Simply put, it's all about the Leafs, and despite their persistent refusal to discuss any aspects of this matter, a source tells SI.com the Leafs are one thousand percent against having another team in what they perceive as their marketplace. They are so against it that the source says they have informally notified the NHL they intend to sue should Balsillie prevail in his attempt to bring a team to Southern Ontario. They are also prepared to sue all 28 other franchises should they travel into Toronto's marketplace to play Balsillie's team.

— Jim Kelley assures us that MLSE is holding the heavy artillery in reserve. Like Dolan and the Rangers they are set to take on the world.

Sports Illustrated names MLSE the NHL's worst owner

SI.com has released its study of the best and worst in professional sports ownership, and bottoming out on the NHL side of things are the Maple Leafs and MLSE. Their other "worst" owners include Alan Cohen of the Panthers, Charles Wang on Long Island, Atlanta Spirit and the Thrashers, and the Predators ownership group in Nashville. Their criteria included: * Team's success or failure on the field. * Willingness to spend money to improve the team. * Stability and capabilities of the front office and management. * Amenities at the team's venue. * Club's culture and interactivity with fans. They listed the best NHL ownership groups as Detroit, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, San Jose and Carolina.

(Excerpts from the Globe and Mail, click linky to go to full story) CTVglobemedia Inc. has struck a deal to sell half its stake in the company that owns the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs and the NBA's Toronto Raptors to fellow owner Lawrence Tanenbaum. Mr. Tanenbaum said in a news release Friday that the media company has agreed to sell him 7.7 per cent of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd., a transaction that will make him the second-largest shareholder in MLSE after the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan. CTVgm is currently the second-largest shareholder in the company. The parties did not disclose the price, but it is thought to be between $90-million and $100-million. ... The private company does not disclose its financial results, but sources told The Globe and Mail last month that it generated about $80-million in profit in its latest fiscal year and was valued at as much as $1.6-billion a year or more ago.
