Taking the sting off of this signing is the fact that both Edmonton and Montreal totally got hosed on deals for their respective best players (although you could certainly make a case for McDavid being the [Oilers](http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/teams/edmonton-oilers?ref=pensionplanpuppets.com)' best player, and then [Carey Price](http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/players/54843/carey-price?ref=pensionplanpuppets.com) for Montreal).

What Stamkos staying put means for the Leafs remains unclear as they head into next season, but at least they didn't screw up big.
