This past weekend the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament began, and the unofficial tryouts for the U20 World Junior Championship teams are under way.

[Canada fell to Russia](http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/canada-falls-russia-shootout-open-ivan-hlinka-memorial-cup/?ref=pensionplanpuppets.com) 4-3 in a shootout yesterday, after Niagara IceDogs star and 2018 draft pick Akil Thomas tied the game in the third.

In other opening games, Sweden mopped the floor with the Americans 6-1, Czechs beat the Swiss 6-2, and Finland continued the theme by beating Slovakia 6-1.

Canada faces Finland later today.
