Welcome to the SEGABABA wrap-up post:

### First Period

The game didn't start as fast as you might expect, but it got going eventually. Nick Robertson, who was a little invisible in Montréal, was on fire for the opening goal:

Bobby McMann stole Robertson's "back in the lineup, score a goal" trick:

The fast move up the ice is really in evidence so far. As is a desire to own the crease. The difference in the style is pretty obvious here.

There was almost a whole period without a penalty, but John Tavares heads to the box with two minutes left. Dennis Hildeby has one great save, and Pontus Holmberg (who has been great) has one bad clear.

Score is 3-1 Leafs after one.

Corsi is dead even, and the Leafs are shooting a lot of long bomb junk. That said, they're doing such a good job of keeping the puck in the zone that it *looks* like they're making that work for rebounds and tips.

### Second Period

The first half is pretty Devilish for the Leafs, but they get a power play, and okay – it's a work in progress still.

The Devils get some more time themselves on the man advantage on a cheesy call against Conor Timmins. Hildeby is good when he needs to be.

John Tavares then just wanders in a rips it.

Good play by Domi here, showing his key ability that adds value.

Timo Meier gets one back in the final seconds after Hildeby had a rough patch helped by the defence having an ineffective patch.

Score is 4-2 Leafs after two.

You can see NJ running away with the game at the end there.

### Third Period

Simon Benoit takes a penalty on a pretty mild-looking scrum after he takes exception to a hit on Knies.

This bit's complicated. Mitch Marner exposes a pick like the one that sent Timmins to the box, but the offside call was made, so no penalty. New Jersey takes a penalty almost immediately after. A new kind of makeup call, I guess.

The Leafs put the worst power play seen on earth on the ice. The first unit managed to be worse than the second, which is hard.

William Nylander has an episode and takes a dumb penalty and is likely getting an unsportsmanlike fine tomorrow.

The offence got a little better as the game wore on, but it was a close and scrappy second half.

Final score: 4-2 Leafs.

In general, Benoit was notable for all the wrong reasons in this game, and a lot of it was not his fault, but when the team has eight defenders on the roster, you don't want that kind of attention.

The Holmberg line was much improved, and played a lot of tough competition. The fourth line was a lot better with McMann, but you knew that. Mitch Marner was very on his game.

The Leafs got hemmed in an alarming amount in the second half, however.

And Denis Hildeby won his first NHL game! Beast!
