David Kämpf has not been happy being sent to the AHL. He played four games for the Marlies but has since been away from the club. It's been long enough now that the Leafs can suspend Kämpf for failure to report. The short-term benefit is $1.25 million in cap space for the Leafs, but this arrangement won't last long term. It's expected that a resolution will come soon.

Kampf is currently seeking options to return to the NHL, whether through trade or terminating his contract.

My guess is a trade to an NHL team that will give him a chance in the lineup. His $2.5 million contract is very affordable for half the league. Second, his contract is terminated and Kämpf either searches for a new NHL contract or one in Europe. The least likely is he returns to the Marlies or Leafs in any capacity. It seems like that ship is sailed.
