Tuesday’s FTB: The return of Tyler Ennis?

New, comments

Tyler Ennis worked once for the Leafs, maybe he’ll work again.

I promise that I don’t intend to make all of my FTBs revolve around waivers. That said, the question needs to be asked: Will the Leafs claim Tyler Ennis off of the waiver wire this afternoon?

NHL Headlines gave us something to chew on this past Saturday. According to Elliotte Friedman, the Leafs may be looking to see if they can add or upgrade to the forward group.

There is the question of playable roster space. Nick Robertson went down, Joe Thornton followed him, and both are on LTIR. There are bodies available to insert into the lineup already via Travis Boyd, Joey Anderson and Adam Brooks, who can slot in and upgrade rather than simply adding may make more sense in the long-run.

That said, adding a familiar depth forward for free can’t hurt. Ennis put up 12 goals - 10 of which were at 5v5 - and 6 assists for 18 points in 51 games during the 2018-19 season. Although Ennis did have a stretch on Auston Matthews’ left, 34 never assisted on any of his goals. In fact, it was other depth players such as Frederik Gauthier and Josh Leivo at the time who helped Ennis out.

And what makes things look better is he didn’t lose his touch after leaving the Leafs as he scored 14 goals and 33 points with the Ottawa Senators. Not just any Ottawa Senators. The 2019-20 Ottawa Senators.

Injuries have got in the way of Ennis continuing this effort in Edmonton, but they did like him enough to give him an initial run with Connor McDavid on the top line given his speed.

Either scenario is a shrug. The Leafs don’t have to claim Ennis, but it wouldn’t hurt. And he did light up the Calgary Flames for a hat-trick, so there’s that.
