We didn't realize what happened, how we got too young too early too fast. We got rid of veterans every year, and we're bringing in kids. We kept getting draft picks. We kept acquiring projects... Eventually when you have enough projects, you live in the 'hood.

"He knows where he’s at in his career," Herm Edwards said of Surtain. "He knows eventually he’s going to turn the torch over to these guys. That’s what the good pros do. They know when their time is coming. They start working to help getting the young guys ready to play."

That’s the curse of an older player who survives a massive veteran purge. He becomes a resource for the younger players.
