As per The Athletic’s James Mirtle, the Toronto Maple Leafs have signed two defencemen: Alex Biega and Carl Dahlstrom.

Biega, 33, is a veteran defender who’s been on the fringes of the NHL for a while. He got into thirteen games for the Detroit Red Wings last season, so there’s not much reason to expect an everyday player, but he’s a reliable defensive presence who can either take up time in the pressbox or be a steadying presence on the Marlies.

Dahlstrom, 26, was in the AHL last season for the Henderson Silver Knights. He’s appeared in the NHL for 64 games across three years with Chicago and Winnipeg. He’s big and solid, without much offensively.

Both players seem like NHL/AHL tweeners, and them ranking anywhere from seventh on the NHL depth chart to top four in the AHL wouldn’t be a surprise. Timothy Liljegren might be frustrated to have these guys as competition, I’d think.

UPDATE: These deals are official. Both are two-way contracts with an AAV of $750,000 at the NHL level.
