremy Williams who has shown flashes of humour.

[12:50pm] I am off to lunch so you can just assume that the trades will be fast and furious while I am gone. Feel free to post any Leafs trades and offer instant analysis.

[2:20pm] Wow. Good thing I don't run a site based on breaking trades. This day sucks so far. Only one really big move. 40 minutes left and the summer looms large for the Leafs. Let's see what Cliff has up his sleeves.

[2:56pm] Here's a deal! Hal Gill to the Penguins for a 2nd and 5th rounder. Great move by the Silver Fox who got more than what I thought Gill would draw (a 2nd/3rd rounder) which will open up room for Stralman and Kronwall to step into the lineup.

[3:00pm] That's all she wrote for any deals not already set up. Not quite the big day that Leaf fans had expected but there are three more picks in the kitty and my friend that called it a multiple year rebuild was right. The Leafs still have the summer to look forward to in terms of moving guys so this is not a disaster by any stretch of the imagination. It's not what we wanted, obviously, but it was a good start. I'll have a bigger recap on the day and what it means for the Leafs later today once things have settled down.

[3:24pm] Kilger goes to the Panthers for a 3rd round pick. The year's on these deals haven't been confirmed yet but another clearing of salary from next year's number and another pick.

[3:40pm] So TSN still has not announced that the Leaf are on the list of teams that are officially done but if the picks are in 2008 then the Leafs are looking at their own first, the Pens' second (their own went to SJ for Toskala), their own third and the Panther's third, and the Leafs', Pens', and Panthers' 5th round picks.

Our strategy
must be to completely bottom out as the biggest bunch of pussies in the league before we build ourselves back into a physical team that intimidates and is not the intimidated.  In this vein, expect Moore to be signed long term.

Dominic Moore

You don't like him?!?!? He's not meant to be a tough guy and I hope they re-sign him but your comment echoed the first e-mail I got from The Correspondent:

Wow, lets get even less tough. I guess a pick is always a good thing
though.

moore

has been a pleasant surprise. this year's boyd devereaux.

while belak definitely is tough, he's pretty much useless other than the fact he brings some intimidation. if the leafs want to be a tough team to play against, they can be, they just need to play harder...

enforcers are a thing of the past...a 5th round pick for belak? not sure what florida is smoking down there...............but i want some

A Pick is a pick

Let's see what they can do with this. Hopefully the first of many picks.

by PPP on Feb 26, 2008 11:44 AM EST up reply actions

Moore
I don't hate him, but isn't one Boyd Deveraux enough?  How many good skating defensive players that won't hurt us much/help us much do we need compared with a grinder/tough guy who can play the same minutes?  Tough one to put to a Leaf fan, but would you rather have Chris Neil or either of the two I mentioned?

by penaltyshotsca on Feb 26, 2008 11:43 AM EST reply actions

Neil

I hate Neil so much. I'd rather be dressed and have to fight the other team's goons than that flat-track bully. If the Leafs need to fight someone small they have Darcy Tucker.

by PPP on Feb 26, 2008 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

never in a million years

would i want neil in a leafs uniform. he is a pathetic hockey player and a douche bag extraordinaire. moore and devereaux any day of the week...

belak can only play 5 minutes a game...and never sees any time in the 3rd period

on the other hand, moore and devereaux are defensively responsible and can kill penalties...they trump belak any day of the week as well

by eyebleaf on Feb 26, 2008 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

Toughness

The team definitely does need more of it. They need guys that hit. Kilger in the lineup and Mark Bell is there next year. Those guys skate and hit and they need more of that than actual fighters.

kilger

you think he'll be dealt?

he can definitely helf a playoff team

for maybe a third rounder? (if belak gets a 5th, kilger's got to get a 3rd)

by eyebleaf on Feb 26, 2008 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

helf

and by helf i mean help

by eyebleaf on Feb 26, 2008 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

Kilger

Teams are apparently interested in him. He'd give you toughness with a little bit of scoring and the Leafs could snag a pick. He'd be interesting out West where teams are going against the goony Ducks.

by PPP on Feb 26, 2008 12:05 PM EST up reply actions

kilger, other stuff

Yeah, I could see this guy getting traded. I don't know the specifics of his contract (anyone know where I could find that?), but he would make sense to get moved.

Am I the only one who forgot we were playing Ottawa last night? And am I the only one who thinks we're in some sort of bizzarro world thingy?

Forgetfullness

I had no clue the Leafs were playing until I dropped by a friend's house to pick up some things and he told me the Leafs were winning.

weird day

it was the playing on Monday. Were they playing tonight I totally would have remembered. But oh well.

didn't see that one coming!

by eyebleaf on Feb 26, 2008 12:03 PM EST reply actions

Good Deal

For the Habs. Might as well get Price in there and that 2nd rounder is either a good pick or a good toss in for Hossa.

DAMMIT!

Neil

Just so you guys know, I would spit in his mother's face for giving birth to that cretin.  Problem is that we need someone exactly like him on our team.

Hahaha

A Neil-like player sure. Neil, no.

sens pick up Lapointe for a 6th. Not bad.

Well, Bryan McCabe has done some kinda funny stuff before, but that's not that great. He's the only one I can think of unless one of the younger guys steps up and is secretly funny. Any other suggestions?

Leafs

I can't believe Wade Belak for a 5th round pick is the only move this team is gonna make today.  What a joke.

by Evening News Team on Feb 26, 2008 2:24 PM EST reply actions

A Joke

Hey, it's the best practical joke ever pulled on a fanbase other than putting the team's arena 20 minutes out of town in the middle of a cow-patty-filled field...

Please Cliff....

goodbye hal

gill to the penguins

if (when) colaiacovo gets hurt again, we're screwed...otherwise this is a good move, becuase it means more stralman...

but if carlo does go down...would it mean the return of (shudder) wozniewski?

by eyebleaf on Feb 26, 2008 2:52 PM EST reply actions

D

If(when) Carlo goes down, why don't they just put Belak back th...oh.

Stralman and Kronwall

Have to be very happy with this move.

Gill

I thought he was worth a first.  Don Waddell should thank the Pens for building his franchise.

kilger

dealt to florida for a third rounder...as i prophecised shortly before noon

Picks

With the Leafs getting a 2nd, 3rd, and two 5ths, what are the Leafs picks this year?  Didn't they trade their second away for Toskala?

A breakdown would be great.  Anyone?

by Evening News Team on Feb 26, 2008 3:25 PM EST reply actions

Picks

As far as I know they'll have their first pick, the second, a third, and 3 5ths now.

by PPP on Feb 26, 2008 3:27 PM EST up reply actions

Gill and Kilger in hand
are far better than picks in the bush.  Before we get too excited about draft picks, here is a sobering bit of statistics:

25 percent of 2nd round picks make the NHL
12 percent of 3rd round picks
I couldn't find the stat for 5th rounders, but I will be generous and say 3 percent make it

For Hall Gill, our best penalty killer, and most reliable defensive defenseman on a team that no longer has one, we have a 15 percent chance of getting an actual player.  Likely less than half of that 15 percent will be a player of Gill's quality.

For Kilger, one of our most physical players and a top three among our third and fourth liners, we have a 12 percent chance of getting a player, and again maybe half that chance of getting one of Kilger's quality.

Today, so far, has been a terrible day for this hockey team moving forward.

by penaltyshotsca on Feb 26, 2008 4:01 PM EST reply actions

sorry, Gill's pick

was a second, not a third.  I say we now have a 15 percent chance of getting a player of Gill's quality.

by penaltyshotsca on Feb 26, 2008 4:03 PM EST reply actions

Picks

I want to believe the reason for obtaining so many picks is to try to package multiple picks to move up in the draft.  Say, the Leafs second and third picks for someone's first.

by Evening News Team on Feb 26, 2008 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

Options

At the very least it gives them options. They can package them with other players this summer as well.
