# Leafs Sign Paul Ranger (To NHL Deal)

[Paul Ranger](http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/players/55077/paul-ranger?ref=pensionplanpuppets.com) decided that he had enough of the NHL and after his age 25 season he disappeared entirely. Before this he was regarded as a fairly competent NHL d-man:

His usage chart is a little weird; the only time he's in the tough quadrant he had a -7 Corsi Rel, but he's succeeded in other roles:

~~We don't know contract details yet but I assume it won't be a huge number~~, but the real bizarre thing here is the Leafs' current defensive roster: [Dion Phaneuf](http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/players/54651/dion-phaneuf?ref=pensionplanpuppets.com), [Carl Gunnarsson](http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/players/72010/carl-gunnarsson?ref=pensionplanpuppets.com), [John-Michael Liles](http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/players/55475/john-michael-liles?ref=pensionplanpuppets.com), and [Jake Gardiner](http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/players/130014/jake-gardiner?ref=pensionplanpuppets.com) are all signed, [Mark Fraser](http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/players/54982/mark-fraser?ref=pensionplanpuppets.com) in arbitration and with [Cody Franson](http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/players/54426/cody-franson?ref=pensionplanpuppets.com) an unsigned RFA makes seven.

It's hard to understand how the Leafs plan to make the cap work here. Somebody's probably on the move to open up cap space now, I just hope it's Liles and not Franson or Gardiner. Hold on tight.
