# Waiver watch: Kasimir Kaskisuo is the first on the wire

The Maple Leafs trimmed their roster by two goalies today. One required waivers, and the other did not.

Kaskisuo was never drafted into the NHL. He has been with the Leafs and Marlies organisations since turning pro and signing a contract after the end of the 2015-16 season playing for the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. He participated in last season’s playoff run by the Marlies, taking most of the starts while being backed up by Michael Hutchinson. He will turn 26 years old on October 2nd.

The Leafs also sent Brandon Halverson to the Marlies, who is exempt from the waivers process. This leaves the Leafs with four goalies on their roster: Frederik Andersen, Michael Hutchinson, Joseph Woll, and Michal Neuvirth. Neuvirth is still only on a try-out contract at the moment. Woll will not need to clear waivers to be assigned to the Marlies.

The 30 other NHL teams now have some time to think about claiming Kaskisuo off waivers and adding him to their roster. We all recall last year where a host of goalies were picked off waivers from the Leafs by other teams, notably backup Curtis McElhinney.

It should be further noted that Kaskisuo is still technically available to play for the Leafs for now. A separate transaction is required to send him to the AHL after the waivers process concludes.

There will be more names on the waiver wire to come in the next few days. We will update this post with further comments from the Maple Leafs if they make any.
