# 2024 Draft: Leafs select Sam McCue with pick 216

With the 216th overall in the seventh round of the 2024 draft, the Maple Leafs selected Sam McCue from Owen Sound in the OHL. He is the younger brother of Easton Cowan's teammate in London, Max McCue.

Younger McCue is a late 2005 birthday, with a above average size at 6'1" and 187 lbs. He's a left shot winger that split his season between Peterborough (11 goals and 16 points in 34 games) and Owen Sound after he was traded (12 goals and 21 points in 34 games).

Here's a scouting report from the Elite Prospects draft guide:

> A midseason trade to the Owen Sound Attack gave Sam McCue a well-earned boost in both minutes and production. McCue doesn’t stop. He skates hard after every puck, collides with every opponent, and battles for every inch of ice. After passing, he skates his routes, sets picks, and pushes back to the defence to create space for his teammates. 

> Though skill flashes are infrequent, McCue has off-the-pass shooting skill and vision to slip pucks inside from the boards. He shows more advanced rush patterns if given space, too. 

> To unlock more of the skill game, McCue’s mechanics will have to improve. He’s an upright, stiff skater without much speed or evasiveness, and his hands consistently fail him. Improved skating will also elevate his checking game to new heights. There’s a lot of work ahead for McCue. There’s a chance that mechanics never get close to NHL calibre, but his motor gives him a chance

His point production and tracking data don't look great, but we are talking about a seventh round prospect.
