Kyle Dubas and the Toronto Maple Leafs today announced that Laurence Gilman is the new Assistant General Manger of the Leafs.

Gilman was the AGM to Mike Gillis with the Vancouver Canucks. Gillis was fired in 2014, but Gilman hung around for another season. He was let go in the summer of 2015 along with the rest of the Gillis-era executives.

Gilman, who is 53, has a long career in the NHL, and has been interestingly busy since he was fired by the Canucks.

In the Leafs press release, Dubas says:

“Laurence provides terrific experience to our management team,” said Dubas. “His 20-plus years in the NHL have seen him manage nearly every type of department in professional hockey and have success doing so.”

”Adding Laurence to our front office and having him work alongside Brandon Pridham as an Assistant General Manager gives our program great depth and breadth of knowledge across all areas of hockey operations. We feel very fortunate to have both Brandon and Laurence as key parts of our executive team.”

Gilman, who Elliotte Friedman reports was about to become the new head of the ECHL, will run the Marlies, player development and assume responsibilites for the prospects in the system.

Beyond Gilman’s extensive NHL career — he was with the Coyotes for a long time before the Canucks (which makes him a former executive of the real Winnipeg Jets) — he has recently been involved in the expansion draft:

In 2016, Gilman served on the NHL’s Expansion Draft Rules & Regulations Committee. In this capacity, he helped formulate and design the rules and regulations for the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft.

A few weeks ago, TSN reported that Gilman turned down the Carolina Hurricane’s job offer of a front office position.
