Yesterday, news leaked about Connor McDavid’s upcoming contract extension, expected to be worth $106 million over 8 years for a $13.25 AAV. Nobody’s surprised that his first big-boy contract will make him the highest-paid player in the league—I don’t care a whit about the Oilers’ cap situation, so get money get paid, Mr. McDavid—but it does raise questions about the kind of money Toronto’s very own franchise player will command down the line. Nice suits don’t buy themselves, after all.

Auston Matthews probably won’t command McDavid-level big money, but it’s a good indication of what we could be looking at when it’s time for him to sign his next contract. There are only two years left on Matthews’ ELC. Let’s just all be really, really nice to him for the next year in an attempt to persuade him to take a discount!

(This will not work, but it might help provide us with an illusion of control, which is something).
