I'd venture to say the roster was set up for that plan in advance and before the Four Nations thing is a better timeline. I have not read the "no, they need a defenceman" article, but my response is: Leafs fans, you have to get over this. Yes that guy made a mistake, he's not trash. Yes the defencemen haven't scored, that's fine. Yes the power play is sometimes awful, no you don't need Tyson, er a new defenceman. Yes the offensive creation (is that points? no it isn't) of Morgan Rielly is off. Is that him? Or is it he just part of the system that fails a lot. You're not getting six perfect defenders who all score 20 goals and can pick up and throw forwards out of the crease. Meanwhile, the holes in the top nine are obvious. The defensive flailing of the forwards is right there to be seen. Overcomplicating this is just a way to avoid the reality that the player acquired is not going to be all that exciting. This is all very, very preliminary. That's if for today. Feel free to argue about how no really the Leafs need to get a defenceman and just let Max Domi be the 3C. (Do you think he's looked a lot more useful offensively playing wing with Minten, because I have that impression. I can't exactly say "looked" however.) Happy Friday, and remember if the Leafs aren't playing, they can't make you mad.
