Brewer will be joining South Carolina's Bill Peters, named head coach of the team, and assistant coaches Dave Cameron, Mike Yeo, and Misha Donskov on the staff.

The IIHF press release highlights Brewer's solid qualifications for the job:

Andrew Brewer was named an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs in June 2015, where he rejoined familiar faces from his previous season with the Detroit Red Wings. Prior to joining the Red Wings in 2014, Brewer spent three years as video manager for Hockey Canada’s national teams, where he was part of the bronze-medal team at the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship, and Canada’s National Men’s Team’s gold-medal performance at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

Canada's first match is on Friday, May 6, against the US.
