Presumably it was Keith Pelley, president and CEO of MLSE, who fired Brad Treliving today. He will now be looking for a new general manager.

This comes one day after the Vegas Golden Knights abruptly fired head coach Bruce Cassidy despite his team hosting the 6th best xGF% (shot quality ratio) in the league but the league's worst goaltending.

Brad Treliving's Leafs are last in the league in shot share this season and fourth last in xGF%. As mentioned in the Leafs press release, Treliving's team posted a 139-92-27 record during his almost three seasons, which is a 97-point pace, however this season the team is 24th in the league.

Here is Pelley's statement:

"Throughout the course of this season, there has been a deep analysis into both the current state of the Maple Leafs organization and the direction needed to achieve the ultimate goal of delivering a Stanley Cup championship to the city," said MLSE President and CEO Keith Pelley.
"Brad Treliving is a man that we all have deep respect and appreciation for, both as a hockey executive and as a person, but it was determined that the club must chart a new course under different leadership. The organization is grateful for all that Brad has contributed in his nearly three years with the Maple Leafs and we with him and his family the very best."

The Leafs will be able to start looking for the people who will take the Leafs in their "new course" earlier than they have been able to in the recent past. Treliving himself made aware when he replaced Kyle Dubas that he had less than a month before the draft and free agency. The consequences from that month was the signing of Max Domi and the activation of Mitch Marner's NMC without a contract extension or a trade.

There is some fear of Peter Chiarelli recently becoming a free agent, but my only wish is to see the return of Cliff Fletcher. C'mon sir, get back in the saddle!

News about a replacement will be posted as it arrives. The Leafs current AGMs are Brandon Pridham, Derek Clancey (player personnel), Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser (player development), Darryl Metcalf (hockey R&D), and Marlies GM Ryan Hardy.

This news came one hour before the Leafs dropped the puck against the Anaheim Ducks in their 8th last game of this dysmal season.

Update 1:

Treliving was not let go with his successor already lined up. It might be the case Pelley has that person in mind and chose not to wait. It's very clear from the news media that this next hire will make the big decision of pushing for a resurgence or rebuilding the team. It also confirms that the Leafs fired Treliving while he had another year on his contract, going back on the idea that these guys at the top are protected because MLSE doesn't want to pay them not to work for them.

Pelley will speak with the media tomorrow at 2pm. The Leafs will only play two games in the next eight days.

The first half of Dreger's posts are always so odd to me. Anyway, Berube hasn't been fired simultaneously.

Since the trade deadline, the Leafs have had a record of 4-5-2, slipping them to only two points ahead of the bottom five in the league. The Leafs also haven't won on a Saturday night since January 31st, a day of the week that shouldn't be more significant than any other, but frankly is.
