Caps 4 at Flyers 2: Multiple Ovechgasms
Wow. Just wow. There are some satisfied fans in Washington and some very angry fans in Philadelphia. Check out the last picture. No way that guy is from Philly because that is far too creative.
While the Bruins choked on their chance to destroy the hopes and dreams of their fiercest rivals the Capitals did not back down even after falling behind 2-0. The Flyers, it seemed to me, were starting to feel the effects of six physical games. The Capitals were winning more races and definitely had more jump. Youth will do that. Then Ovechkin blocked a shot with his stick (and unlike that moron Bruin didn't tip it into his own net) and Kozlov sent him in alone on Biron. It was a turning point. Either he was going to be stopped and the Flyers were going to eliminate the Caps or Ovie was going to score and Ovechgasm all over the Flyers. Thankfully it was the latter. After going four games without a goal Alex exploded (hee hee) for two in the third to send the series back to Washington for a seventh game. Look out Philly.
So the Capitals enjoy the benefits of home ice advantage. Playing in the Southeast has paid off for the Caps since they actually finished with fewer points than the Flyers. Expect that to be a bone of contention with Flyers' fans once they are eliminated. It should be but it's Flyers fans so who really cares?
Around the NHL
- William Houston thinks that Ron MacLean needs to clean up his language. Fuck that. If the worst he says on camera is 'helluva' then the man is a saint. He works with Don Cherry! We're lucky he's not sauced on camera.
- Barry Melrose Rocks does some great investigative work. Now if he could only find out what happened to Topanga.
- JP has an early game thread up.
- Dr. Mirtle has video and pictures of Montreal's embarrassing display after their win over the Bruins. The Pensblog says it best "But after being forced into a Game 7 by a number eight seed? Act like you have actually been there. It may go down as the one of the stupidest riots in the history of the world. WOW." I assume that lazy journalists will start to trot out the "and Montreal riots" after every early season win just like they do about planning the parade in Toronto. I guess they had to riot now since they're going out in about four games in the next round.

Amazing
As for the Habs fans, I guess it's a sign of how long ago the glory years were that the people arrested were teenagers. I bet the old farts were yelling "Act like we've been here before" and other kids were yelling back "Sure, after Richard got suspended and after '93"
Bunch of animals.

meh
I got tear gassed in Boston in 2004 when the Sox won.
It's just a cop car, who cares? If an angry mob is hurting people, that's one thing, but destroying property? Meh.

also
Especially downtown all that shit is covered by insurance.

but...
i just don't understand that type of "celebration"...what's wrong with just getting loaded and hitting on some broads, instead of destroying property?
maybe it's just me.

Nope
Me too. I get shutting down the street to celebrate and something like a Sox World Series is a great example.
But...once that crosses the line into theft and vandalism and assaulting police officers then it's gone too far.
by PPP on Apr 22, 2008 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
well
In 04 they didn't shut down the streets. People just ran out of their apartments and were clogging up a five block radius around Fenway Park when the riot police showed up.
Having been there on the ground, what usually happens is that a tiny minority does something stupid (ie. flipping cars) and the police respond with batons and tear gas on the whole crowd, which leaves a lot of people pretty angry about getting tear gassed so they retaliate.

Clogging
Sorry, I meant that the fans shut down the streets by clogging them up with their celebrations.
Some Habs' fans are saying that it was the Wu Tang Clan concertgoers that started the rioting. Nice bit of deflecting blame I think.
by PPP on Apr 22, 2008 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Immigants, I knew it was them!
Wow, blaming the wu-tang concert sounds suspiciously like blaming the "immigrant vote" (read: the darkies) when their dumbass separation plot failed.
Douche, douche and more douche.

yeah
I hear ya. I'd like to think that rioting would be reserved for teams winning championships who haven't done it in generations, like if the Cubs ever win the World Series.
Rioting after winning round one in game seven as the #1 seed seems a little silly.

never got it
yeah let's set fire to a cop car....I never understood that

Chemmy...
...one problem, among others, is that there are cops who are sworn to prevent that kind of damage to property. The jarheads who start destroying stuff force the cops into a situation where they have to put their own safety at risk to perform their duty.
Not cool.
If you want to break stuff to celebrate, trash your own damn shite.
My $.02.

Chicken or the Egg?
Hab fans are trying to justify it on Mirtle's site by saying that the cops overreacted. Based on the precedent of Montrealers being riot-happy I am guessing that they reacted just fine.
They love being so Euro but I wonder if they would like it if the cops took European precautions before big games or if they cracked as many skulls as they do on the continent.

excellent point...
in ANY riot situation the cops are said to have overreacted.

Riot Police
Having actually participated in Police Riot training I can assure everyone that the police are not trained, nor allowed to advance on, gas or make any attempt to control a crowed until it becomes clear that there is a threat to the safety and well being of the general public or any peace officer.
Any fans in Montreal trying to justify setting a police car on fire by the fact that 'the cops started it' is so full of shit their eyes are brown. I guess the thought of "hey, look, police in Riot gear are hear, this could get ugly, I'd better go home" never crossed their minds.
It's just morons looking for an excuse to break stuff and hurt people.
I am so sick of this "Blame the man" mentality.

TFC and Respect
a. It's ironic that a few guys pissing on a fence in Columbus raised the "Hooligans" sign over at the National Post while a full scale riot drew "Oh look, it's those Habs fans again" as the response.
b. Cops show as much respect to fans as they receive. I talked to a cop at a house party and he said the same as jared about not acting until they sense trouble. Sadly, people think "Riot police are here? Let's pre-emptively attack!"

I've posted about this mentality...
...in the context of the incident in Boston that you alerted me to, PPP.
IMHO, the people who got this thing started are the same kind of (probably drunken) arseholes who assaulted Mr. Masse. These guys have friends and family that know they're idiots but do nothing to prevent this type of stuff from happening. To the extent that we stand idly by and let people we know engage in this type of behaviour, we bear some responsibility for it. Change starts at home.

well said...
it reflects on everyone. and everyone must bear responsibility in getting things to change.

Not My Fault
That, unfortunately, is the abiding mindset. Much like people will actually suggest on TFC forums that the people that throw flares on the field and ruin it (FieldTurf unfortunately) should not be given up to security without for one second considering how it affects those that don't condone such idiocy.

predictions for tonight?
i need philly to win for hockey pool reasons, but my heart is cheering for the caps.
and i think san jose stuns the sharks, again.
anyone else think that owen nolan was done when he left toronto? dude's still going strong.
and what about avery/brodeur - what do you guys think about the snubbage?

Random Thoughts
Brodeur should not have shaken Avery's hand because you shouldn't fake what you don't feel.
Avery's comments afterwards showed what a true piece of shit he is and why no one outside of NYC (and barely within it) can stand him.
Sharks will overcome.
What a surprise that Owen Nolan is doing well now that he is free of Toronto's medical staff. No knee problems in a while...

William Houston article
Ron MacLean...works with Don Cherry! We're lucky he's not sauced on camera.
Maybe he's stoned. Or Cherry is, which would explain the suits...
and I wonder if Houston thought up "MacLean should swear off the bad language" all by himself or did his mommy have to help him?
