# Leafs sign former Rangers defensemen Matt Hunwick to two-year contract

According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, the Leafs have signed [Matt Hunwick](http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/players/54887/matt-hunwick?ref=pensionplanpuppets.com) to a two year deal valued at $2.4 million.

Hunwick, who registered 11 points in 55 games with the [Rangers](http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/teams/new-york-rangers?ref=pensionplanpuppets.com) last season, will cary a $1.2 million cap hit.

The 30-year-old defensemen was taken in the seventh round of the 2004 [NHL Draft](http://www.sbnation.com/nhl-draft?ref=pensionplanpuppets.com).

In 347 career games, Hunwick has registered 18 goals and 60 assists for 78 points.

From a puck possession standpoint, Hunwick's performance in 2014-2015 was strong.

Hunwick has spent his career with the [Boston Bruins](http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/teams/boston-bruins?ref=pensionplanpuppets.com), [Colorado Avalanche](http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/teams/colorado-avalanche?ref=pensionplanpuppets.com) and New York Rangers.

In an interview with the Leafs, Hunwick said the chance to work with Mike Babcock is what helped sway him.

"Coach Babcock obviously draws a lot of interest from a lot of players."
