Kyle Dubas is taking the age old advice that an extension a day keeps the roster filled. After signing Garret Sparks yesterday, today it’s Andreas Borgman.

Toronto Maple Leafs Sign Garret Sparks To Extension

Borgman is in his final year of a two-year ELC, and he would have been an RFA with arbitration rights at the expiry of the contract.

The new deal is a two-way contract for one-year at the league minimum NHL salary of $700,000. There is no information at this time on what the minors salary is or if the contract contains a minimum salary clause.

Since Borgman has played all of this season in the AHL, he is still waivers exempt. He will maintain that exemption next summer — barring a sudden call-up to the NHL. He has 22 NHL games remaining before that exemption expires (per Cap Friendly) and playoff games count for that one.

This move gives the Leafs an experienced AHL defender who can be sent to the Marlies out of training camp without any worries about waiver claims.

As for Borgman, the deal gives him a chance to come into training camp healthy and compete for a depth role on the Leafs and make that waiver exemption moot. In that sense, it’s a win-win.

This season, marked by a series of injuries, Borgman has struggled to find his game in the AHL. He has four goals and 11 assists in 39 games, and he’s watched Rasmus Sandin and Timothy Liljegren leap over him and show obvious promise of future success.

Borgman is only 23, however, and he turns 24 this summer. There’s no reason for him or the Leafs to not give this one more year to see how it goes.

We’ll meet back here tomorrow at 11:30 and see who Dubas will sign next!
