It’s been a roller coaster of emotion for Leafs fans this weekend. A Leviathan of reaction if you will.
The Leafs had a strong showing against the Winnipeg Jets in Wednesday night’s match and looked to continue it on Hockey Night in Canada. They fell to an early deficit during the game and even though they walked away with another win, they lost Auston Matthews to a shoulder injury (yes shoulder, NOT collarbone).
Babcock lightened some of the negativity amongst the fanbase after practice, giving a quick sort of update on his status.
Babcock on how Auston Matthews is doing: "Initially when you first get hurt, it’s like panic mode for a little bit. And then you get up the next day and you feel a lot better than you expected and it’s a good thing. Until he’s checked out though, this is just you and me talking"— Kristen Shilton (@kristen_shilton) October 28, 2018
But he’s always one to harp on how he isn’t a doctor so we won’t know until it’s announced as to how long the Leafs will be Matthews-less. For now, the team will have to settle for only having two star centremen instead of three. It’s a tragedy really...
Matthews missed a total of 20 games last season because of a shoulder injury and concussion in separate events. He was still able to finish with an impressive offensive total, but the length of this injury could cut into his bid for being the first Leaf to score 50 goals since Dave Andreychuk in 1994.
Or he could return and light up the league anyway. I wouldn’t put it past him at this point.
