I imagine most of you are reading the headline and going “what the hell are Yeezys?” I don’t blame you. Yeezy is the fashion project of Kanye West. They do (ridiculously overpriced) shirts and (equally overpriced) pants. But at this point, what they’re most known for is Kanye’s line of Yeezy shoes, which are in conjunction with adidas.

This is one particular colourway of one version of the shoe. There are (essentially) three versions of Yeezy shoes. They are:

  • Yeezy Boost 750/

These were released (in various colourways) sporadically in 2015 and 2016, and retailed for $350 USD

  • Yeezy Boost 350 V1/

Like the 750s, these were released in 2015 and 2016, though they retailed for a significantly lower price of $200 USD.

  • Yeezy Boost 350 V2/

These are the newest Yeezy’s to be released, and have been dropping in various colourways since late 2016 and into 2017. adidas increased the price, to $220 USD.

So at this point, you may be wondering why I’m taking the time to talk about (somewhat ugly) shoes. Well, due to Kanye’s reputation as a pop-culture icon, and the very limited supply of the shoes, these have become a very sought after shoe model, going beyond the sneakerhead community and becoming highly desired across the broader shoe-buying population. You can’t just walk into an adidas outlet and get these. They get released (in small quantities) at specific times, and they’re generally pretty hard to obtain at retail prices. And once they’re released the first time, that’s generally it. These don’t get continuously restocked.

In accordance with this, there is a cottage industry of people who simply buy these at retail prices and resell them (unused) for jacked up prices. So how much do they go for? Anywhere between $400 and $2500.

So how does this relate to the Leafs? Well, as many of the Leafs are young and rich millennials, you can imagine how they choose to spend their hard-earned money.

As far as I can tell, at least five Leafs have Yeezys.

If you look closely, you can see that Frederik Andersen has the Cream/White colourway of the 350 V2s, while William Nylander is wearing the Pirate Black colourway of the 350 V1s.

There’s a clearer view of Nylander’s shoes here:

Auston Matthews isn’t left out of this little club either. Here he is in the Black/Red colourway of the 350 V2s, while also paying tribute to Harambe.

Auston truly is a spicy memelord.

Mitch Marner completes the Big 3 with Yeezys set. Like Andersen, he decided to go with the relatively less ostentatious Cream/White V2s.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree with Mitch, as his team dad, Matt Martin, evidently has the exact same pair.

We’ll continue to keep you posted on the shoe game of various Leafs as time passes.
