In Game 2 of the Qualify Round series with Columbus on Tuesday afternoon, Jake Muzzin was injured after a crosscheck knocked him down, as he collided with another player:

Multiple reports indicate the NHL considers this an accident, and there was no call on Pierre-Lub Dubois’ original crosscheck, so there will be no supplementary discipline either.

According the Leafs PR, Muzzin was taken from the Scotiabank Arena to the hospital after being removed from the ice on a stretcher.

They released the following today:

After being transported to hospital following an on-ice collision last night, Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Jake Muzzin is back at the team’s hotel.

Muzzin was discharged overnight but will not be available to the club for the duration of its series versus the Columbus Blue Jackets as a result of his injury. He will remain in quarantine within the hotel and look to rejoin his teammates upon recovery.

Since he’s not ready to play yet as per this statement, this neatly sidesteps the open ended quarantine rules for players who leave the hub with permission and then return. The rules contain a minimum of four days of isolation with negative tests each day, up to a longer period at the discretion of the medical authorities and depending on where the player has been and for how long.

If the series goes the full five games the final game would be on Sunday, August 9 or four days from today.

The Maple Leafs have Martin Marincin, Rasmus Sandin, Calle Rosen and Timothy Liljegren on the roster to choose from.
