Around SBN: Tiger Woods Makes His 2012 PGA Tour Debut

From The Branches - It's A Boy!

23 of them actually. The first (and hopefully last) adoption of one poor underserved hockey team is complete and the poll was a landslide. The Washington Capitals are our team. For now at least because once the hockey gods find out that Leaf fans are cheering for a team their season will end in a cruel and scarring way. Maybe we should cheer for the Habs? I just hacked off the fingers that wrote that sentence.

Anyway, we'll keep up with the Leafs but we'll run game previews and recaps for the Capitals as they take on the Flyers. Pretty easy to figure out who is the force of light and who comes from the depths of hell (hint: they play for Ed "Satan" Snider). I am actually really excited to see the Capitals in the playoffs. They a few exciting players such as Alexander Semin and Mike Green and are loaded with their own draft picks so hopefully it's a vision of what is to come for the Leafs.

And it goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway) that Alexander Ovechkin played a huge part in the voting. Speed, hands, hitting, and hilarious interviews aside it's his transparent love for the game and for scoring that makes him so easy to like. Seeing him go insane after scoring reminds me at least of how great it felt to score a goal at any level. Toss in the fact that he runs people over and, this might be slight blasphemy, but he sort of resembles a skilled Wendel Clark minus the devastating pummellings and the lineage from God. Toss in the fact that he negotiated his own contract (I hate agents) and that he put up SIXTY POINTS in 39 games (crazy to think that Gretzky scored 50 goals over that same timespan) after signing the massive contract. It is almost impossible to cheer against Ovechkin.

But, that's not to mean that there isn't still a lot to write abotut eh Leafs. In the coming days I'll do some recapping of the season (quick preview: it was shit). But until then, here are some interesting articles to read this morning.

  • Chemmy takes a look at past first round picks of the Leafs. Not too shabby, minus Cereda, but his final note makes me worry.

  • PSC unearths a gem of a comment from The Ottawa Sun. Curious turnaround from last week.

  • David Johnson makes his predictions. Save me some time and pretend that they are mine. Except for the Habs' series. I predict that the Bruins get revenge for their 7 game loss in 2004 when they were leading 3-1. Guess who was the Habs' coach that year? Yeah, Greener's favourite, Claude Julien. Please let it happen.

  • Ryan wants help getting a Leaf into the Hall of Fame. Sign the petition!

  • Godd Till wonders why Feschuk wrote yesterday's article. I am guessing # 9.

  • NHL.com has an official preview of the Capitals' first round series.

  • JP provides a historical look at the Capitals-Flyers series. That site will be your top spot for keeping up with the new team.

Ovie

Since I've adopted Ovie, and to a lesser degree Huet as my post season cheer getters I guess I'm bound to the Caps like the rest of you.
Imagine how much fun it would be to rub Huet in Habs fans faces if they won??

Huet

His former Habdom is a big reason why it would be great to see the Caps do well and maybe even meet the Canadiens at some point.

The Caps are definitely the least evil of the options.

I hope Gill does big things against the sens.

Ovie

I'll be wearing my Ovie game worn Caps jersey on playoff days. I dropped a comment on Japers introducing myself as a Leaf fan jumping on the Caps bandwagon, you guys should too. We could all hang out over there and make some friends.

Done and Done

I sent an e-mail to JP and Ken, the guys that write Japers Rink, letting them know that they had been adopted.

They were glad to hear the news.

I've done the same...

...(sent an email) for On Frozen Blog, an excellent Caps - oriented site, letting them know we're on board.

Nice!

I should have thought about that site!

Yay!!

Should we be passing out cigars?  Maybe, in honour of the home city of our adopted team, from the W. Jefferson Clinton collection of Cojibas?

Do we have to start spelling words like "honour" without a "u"?  Is Mike Green a "defenceman" or a "defenseman"?  And must we now be specific that we are "ice" (rather than floor, grass, field, tundra or cement, presumably) hockey fans?

Jes' lookin' fer some guidance.

Rules...

Hmmm...I think we can just be the Canadian arm of the Capitals fanbase. Sort of like a commonwealth country. We keep our customs but our head of state is Ovechkin now.

Excellent.

All hail the Goalvernor-General!

Caps

Saw your posts on Japer's Rink and came over to check things out here.  Nice site.

There's always room on the Caps bandwagon (except for Pens, Flyers and Rangers fans - when they show up, we suddenly have no seats left).  Welcome to the Red Army - hope it's a lengthy enlistment.

Thanks

Yeah, hopefully none of that riff raff try to enlist.

will the real Damien please stand up

on Apr. 7 PPP said "I saw a commentator laughing at the Leafs for potentially picking 8th (prior to Saturday's game) in a 7 player draft. If the Leafs were picking 3rd he'd say it was a 2 player draft."
on Apr. 8 Damien's blog spins "Draft Intrigue". Damien points out that the first 4 spots are "locked up". He then lists the next 2 picks matter-of-factly. "That's six" he continues, "And the Leafs, of course, draft No.7. Seventh, perhaps, in six player draft."
This kept me awake last night. Is Damien the commentator that you saw? Did Damien also see the same commentator? Does Damien read PPP? Is Damien PPP? Did Damien and Dave Feschuk switch places for a day? I'm settling on the last one: Damien wrote the character assasination: "Some Tips to Help Maurice on His Job Hunt", and Feschuk is the commentator who then put the "Spin" on his own idea.

Mystery

It was actually one of the guys over at Four Habs Fans but that definitely doesn't eliminate the possibility that The Omen posts on a Habs blog (or even HabsBlog).

Of course, considering how often the Leafosphere's links to his site he could have also read it and thought that he'd tweak our noses a bit.

However, I can put to rest the rumour that I am Damien Cox...I am not ;)

I like the idea of Cox using his seniority to write articles under other Star Writer's bylines. If Richard Griffin tosses out a "JP is better than Cliff" article then we'll know the truth.

p.s. great screenname. Welcome aboard.
